Mega Rad Gun Thread

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
Maybe not the right thread to ask but I saw an add for, what I think was like a pepper ball gun. It fires little rubber balls of pepper spray at people with compressed air as a sort of non-lethal alternative to carrying a pistol around. Anybody got any experience with that sort of thing? Usable by an older lady? Any recommendations?
Just get pepper spray instead. Its more easily transportable/concealable and no one will mistake your little canister of OC spray as a deadly weapon. I'd recommend it over basically every other non-lethal defensive options (besides stuff like situational awareness). People who say its not effective usually haven't experienced it firsthand. I've only been exposed to it to an extremely indirect degree and it was very unpleasant. Would not recommend.

I don't really understand the point of pepper ball guns outside of professional use in riot control or something, not for self defense from a random aggro NPC.

I'm going to echo the others and say it's not a good idea. Presenting a gun-shaped object is not great because it's escalating the situation in a way their brain will see as a more lethal threat than intended and have more dire results in the case that it does not work.
Pepper spray or, if she really hates people, bear spray would be a much better idea.
9mm 1911...
Blasphemy or blast happy?
Guess I'm going to find out.
.38 Super is an alternative choice for that vintage feel but 9mm 1911s have been a treasured piece for decades now.
You can't say it's too much cheaper than .45 ACP anymore but 9x19 in bulk is a lot lighter and smaller.

The mat's are in English so I'd assume this is at their Georgia facility.
Ruger makes a Glock
Glock makes an AR
Doesn't look to my eye to have any of the tech that they patented (annular gas piston, monolithic barrel and barrel extension etc) but the gas block looks to have four screws securing it (two at 6 o'clock and 1 each at 5' and 7')
Also maybe I'm just dumb but the lower is two different colors, and the transition is a straight line just forward of the hammer pin, modular magwells? is we getting a Glock AR that that takes Glock brand Glock mags?
Only real question is it getting a numeric designation like regular Glocks (Glock-15 doesn't count)

Also Gen 6 may or may not be Modular (but maybe not FCU modular). Patent is from 2023 (i think anyway) so take this info as you will

Some Brazilians (actual ones not Sam Hyde (((Brazilians))) were at least in the process of converting some old timey rifle (either a Carcano or Gewehr-88) to either semi or full auto , I have absolutely no Idea what cartridge it could be chambered in but I don't think it would be in the original chambering(s) but nothing else would make sense unless they were somehow able to sleeve or replace the barrel, the magazine looks to be shortened compared to the loading area (which obviously has to be at least the length of the chambered cartridge)

They're doing ground breaking suppressor design work over on reddit (this guy stole my idea via mind reading, I had thought this up months before he did). For those that don't get it, Imagine a KAC suppressor but the dimples are internal.

It looks pretty sweet, especially with a stock 65 degree safety. I'd definitely pick up a Glock AR grip if they sold furniture separately, they would give Magpul a run for their money.

It just looks like it's part of the geometry of the lower, it looks like they have an ambi bolt catch above the magazine release.

pepper ball gun
in police use (from my own experience as well as others) pepper balls have a worse chance of working than tasers and tasers are only like 3/4 effective. typically the contents of the plastic (not rubber) balls is an oil-based capsaicin, much like pepper spray (sabre is my preferred supplier). it creates a burning sensation that cannot be flushed with water and sticks to skin and clothing very easily; additionally it is blinding if in the eyes much the same way as any other irritant is.

it is not effective other than as a compliance tool beyond this, and a small percent of the population is immune to the effect (i have been pepper sprayed and mace'd during police training and it bothers me but not enough to incapacitate - i've also used it to flavor tortillas and tamales to illustrate that for someone that is used to it or has high tolerance they do very little). so if someone means to do you harm it often does nothing - at least a taser physically interferes with motor control via high voltage and pain.

these pistol-shaped launchers (rather than the paintball markers i'm familiar with and sell) are more popular in europe and also come in a "gas pistol" form. again, part of the appeal is that it's not a real gun and so many gun-specific laws do not apply to it, however often is the case where someone else has a real gun and sees your non-gun and shoots you - escalating a mugging into a murder. it also happens that if someone is careless with it - laisez faire in presentation and application - using it via presentation, carry, concealment, et c can catch criminal charges.

if i'm a responding officer to "someone waving around a gun in walmart" and i catch someone concealing a pepper ball gun, that's a warning, but if that carrier's pepper ball gun is disguised as a pen or something, or is closely resembling a real gun, that's a felony in CA and we're not the only states to have that provision. likewise brandishing a pepper ball gun has the same criminal charge as brandishing a real gun.

lastly, pepper balls (their contents) expire after a year or so and need to be replaced. further really cheap ones can leak or fail because they often rely on pressurized air to propel the ball and the really cheap ones aren't all that great with fittings, valves, or gaskets/o-rings.

if someone refuses to carry a gun, i encourage them to both not place themselves in risky situations as well as carry a more traditional pepper spray canister like sabre. they are cheap enough that buying one or two (purse and home) once a year is nothing and they are reasonably effective about half the time or better and often have no issues with concealment or gun-shape laws.

people that insist on being easier victims through personal political action or inaction should enjoy the fruits of those politics.

bear spray would be a much better idea.
bear spray is formulated thinner for farther travel distance when sprayed. to make up for the thin viscosity, the concentration of capsaicin is increased slightly. this often goes over the legal limit of concentration for self defense against people because beyond a certain point the fluid is permanently blinding and is treated as intent to cause grievous bodily harm when used against people because people are not bears or similar wild animals.

I've been sprayed by LEO issued stuff. It sucks but if I was determined to hurt someone it wouldn't have stopped me. That's quite a bit different from a ball launcher. Much worse. If she won't get a gun then I'd have to suggest a taser over spray. A real one. And a real home security system. For outside the house yeah a gel spray is probably the best you can get like from Sabre. She needs to understand the risks of her own safety with spray. It can absolutely get on you or be in the air enough to also affect you. Some people have very harsh reactions to it even when not hit by it. If she wears contact lenses that's an extra hazard if she's contaminated they need to be removed ASAP, but she also should not touch her eyes or rub her eyes if it's on her hands. A big hazard with spray is if the person doesn't stop and they contaminate you and you've never been under the effects of it before and they have, you're going to have a bad fucking time.

If you've been sprayed or have pepper spray keep Decontamination wipes and baby shampoo. Milk doesn't really help much and it's not sterile. Decon wipes and baby shampoo the fuck out of your eyes and hair. Keep your eyes lubricated afterwards they will be dry as fuck for a while. Resist the temptation to breathe or open your mouth when it hits you. Avoid the temptation to touch your face unless with something to wipe it away. Getting it on your hands is going to cause you massive trouble. DON'T TOUCH YOUR JUNK AND BEWARE OF SHOWERING WITHOUT FIRST DECON AS IT WILL BURN YOUR BENIS OR VAGOO. They make special decon wipes for spray. On Amazon.

I'd seriously suggest getting her to at least try shooting a gun. A ez 380 has a easy to rack slide and basically no recoil.

Here's a fun video of a cop being sprayed by a guy

That's debatable but I will concede on the grounds of legal suggestion.
CA Penal Code 22810 covers "tear gas" (pepper spray and MACE) legality and use as well as concealment. CA Code of Regulations (Title 3, Division 6, Subdivision 2, Chapter 3, Article 10) lumps bear spray as a pesticide used to control wild flora and fauna. on the surface bear spray (and to a limited extent, OC spray as well) is not a "tear gas" for personal protection, which is the regulated allowed use.

consult a lawyer versed in the area of law in the state/county where you live when there are any questions related to this sort of thing. because from experience, and as a reserve officer, i have confiscated bear and OC sprays from people because they do not know the difference and told them to get mace or pepper spray instead which is actually protected under statute.

I agree but it's not for me, and I won't be able to convince her to carry a real gun.
Out of curiosity, why not? Carrying something other than a gun for self defense is sort of like picking up a pair of pliers to drive a nail. It can work, but it's not exactly the best tool for the job.

Not the guy but I never could convince Mom to carry until the grandkids came along and She asked me what kind of gun I recommended. Was genuinely not worried about herself, and I and the other kids couldn't convince her otherwise, but grandkid maybe being hurt got her asking about and shooting .380's and 9's. Some people are weird that way.

9mm 1911...
Blasphemy or blast happy?
Guess I'm going to find out.

I'm of the mind that if you're going to go for a traditional single stack 1911 it needs to be chambered for either .45 ACP or 10mm, with .38 Super also being acceptable. If you're going for a double stack 1911/2011 then 9mm, 10mm, or .38 Super are the way to go. I love both my Dan Wesson Specialist .45 ACP and my Staccato P 9mm. If I were to get another 1911 based pistol it would probably be in 10mm Auto, but I would make sure it's one designed to hold up to the hot stuff without cracking or battering itself to pieces as many of the older 10mm 1911 are known to do, like the original Colt Delta Elites.

If anyone cares, I took your advice and avoided the jet sig. Now I'm waiting on tax stamps for a b&t tp9 sbr and the can. I also have a gigliotti trigger that needs installing because 11lbs is an affront to God. Probably going to go with an acro and a holosun iris 2 on a knockoff Hydra mount for optics.
