Billy settled a lawsuit against another Speedrun Streamer named "ApolloLegend", which pretty much killed his Youtube channel and because he was severely sick and this destroyed his channel and income he decided to end his life. (I imagine he fell into a deep depression with his hobby, income and center of life suddenly disappeared. Not atypical behavior to spiral after such a blow.)

Apollo also made videos about how all of his Speedrunning friends betrayed him (including Jobst). Ironically, Jobst may have had a bigger role in the suicide.

I personally think it was the chronic back pain.

Looks like a cancer patient
That's because he is:

I really do wonder how much him and Pootahar taking down the completionist and his videos about otherwise no-name speedrunners bolstered the thought of him thinking he could actually win against Billy in the way he did, especially with the cred of "exposing a fraudster" making it less likely for an online sluth to expose what he was actually doing in court before the judge blew the entire facade away in a heartbeat.

I personally think it was the chronic back pain.
That surely played a major role. His life falling apart around him, losing his friends, fanbase and youtube channel/income will also have played a role.
If you are already having serious health issues that you have to work through daily it is much easier to spiral when other things in your life go wrong.

You need a reason to get up every day and live through the pain, when that disappears suddenly it can appear very pointless all of a sudden.
I think it is fair to say that lots of factors could have contributed, including the lawsuit he had to settle. Just stupid to make claims about the settlement including a large sum of money if you do not have a source you can quote in court to prove your claim was made in good faith, and then not retracting properly when you are told by a party of the settlement that you are factually wrong.

Like the judge said, Karl's behavior after he was proven wrong was aggravating, because he refused to recant and apologize properly.
Which, to that I agree with the judge, he should have done if he was in fact wrong. And while I still think the judgement is moronic (primarily because the financial damage was minor at best), Karl failed to prove or even try to prove that what he claimed was factually accurate and the truth, or at least something he had reasonable believe to be the truth at the time.

[EDIT] I just really can't get over how excited Billy is when he got the fake "ApolloLegend died" news.

Q: How the hell did Billy win if he cheated at Donkey Kong?
A: Because the lawsuit was never about that aspect of Billy.
It was part of the defense but Karl's public story made it look like that was the whole case. The judge kind of eviscerated that. He was claiming Billy's reputation was already such shit it couldn't be damaged any further. The judge was basically who cares about that autistic shit, cheating at some gay videogame doesn't mean that being considered to have basically driven someone to suicide wasn't a lot more serious of an accusation.

The plaintiff really has to be serial killer level fucked up to win a "libel-proof plaintiff" defense. If the case really was about cheating at vidya, Karl probably would have won, but that was just apparently what he was grifting about.

As much as I dislike Billy, I think the judge ruled correctly in accordance with the facts.
It was never about if Billy was a scum bag cheater. It's about Karl saying untrue statements which were easy to prove false, then Karl repeating these statements when told they were untrue.
....but they are true. Having something you factually can't prove because only one person knows (and they're gone) doesn't mean something ISN'T true.

In what world do you think Billy destroying that dudes entire life, when he was already sick and had little going for him, directly before it happened DIDN'T cause it? lmao? science isn't even about 100% provable facts and you're talking about making inferences about pretty clear human behavior

what if karl kills himself? how many people have to kill themselves directly after a life ruining lawsuit until 1+1=black people are criminals?

The fact that the judge pretty much had to accept Billy's side as factual because it was not even remotely challenged by Karl and his lawyer is the biggest L that I have seen in a lawsuit for a long time.
Karl brought in the "Billy is a cheater" part because it was supposed to demonstrate that Billy is a cheater, that he is litigious, and that he lies. But all of that is completely irrelevant when you cannot show why you thought ApolloLegend paid a "large sum of money" to Billy. That statement was at the core of the lawsuit and Karl had nothing. I do not understand that. His lawyer should have KNOWN they could not win with that defense.

I think the judge is wrong, but it was on Karl to prove that in court. And he did not.

I thought lawyers couldn't lie so there was no way his lawyer could prove Billy wrong
