The Critical Drinker

I think in general Drinker is fine. He at least knows enough to not use the word "woke" like Nerdrotic does, even if he covers over it with "The Message". Which, on one hand is just a stop on the euphemism treadmill, but on the other there does need to be a shorthand for "hey, there's this pattern of behavior that studios are exhibiting that persists even when movies fail.

Personally, I try and stay away from buzzwords so you don't have some pedantic asshole derailing this discussion by demanding you define shit and then pulling a gotcha when the very apparent meaning of the word doesn't match the definition that's used to cover the bullshit. Is it that much better to have your own euphemism? I don't know, but at least he's not playing buzzword bingo.

That said, I'm also getting a little annoyed that everyone who hates reviewers of his group are now basically all part of the "Critical Drinker and his ilk" group. You can tell it's basically, "here's are the reviewers I don't like and this guy right here is the ringleader".

I think the issue with "the message" is that it comes across as anti-art and rather cynical. If your piece of media has a story and characters, chances are it uses themes at some point. Some themes will be more liberal-orientated, some will lean more conservative. Neither is wrong per se, it's just how they're used.

If the art in question was made cynically, do people not have the right to call it out?
If there's one thing I hate about modern entertainment, it's that creatives inject identity politics into entertainment and then get mad when critics make it part of criticism.

You cannot complain if you put something out there and someone points out that it affects the art, unless you're insisting that some things are exempt from criticism.

Well, time for me to post in the "Which video made you stop watching a YouTuber" thread.

Firefly, and everything else Josiah Whedon's sex-pest hands were on, is shit. All the characters talk like 15-year old girls on the rag, and all the "clever" twee bullshit like swearing in Chinese is not half as smart as his idiot fanboys claim.
Firefly was great because it lasted one season. If the show had continued, it would have been as bad as the movie Serenity.

It would have been the best it could possibly be if it had been a cancelled, never-released pilot, then!

Drinker takes the grift to a new level - you can crowdfund his and Mauler's new movie and if you donate enough shakels, you get an "executive drinker" credit. Damn, how generous!
Yep, he's doing another crowdfunding campaign.

So, from the sounds of things, this isn't just for one project, it's for multiple projects, all of which are shorter than the one he did last year. One being about the girl who was able to get punched a lot and not pass out immediately. And Mauler is getting his own thing funded. Okay, whatever.

But the thing that I find interesting is in the video, he says that once the kickstarter is done, he's going to be opening up submissions for people to offer ideas for their own short films that he can make. Okay, that I could get on board with, helping others get their dreams off the ground is always good. But I have concerns. It sounds like there's going to be a vote, so if I pitch an idea where a bunch of lolcows like Boogie and DSP are on a space ship and that wins, despite the script being shit, will he still make it?

Just checked the page and it's almost funded.

Wish I'd caught the video from drinker referenced here before he privated it. Pretty funny if he really does throw blame around for no one liking his little attempt at a TV show pilot.

Wow, what a bitter ass prick. Can yell about "dem wokies can take muh criticism", but when he makes shit and cannot take criticism he'll gladly blame it on everyone else.

He better not look into online reviews of his books, they're ruthless.

Just goes to show it's a lot easier picking out things someone else did wrong after the fact, than it is to do something right all on your own from scratch.

a guy in this video watched the video before drinker deleted it. tl;dr: the main actress was a bitch who couldn't deliver her lines so the script had to be dumbed down for her, people donated too much money and the expectations were too big, the movie was only generic and had bad writing because for the first movie anyone ever creates, you can't make anything experimental so that your dumb audience gets it and also people who critized the movie for having girl bosses are dumb because it was actually written perfectly.

Has any critic ever successfully made anything? Space Cop was unwatchable imo, Stuckmans movie looks dull, I never even considered giving drinkers Jack Ryan fan film thing 30 seconds of my time to see how much it sucked.

You'd think people who spend their time picking apart the work of others would at least be able to avoid certain pitfalls but they end up making similar mistakes as the things they criticize.

Harlan Ellison wrote some critic pieces and he's well regarded as a writer. Hell, James Cameron stole a bunch of his ideas to make Terminator. But Harlan was a writer who did some critic work for a pay check. RLM are too high on their "We're too cool to give a fuck" Gen X bullshit to make anything good so Space Cop had to be shit, though I did find it enjoyable enough as a fun bad movie.

Roger Ebert wrote Beyond the Valley of the Dolls. That's about it.

Never heard of James Agee?

Also TCD is absolutely not a critic and barely qualifies as a reviewer... I'd even trust Doug Walker over him and his posse of outrage-grifters
