I would kill for Steve to do a tell-all interview with Luke after a departure like that. Is it petty to quit and then immediately shit talk your old boss? Abso-fucking-lutely. But I think that kind of petty is justified when its in response to working three jobs and being denied a salary increase because you happen to be friends after a decade of working together.Moving to North Carolina would be a huge W for Luke. He'd be able to afford more than a shoebox to live in.
Plus the getting away from the narcissist boss/owner piece.
If you are ever in Linus and Lukes situation, and there's worries about a conflict of interest in compensation discussions for someone who's otherwise very important to the organization, that's when you bring in a third party from outside the company. There's no shortage of staffing and consulting firms that'd gladly take a couple week job to assess the position and the market and let you know what it'd be worth, and pocket twenty grand for the privilege. You could also bring in a lawyer or firm, but they tend to be more specialized in adversarial salary negotiations, while consulting firms will give better results cheaper in a mutually agreed situation.
Of course this is only needed if anyone else in the organization actually feels like there'd be a serious nepotism or favoritism risk of just actually negotiating with the guy. LTT's not a small company anymore, but certainly its still a small club among the leadership. I really doubt anyone will actually bitch and moan that the guy they've all known forever is finally getting paid a reasonable sum. The real reason is likely that Luke is far from the only underpaid leadership position in the org, and that its only unfair in the context of "everyone is getting fucked".
