In my experience traveling abroad to Europe they pretty much just took a picture of my face and compared to my passport then let me go, maybe asked me some questions at most. When I've gone to Asia I got interrogated a bit more by the CBP personnel but never any conversation that takes more than 5-10 minutes. They even have an app now to help American Citizens expedite going through customs.
