Competent people are expensive. His employess, who are paid a pittance, are not. What I really don't get is why Linus doesn't hire people who know what they're doing, and just include it in the video. I'm sure there's competent tradespeople who wouldn't mind being featured in a video.
He used to hire a real electrician, but that guy seemed to disappear when the new house shit started. I guess he has standards and wasn't going to risk his license to do the jank stuff that linus wantedWhat I really don't get is why Linus doesn't hire people who know what they're doing, and just include it in the video. I can see a very narrow market fit around managing to get set up right beside a major college campus, but you'd have to go more Net Cafe than pure LAN center, not that there's much of a difference these days. Students tend to have a low but consistent disposable income, enough to consume luxury entertainment but not so much as to afford a full RTX 50-series build on their own. Dorms aren't exactly pleasant anyway, so getting out with the gang to a place where you can party up in person and play whatever the game of the month is would have some appeal. Throw some overpriced packaged food onto the menu, or even go fancy with a basic kitchen for reheating Sysco prepackaged slop and you're more or less set. Your staffing costs would basically be minimal too, wouldn't be hard to find a few college students who are willing to man the register, have basic computer tech skills, and will work for minimum wage at weird hours in return for being allowed to study at the counter when not busy.I don't think lan centers are a good business venture in developed countries where people can afford a PC/console of their own. I guess there are enough indians and chinks in canada that it may work out. Probably not a lot of niggers either.
These seem incompatible with linus tho. He will clearly go overboard and over expand; a little hole in the wall isn't good enough for him. We aren't talking about some normal guy wanting to start a lan center we are talking about a massive egomaniac with a large credit line. You wouldn't be running a massive enterprise, but with a bit of luck and some competency, you could manage a decent little local hole in the wall, and pocket an ok profit for something that should be relatively hands off. You'd just have to resist the urge to try and expand too much, or into expensive niches like VR or the such. Despite being a tech entertainment business, you really want to keep it simple.
As someone who actually does do electrical work and construction work that is several code violations in one video how is this man not burnt down his own house with his shoddy constructionLinus doing a jank ass watercooling setup on his "million dollar" server. i'm sure we won't be back again when it breaks.
Seeing Jake give Linus gruff for just bulling on ahead about three and a half minutes in there feels... simultaneously great and frustrating. These seem incompatible with linus tho. Every minute of this video is a disaster for too many reasons to list but I genuinely wonder:

they don't have computer labs in colleges anymore? there were easily hundreds of unused computers at college you just needed a student ID to use back in my day, at minimum just so you could have a place to print, and i doubt its any different now.I can see a very narrow market fit around managing to get set up right beside a major college campus, but you'd have to go more Net Cafe than pure LAN center, not that there's much of a difference these days
haven't the cons outweighted the pros for most use cases in watercooling? its gotten better but its still not something most people use as their primary cooling system, best case they use it for their GPUIt's honestly quite funny how obsessed Linus is with watercooling. I like watercooling as much as the next guy, but he has an unhealthy obsession with it. He acts like a child that learns a new concept, and then tries to apply it to everything.
Because, as was revealed in the video, radiators-in-doors are actually a thing. The servers are already moving air, they can move it through the radiator if you mount it properly... Properly. With, you know, a server rack that's actually sealed and everything, so the fans can actually create a pressure gradient between the front and the back...
- Why is the cooling setup in the door and not a side panel or something?
That is interesting and now that it's been explained to me, it makes sense. I've only had contact with servers in naked racks but cooled whole rooms, but I'm also a big gay larper of a sysadmin even then.Because, as was revealed in the video, radiators-in-doors are actually a thing. The servers are already moving air, they can move it through the radiator if you mount it properly... Properly.
Depends on the place, issuing laptops tends to be the more popular option now, there's not many classes that absolutely need a full desktop build. Even in places where you need the peripheral setup, issue laptop with a USB3 docking hub will get the job done. The labs that are still out there are not likely to be any better equipped for you and the boys to LAN on than a $400 issued laptop would be. Not to mention calling your friend a camping faggot isn't the kind of thing that's safe to say on the modern college campus.they don't have computer labs in colleges anymore
For sure, he'd insist on every machine constantly being absolutely top tier, 5090 founders with new CPU's and Mobo's every six months, half the machines would be perpetually offline because there's no way he's taking a dedicated hardware tech. He'll take that theoretical student studying behind the counter and expect them to spend all their hours rebuilding rigs professionally for him instead. And just wait until he decides to try and set up one monolithic interconnected mother of all watercooling systems. I can hear him now sperging about how the sheer thermal mass of sharing one massive reservoir means they'll never overheat. And it'll probably last all of a week before a customer bumps a computer, pops a chinesium fitting, and vents a LAN warehouse worth of water out that one pipe, absolutely ruining everyones day.We aren't talking about some normal guy wanting to start a lan center we are talking about a massive egomaniac with a large credit line.
Its worse than that, this is his business and not his house. So what you've seen in violations; multiply that by probably 5x because this is a commercial space. Instead of just risking the lives of his family he's risking the entire business park being burned. As someone who actually does do electrical work and construction work that is several code violations in one video how is this man not burnt down his own house with his shoddy construction
