Bad webcomics

I actually really like that, though I know almost nothing about Pokémon
For reference, here are their original designs:
1742905961217.png1742905979181.png

They're very humanoid and a little bit uncanny. Of course they are; they're literally meant to be mimes, it's in the name.

Making them frogs makes absolutely negative sense. If it was a joke about them being French, effsnares forgot to make their English dialogue reflect any of that. If it was just because effsnares is a retarded brainrotted pooner who's under the impression that every single Pokémon must look like some kind of real animal, this is just a very unfortunate way for it to have happened. It would've made more sense to make them look like damn apes, why'd she go for the amphibians?

Also, good on you for avoiding the plague. Get out while you still can.

I also just remembered that Elon Musk is a cat in this universe. I’m really not a fan of the dude, but again, subtlety goes a long way!

Representing different classes as different species makes even less sense than race. Becoming a millionare/billionaire is very unlikely, but it's not impossible, especially not biologically impossible. Elon Musk is the easy target for this, but you can't really do it with someone like Jeff Bezos.

And saying that it's biologically impossible to become rich has very... eugenics-y implications. Am I looking too hard into this? Yes. Yes I am.

Am I looking too hard into this? Yes. Yes I am.
Don’t worry, so am I. Somehow that’s part of the fun of it though. It also makes me think of how using animals for metaphors for complex real life concepts like capitalism just doesn’t really work a lot of the time. When it works, you get stuff like, say, Animal Farm. When it doesn’t, you get this.

It brings me back to another comic I saw during the St. Floyd riots. Some birds were sitting there not caring about cats mauling mice until a bird got mauled, then they were like “That’s not fair! All lives matter!” And I’m just sitting there knowing for a fact that the artist doesn’t give a shit about anyone who’s not black when it comes to police brutality. Not until it’s convenient, of course.

Additionally birds that hunt other birds are very much a thing, as well as birds that kill other birds for being in "their territory".

Crows for example love eating the chicks of other bird species. Not a great look as your nigger stand in there buddy.

Now where is that video of the eagle carrying off the house cat....

Post the stats about the % of police encounters betweens whites and cops that end in fatalities, and the % of interactions between blacks and the police that end in fatalities.

Also look into the % of copkillers who are black vs. the nationwide black population and an interesting trend can be seen....

"what happens next will shock you" is what happens when you give a deranged true crime fangirl a comic and tell her that she's free to say literally anything within it.

The entire cast is some flavor of gay, troon, or gay troon with zero exceptions save for the villains (of course) + the murder victims the plot is partially about, and it has the worst art style I have seen in some time. (The text looks like this on every single page. Sorry about your retinas.)
1734449450339.png1734449484560.png1734449522318.png1734449542154.png1734449592737.png1734449611527.png

The comic almost entirely consists of shot-reverse shot-shot of people crying and moaning about how the main character, an accomplice to a murder, is completely innocent and doesn't deserve the terrible life she's been given (one with loving parents and a stable friend group, only slightly tarnished by the fact that she helped murder two people and is rightfully getting backlash for it) while smoking out of bongs, posting on tumblr, and crying about the Kiwifarms.

I'm surprised nobody's pointed out that she's blatantly referencing Johnny the Homicidal Maniac in one drawing:
johnny ripoff.png
And her art style looks like some smoothed down, colorful, and tumblrfied version of Johnny's art:

Imagine looking at that and thinking: "I like this, but it needs to be cuter and less offensive. Just because it's about murder doesn't mean you can do something triggering."

Even if Shadows WAS a troon he would not at all give a shit about trying to help/groom Tails to be like him, and why are they the classic versions of the characters when Shadow should still be in stasis at that point? Hell, the troon version looks the exact same, anyway, so what's the point?
They might as well just be drawing Sonic characters over their OCs to push a point if they're not even gonna act like them.

This webcomic seems to be right up this thread's alley. I haven't read through the whole thing, but I have skimmed enough to give an overview of the interesting details.
Introducing: The Gloslings.

This series can best be described as "what if you were forced to work on your shitty chiodhood story for your entire life." You will notice the massive art difference in the creator working for seven years, likely from a young age until now.

The art difference is almost as jarring as the tonal shifts, and the glaring plot problems. This creator is working with a childhood story and it shows. The worldbuilding starts with explaining that everyone in this world is a creator or a destroyer, there was a big war in the past, and that our young character thinks that creators are icky and that destroyers are the coolest ever. Naturally, in YA fiction fashion, he becomes a creator.

The entire comic, he will bitch about this happening. This will be grating, because if you have two brain cells and a stick you can put together why this view is fucking stupid. What does he do, the first time he gets home with his creator pen? He proceeds to make a destroyer pen. Oh, he can't use it, so the next logical step is to turn it into a living clone of himself, and then as a treat he edits the clone's memories and everyone around him to think that the clone has been his brother this entire time.

Yeah, if you have a creator pen, you are literally fucking god, or the dude from scribblenauts. And in turn, destroyers... destroy things. Like, they shoot big energy beams. That's it. Why doesn't our main character make a gun? Or a nuke? Or anything else he can use with the literal world at his fingertips.

The rest of the story is not much better. These plot holes, along with whatever YA tropes the creator was interested in at the time only stretch the flimsy fabric of this story further. At one point, you can tell when steven universe got popular. because they literally rip off fusion verbatim with no rhyme or reason involved.

The story is pretty ballistic. It's no SnP, but it sitsin it's own world of petty angst and consequences from poorly thought out plot moments forced to be taken seriously like a corpse being piloted by a necromancer against it's natural desire to stay dead. Someone should go through and pick out any other moments that I missed, because I really only scratched the surface.

Hm. I haven't read webcomics in a while, how bad are they nowadays?

Why is there a random slime girl in Questionable Content? Because Jeph looked at 4chan a few months back and got a new fetish. In universe she's a super smart AI in an experimental body -- and she's basically a baby brained bimbo... nudist, which no one ever questions. One of like 20 new random female characters he's added over the past few years, as he keeps adding to his toybox, like Tom Preston only not.

El Goonish Shive maintains it's glacial slow pacing, now with one main character (Tedd, far right panel 2) now firmly turned into Shive's author avatar, which you can tell because Tedd's now a pretty pretty girl (at random, for some reason) and all that.

Other characters include Jay (random punk rock girl, the grandson of the local head of the Magic FBI), Hope (The Villain of a previous arc reincarnated after it turns out she was just misunderstood), Susan (Tedd's hangups about intimacy personified), Sarah (the token female from the first comics).

Reminder, this is how Tedd looked for years:
1743251985750.png

Shive's been at this for 23 years, mastered his art style, but can't write his way out of a paper bag and is desperately trying to do a clean-fetish-comic. It's worked for him so far, I guess. Still hasn't even begun to do a buffer, so every time he plays video games late or has to re-write the next strip cause he reconsidered the plot or realized something won't work or what have you, he ends up missing days.

You just can't be edgy when the characters are actually adorable. See also: Shadow the Hedgehog

Between Blind Girl, Halo Head and this, I've noticed these artists pay a lot of attention to hands. I'm not an artist myself but I've heard that getting hands consistently good is no mean feat. Maybe people in the thread who can draw can chime in but, as someone who can't draw, it's impressive to me at least.

Whew, been there before, don't do it.
People change and grow and shift their interests when they grow older, so when you're working on a story you've been writing since childhood, or even early to-mid teenagehood, the parts of it that seemed like super cool writing and designs and shit will just seem like cliché stuff made by an amateur and lead to a jarring disconnect between the old and the new that if you try to fix, you might as well just end up writing a whole different thing.

I'd say it depends, Shadow was the coolest motherfucker back when I was a kid and even now he can be pretty sick when he isn't just sitting in the corner crossing his arms like a pouty 14 year old.
Then again, 2000s Sonic was basically Dragon Ball but for autistic 10 year olds, so I'm biased as hell.
Speaking of hands, I draw a bit, and while hands aren't really some art boogeyman for me anymore, they can still be pretty damn hard when you're trying to do some specific gestures, so getting them to be consistently good is pretty impressive.

I remember this comic from like, 22 years ago. Yes shut up I'm old. Why the fuck is it still going? Did the dude and his chubby roommate finally get together as part of the premise from what I remember?
