Powerful earthquake rocks Myanmar and Thailand and kills more than 150 people - Talk about a 9/11 style collapse

BANGKOK (AP) — A powerful earthquake rocked Myanmar and neighboring Thailand on Friday, destroying buildings, a bridge and a dam. At least 144 people were killed in Myanmar, where photos and video from two hard-hit cities showed extensive damage. At least eight died in the Thai capital, where a high-rise under construction collapsed.

The 7.7 magnitude quake, with an epicenter near Mandalay, Myanmar ‘s second largest city, struck at midday and was followed by a strong 6.4 magnitude aftershock.

The full extent of death, injury and destruction was not immediately clear — particularly in Myanmar, one of the world’s poorest countries. It is embroiled in a civil war and information is tightly controlled.

While I know "nothing ever happens" this might be huge for the government's stability. The No 1 question will be "why the fuck did those buildings not meet earthquake safety standards?!" Heads will fucking roll after this mark my works. I can bet you that all those buildings were approved by corrupt officials looking to make some quick cash.

Whole families must have been obliterated.

It's pretty fucked that no matter how fast you run, a crushing wave of water will just spawn out of the sky and sweep you up in less than a second.
I mean it's Thailand. Crushing Waves of Water falling from the sky is what they call "Spring". But the water coming off the buildings is unusual.

Has there been a Tsunami Alert? a 7.7 on 2 coastal nations seems like a likely candidate.

A crane operator had a bad day.

Holy shit. What an absolutely horrifying way to go. He must have been utterly terrified getting thrown out of the crane like that. Had to be the worst possible place you could be during an earthquake

That said, why do I get the feeling the usual idiots are going to reee all over twitter about how trump needs to immediately reverse his policy on foreign aid and give these countries a few billion in foreign aid. Not that the US shouldn't send over some clean bottled water, emergency supplies and medicines and maybe send over some equipment and specialists in search and rescue but not absurd amounts of foreign aid money. Limit it to what people in this situation actually need
