I'll be called a faggot, a pinko, a commie. But I did get a CMP m1 and not too long ago a few years. I do not enjoy it.
The ergos and ,don't match. I'm sorry. I'm a history buff and was THRILLED to get one. I've shot em before and knew the issues. So having one was just to collect and impress boomers.

it's super they are making new ones because CMP can be kinda a PITA for some sales. This will be pricy but you can get one, and when CMP dries up... they will be GONE.

Also like wise man said... more gun > less gun for options. Fuck it while it's a sin I rather there be a 223 SKS and .380 acp BAR than NOT have those options.

While I've heard people going bigger and VERY hot on the aught six... If made well the newer metals are better... could you picture a nice brand new safe well made 338 Lapua Garand? Because BASED? Sure it'll be 7k but .. it's a fucking 338 gur-hand.

It was 80 in my area first day carried my 1903 :)
I completely understand. This is why I have made my own into a WROLSHTFBOGLOOIYKYKROATS machine

According to the reps that CMP M1 should be coming out sometime in 2026 and under $2000. It'll be a combination of new and old components, and although the receivers had machining lines the other new manufacture parts (like the gas block) didn't. Its probably related to all the receivers being prototypes. Supposedly tanker variants will be coming down the line eventually.

I have to strongly disagree. I'm actually to the point where I have a much bigger gun boner for classic rifles like leverguns than modern tactical stuff. My first "big gun" was a Winchester 94 in .30-30 Win, and I've loved lever rifles ever since. I definitely want one of the new Marlin 1895 SBLs, but also have a strong desire for a vintage Winchester Model 71 .348 Win and a Winchester 1895 in either .30-06 or .405 Win. And I really dig the Bighorn Armory lever action rifles in .500 S&W and .460 S&W, I just wish they weren't $3k.
unfortunately you just missed this years run of new Winchester 1895s. Pretty sure they only do one run a year. maybe two.

That's OK. I don't have a lot of money to indulge my firearms passion, so I have to be very selective on what I do buy. As much as I want a Winchester 1895, there are quite a few things on the list ahead of it that I need to save up for. So I won't be getting one for a long time.

I tried my 7.62 Surefire RC2 can on my 6.5 Grendel, I was amazed how much louder it was over my .308 running standard M80 ball ammunition (I was shooting 110gr Prvi Partizan in the Grendel). About as loud as my Ruger Mark IV at the muzzle, which is significantly better still but not nailgun quiet like that same suppressor on my AR10. I'm not sure if it's worth getting another dedicated 6.5mm suppressor now, especially if suppressors do eventually have their NFA status removed and I can avoid paying the good goy tax to the ATF.

A gun store I went to recently was selling a M249s for 15K and its semi-automatic. I'm not seeing any practical reason to buy something like that. You could open carry it around here, but it would be really awkward and hilarious at the same time. Also, most of the ARs look really shitty, and are of poor quality in the 500~ range. A lot of them are .22s too. I don't think 22s make sense on AR-15s if you're buying it as a legitimate self defense weapon. Maybe its fun to shoot I guess.

While I agree, there are people who have dropped binary triggers into them (someone should make a FRT for one) to give them some more oomf. A squad automatic weapon as a single armed civilian is of little utility during peace time imo. Also that gun shop is ripping their customers off, you can find an M249s for $9k and change at multiple dealers online.

I've read arguments that it works well to get reps in on the platform as .22 is ~3-6cpr and 5.56 is ~38-45cpr. As well it could be good for teaching new shooters who are noise averse.
The $500 range of AR15s is interesting, there's some smaller outfits like Andro Corp that seemingly build a decent product for poors, but they all seem to suffer from PSA syndrome: questionable quality control during assembly.

So something like IWI? Does that include S&W and Rugers?
Ruger makes a good AR and the S&W's i've handled are pretty decent too, i don't have experience with IWI AR's unfortunately but they're probably okay. other than some proprietary parts on the Ruger that some might want to swap for "mil-spec" parts, which the M&P Sport 3 comes with already, they're pretty equivalent and don't have any mystery meat items in it that aren't like the sling or something with packaging. either S&W or Ruger is making the parts themselves or using OEM suppliers like Mossberg or DRG or Bushmaster, et c.

if i had a customer looking to drop money on a do it all AR-15 for under $1k all accessories and half a case of ammo, i wouldn't feel bad selling them an M&P Sport after giving it a once-over for the customer's peace of mind.

The thing about binary triggers is they have some weird legal problems. Alabama, for some strange reason, made them illegal very recently. Apparently, they're illegal on the federal level, but federal agents are the only people who can arrest you for it. State agencies can just ignore the law. Its an interesting situation because some states are using federal loopholes, like that, to also prevent the nationalization of state guards men and militias.

I've never heard of them. Also, the gun store doesn't have those brands. They have RADICAL fire-arms (which I think is trash) and Anderson (which is actually 5.56) under 500 dollars.

I have a .22 AR that only gets used for people who want to go shoot but have never handled a gun before. Cheap range day and easier to get people over their fear of recoil while they plink with the same setup as a 5.56 and I've had a lot of success with it (meaning they end up purchasing their own guns or at least aren't terrified of big scary AR-15s anymore.)

If I know someone is just going to shoot one box of ammo a year at most and they ask me about buying their first AR-15, Ruger and S&W more than meet their needs. For the people who have started shooting regularly, you can't go wrong with a BCM upper and building out an Aero M4E1 lower. Solid rifle that can be had for around $1k with the right sales. Getting them to get a decent optic and not buying that stupid Amazon 3 in 1 is a harder challenge for me.

I used to think semi LMGs were unpractical too. The price point for me makes the M249 undesirable, even at the 8k-10k price points I've seen them at. I own 2 semi auto MG42s and a full auto. Full auto is great fun and all but mine is chambered in 7.62x51 which means I am blowing $50 a belt for either 3 seconds of ripping it or 30 seconds roughly for bursts. One semi is 8mm, and one is also 7.62x51. They are fun in the sense you have a MG42 and they are quite accurate. I do not have an immediate shooting area I can exceed 100 yards but I feel like they'd preform well farther than that. I can't think of a better phrase but the semis have a better "return on investment" I.E shooting a full 50 rounder on a semi, taking time with your shots lasts 2 minutes or so, even slamming the trigger as fast as you can lasts up to a minute. I think my last outing with the full auto I no joke blew $500 in ammo and the entire running time was maybe 2-3 minutes during a 8hr range session with family and friends. I rarely shoot the full auto for myself anymore unless I am trying to fix an issue or just want to pretend I'm at Normandy for a belt or two. Also you can get 3 semi 1919A4s, maybe MG42s if you find some of the 5k ones, maybe DP27s if you have someone build them for you, for the price that shop was selling the one M249. Hell you can even get 3 fightlite raptor uppers for that price and those are a-lot more flexible since binarys, FRTs, and super safeties exist.

A buddy of mine has now destroyed two PSA uppers just trying to get the barrel nuts off. Not sure if it's insane gorilla torque, something crazy like Rocksett or both, but they really don't want you taking their stuff apart.
