Linus Gabriel Sebastian & Linus Media Group / Linus Tech Tips - Narcissistic corporate shill YouTuber driving his media empire into the ground. KILL COUNT: 2

  • 🔧 At about Midnight EST I am going to completely fuck up the site trying to fix something.
Those percentages are really meaningless. Am I remembering correctly that he once complained about the R&D costs for his chink-shit products? He probably has to sell a lot to make any decent profit.

We're talking about a man that cries at his viewers how they are literally stealing from him if they use adblock, I highly doubt the R&D costs are anything significant. The screwdriver is existing megapro design with slight differences. The backpack is a.. backpack. There's military grade backpacks made in the EU that are cheaper.

Watched a few videos recently. One of them was the iPhone to android 30 day challenge or whatever. Seemed kind of retarded and obviously biased (a la le “iPhone users dumb”) to me. I really dislike the new presenter guy they’ve got. He seems smarmy and disingenuous. The comments are just full of android fanboys and people inexplicably fellating the presenter.

I also watched their video on the 5070. It seemed a little dishonest to not include 4070 data in their comparisons even if the 5070 is meh.

A was watching a third video when I realised LTT is retarded, and started watching a video about trains instead. Great decision.

It’s more capital intensive but it’s an entirely parallel revenue stream (except for probably fucking up their ifixit sponsorships). No doubt R&D was initially inflated because they had no clue what they were doing but I doubt it was that expensive for much besides the screwdriver and maybe the cuckbag. They’ve probably got it down pat for most standard product lines (such as clothing). It seems to me that any level of capital intensity would be grating to somebody whose frame of reference is YouTube revenue, which takes almost no capital investment at all.

if LTT is making so much off his stupid brand, why hasn't every channel with 10+ million subs done it. or fuck it even less subs.
LTT fans are the some of the most docile niggercattle on the planet. Whenever their lord and savior Linus tells them to consoom, they oblige without question. Most YouTube channels this side of Mr. Beast don't have anywhere nearly as many braindead followers as LTT does.

like how do selling shirts and making $5 profit make sense over time? you can only buy so much branded shit too, meanwhile a viewer can be a viewer forever.
Because add views don't actually pay a lot these days. Certain periods they might, but for most it is pretty weak. Like fraction of cent or less per viewed add. And LTT audience probably has higher number of ad-block users than in general. As they have that slightest amount of computer literacy.

Yup, it'd take years of normal viewing for a viewer to add up to just a few dollars revenue. If you do genuinely like a creator, and buy a few pieces of merch, the $10 or so profit they'd pocket at the end is still worth more than they'd make in a decade of normal viewership. So you can adblock and ignore shit like patreon that way, if you want.

I know there are a lot of dumb people and young kids on the internet at the best of times, but you cannot convince me anyone in that reddit thread has an IQ over 80, including the random LTT community mangers smugposting.

If people don't understand why Linus is willing to make videos like that, it's because it comes across as being "transparent" without actually revealing ANYTHING about his business. And I'll cut Linus slack here, I think giving your audience a bunch of play-numbers saves you the headache of being backseat CEO'd in every comment section, which you cannot help but compulsively read.

At the most basic level, the mapping of revenue is almost completely meaningless when the net-profit margins are so dissimilar between slices.
This is compounded when you remember that Linus+wife have somewhere around 2-dozen "revenue generating" business lines across 5-6 different legally distinct companies/entities, which they play games with on their balance sheet by having them pay each other and absorbing losses and writing off to tax advantage their situation (which is not a negative thing, fuck taxes). But it means that even these ratios are way off because they can choose what expenses/overhead/marginal costs to pass along to LMG's balance sheet from these shell companies to shape their revenue however they want. LMG itself is held under their umbrella corp and can be reorganized whenever and however needed.

The broad takeaway every year that Linus publishes one of these is always: making money on social media is a rapidly changing and uncertain endeavor, and diversification of income streams is the only way to find some stability long term. The existential crisis for LTT is that for as "diversified" and large as they are, they are still singularly reliant on Linus himself.

The raw money numbers are moot, whats interesting are the shifting percentages. Hes lost so much sponsor value in a mere 4 years. His views may be high but sponsors don't see them as valuable as they used to. I'm sure the sell-through rate on the sponsors is low since everyone has to spend all their money on overpriced LTT merch. Not to mention a lot of the coupon codes they link are for like 1% off or some shit, or the product is like 15 grand - nobody is going to buy the expensive ass product a sponsor sent you.

Sure Linus, you're gonna turn a fire engine into a mobile LAN Party Center... no you're fucking not, because that'd require gutting a majority of what makes a fire engine a fire engine. Sure it's a big vehicle, but there's a massive water tank in it, on top of all the engineering shit used to make that thing function. At best, all you can is mount shit in the utility boxes or on the outside; anything more than that will require a lot of work and cost to do whatever the fuck it is you think you're gonna do with it.

Why would you do any of that when you could just, I dunno, buy a decent sized box truck, and load the LAN equipment up in there. Use that nice workshop to build some folding desk setups, stick some networking and/or server hardware into a rack inside the truck alongside a Generator or Two with the exhaust piped out the top of the truck. Build some stackable boxes to hold a tower, display, and peripherals each, and add hardware to the side of the box for an awning. Roll it out to an appropriate sized lot, deploy out the setup over a couple hours, and you could probably even run concessions (prepackaged, god has forsaken us if LTT gets a food truck license) out of the box truck back once its emptied out during setup.

Is a rolling LAN center stupid? Fuck yea it is, this thing is a huge rolling financial burden, and good luck generating any reasonable return with it. But its gonna be an order of magnitude cheaper to build that truck than trying to refit a vehicle dedicated to spraying water to be useful for electronics. Kind of opposite fields here, yknow?
