The golden age of the 90s is long gone & the industry doesn't know what to do. We crawled out of the 80s- decent plot ideas ruined by mediocre writing, status quo characterization(because having the villains learn & be better people is BAD!) & being toy commercials forced to shove in a blatant moral lesson instead of making it feel natural to the plot(one reason George Carlin praised Thomas the Tank Engine & enjoyed working on it was because they DID make the moral lessons feel natural). Then we get the 90s with X-Men, Batman TAS, Phantom 2040 all for kids, while adult-aimed stuff & anime pick up, while kids stuff like Spongebob had effort put into it.

Now? The internet allowed individuals to bypass the industry- not necessarily bad but it leaves no content filter. That stuff gets an audience. Old media was just as political(you could not make Hogan's Heroes today without whitey tears) but companies are more forceful, yet so many "leftist" media outlets were caught funneling millions to Republicans. The internet lets every asshole be a critic & crying "cartoon promotes genocide" is clickbait that gets pushed thanks to the welfare queen systems of ad revenue & Patreon.

As useful as the internet is, I do wonder if it did more harm than good overall.

A major factor not enough people talk about is how there really aren't any "adults" in the room anymore. A lot of companies, institutions, and dare I say it, governments, are run by "children." There's really no one to say "no" or at least be literate enough to know when someone's trying to push a political agenda or even their fetishes. And the "children" in question are very hyper-active and view a lot of complex issues in a very childish manner.

That happens online now too, I can't think of an indie show that doesn't have fetish or political content in it. At least on the Networks things had to pass S&P before they made it to air. It's like when Seth MacFarlane had free reign to make whatever he wanted with the Cavalcade of Cartoon Comedy shorts and all he did was make extremely vulgar and disgusting Family Guy-style cutaway gags. Nobody could reign that shit in before it was just posted online.

I think the issue that lead to this was S&P pointlessly censoring everything ("bottles will be spun" on a party flyer in Gravity Falls, for instance,) trying in vain to censor structural components of a show because a foreign market wouldn't like it (Steven Universe,) or not doing enough at all with actual problematic content (all of Totally Spies.) So people reject censorship on principle, which results in things that are needlessly vulgar, overly sexual, and preachy. Some censorship is good and provides a framework for things to flourish, find creative workarounds, but too much or not enough results in crap nobody wants to watch.
