IIRC, for criminal cases the judge can throw out a guilty verdict, but they can not undo a not guilty verdict.
There is no way a trial judge can issue a JNOV to turn a not guilty verdict into a guilty one. Otherwise, that civil clarification bit would not have been necessary in the source.
