Powerful earthquake rocks Myanmar and Thailand and kills more than 150 people - Talk about a 9/11 style collapse

BANGKOK (AP) — A powerful earthquake rocked Myanmar and neighboring Thailand on Friday, destroying buildings, a bridge and a dam. At least 144 people were killed in Myanmar, where photos and video from two hard-hit cities showed extensive damage. At least eight died in the Thai capital, where a high-rise under construction collapsed.

The 7.7 magnitude quake, with an epicenter near Mandalay, Myanmar ‘s second largest city, struck at midday and was followed by a strong 6.4 magnitude aftershock.

The full extent of death, injury and destruction was not immediately clear — particularly in Myanmar, one of the world’s poorest countries. It is embroiled in a civil war and information is tightly controlled.

I mean it's Thailand. Crushing Waves of Water falling from the sky is what they call "Spring". But the water coming off the buildings is unusual.

Has there been a Tsunami Alert? a 7.7 on 2 coastal nations seems like a likely candidate.
The quake was centered deep inside the continent along a slip fault. It would be like expecting a Tsunami warning in Hawaii because a quake happened in Montana.

I don't think it happened in a way that would shift the seafloor enough. It was pretty far inland. USGS maps show moderate shaking around a few bits of the Bay of Bengal, but it was mostly light around the water. It doesn't look like anything strong to severe got within 100 miles of the ocean.

China's declared a warning, but their magnitude estimates for the earthquake was are way higher than what everyone else says they measured.

I hope there's better footage, because a dilapidated unoccupied Myanmar building (that probably would've fallen anyway), and shaking the water out of an infinity pool are doing nothing for me.

Richter may give this earthquake a 7.7, but I give it a 2.3.
It was actually under construction, but I've likely been beaten repeatedly at this point.

I think all the footage we've seen so far is from Bangkok. Which is some distance from the epicenter. The epicenter is deep in the middle of Myanmar/Burma. And oppressive military junta ruled hellscape with an ongoing civil war. It's going to take some time for any real footage to filter out of there. Assumption is it will be horrifying.

An apartment building collapsed after an earthquake in Mandalay, Myanmar

Rescuers pull out live workers from under a collapsed multi-storey building in Bangkok, Thailand.

There are 80 people under the rubble.

Yeah, looks like that. If this is far, I can't imagine 'close'.

There's a bit from Nay Pyi Taw and Mandalay, especially since the junta is begging for help internationally. It's pretty trashed. USGS says something like 1000 square miles could have been affected by liquifaction and the worst of the quake was in a line between those two cities. Lots of photos show every other building at a 45 degree angle, it's pretty impressive.

Link?

(Not usually a single-word-posting faggot, but I don't know what else to say in this post. Maybe "Link, please?" Whatever.)

According to the USGS, it's likely that fatalities will be in the tens of thousands, and possibly in the hundreds of thousands.
I can't recall the last time I've seen this high of a fatality estimate from the USGS.

EDIT:

Around 3.7 million people (possibly more) felt "violent" (IX) shaking according to the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI). Even "very strong" (VII) shaking is enough to cause major damage.

I have an earthquake app on my phone, you would be surprised at how much the planet burps and farts every day.
These are some of the results it shows.
Anything in red is 4.5 R and up, the fault lines are in purple. Those poor people are getting hammered.

We're already getting footage from Burma (a lot of tourists go there; it's not like it's an inaccessible Communist blackhole like the DPRK). I believe the collapsing buildings footage is from Burma while the splashing infinite pools is from Thailand, but because this stuff is getting shared on social media haphazardly, it may be easy to get the two mixed up.

Warning to Kiwis to take labels with a grain of salt and try to verify the location of the videos when posting them. Burma and Thailand are at completely different levels of development. I'm expecting collapsed buildings and high deaths in Burma and minor damage in Thailand, but the infinite pool thing is disturbing. Knowing Thailand, these infinite pools were probably illegal and were allowed to be built through bribes and other corrupt shenanigans.

Mandalay is one of the cities in Myanmar that is considered relatively safe, but i doubt many tourists and expats are in country in recent years. Still, Mandalay is the 2nd most populous city in Myanmar with around 1.2 million people. Casualties are going to be well into the tens of thousands.
