The judge just ruled claiming a monetary settlement happened was defamatory because that is untrue.
Did Apollo have cost associated with the court case? Possible, but Billy did not get money as part of the settlement.
[EDIT] From the Austrlian court case ruling: "Any breach by Apollo Legend of the last of these obligations would result in him being liable to Mr Mitchell for US$25,000 in liquidated damages for each breach. Unless he committed such a breach, he did not have to pay Mr Mitchell any money. "

Context: This is the second The Completionist video he has made in a row, the first one not having a sponsorship. This one contains one, War Thunder.

Notice how he refers to the sponsorship money (specifically, "hefty sacrifice", "my money"). He believes it is his right and his money. This is not a normal view for someone to have.

You can't. In Australian court you have to file beforehand what you are doing so both sides can prepare to defend their position.
The 5 defamatory statements Billy was suing over were clear from the start. There is literally no reason to take this to trial, because Karl could never defend any of the 5 points.
"Silly Bitchell caused the suicide by financially raping Apollo Legend! Why no your honor I cannot prove that, but he cheated at Donkey Kong!"
That is pretty much what this case boils down to on Karl's side.

Karl did all those five things and could not present any evidence how he came to the conclusion they were true.
I believed he would not be retarded enough to go to court without a basis for the claims. He was.

He lied about it and the general public believed him, because he made a convincing case that Billy had been a cheater who silences people with frivolous lawsuits. The logical leap that Billy's lawsuit against Karl was also frivolous was easy to make.
