Marathon 2025 has less in common with the 3 original games than Halo C.E. has in common with the Marathon games.

Also surprised no one posted the Mandalore reviews of the 3 Marathon Games. I would recommend watching if you want to understand why this 2025 version is such a fucking insult but is not up to playing the games. Even if you played the games you should watch, and if you want to watch Mandalore will warn you of spoliers so you can click off the video.

The original trilogy was not really that amazing game play wise, but the story that Bungie tried to make for it was fucking bonkers. It showed a level of respect for the player and a true commitment to trying something new. It is like the perfect diametrical opposite of the current 2025 remake which is literally the bottom of the barrel "what is popular right now" recycle bin of game design.

That's a difficult question, if you have low tolerance for older FPS games then I doubt you will have much fun. They're free on Steam however, so you have nothing to lose. At the very least look up what they're about, since the narrative is amazing. Mandalore did a good series of videos(there is a non-Marathon game that directly involved with the narrative, keep that in mind).

I still play Doom Duke3D and Wolf3D and a lot of older games. So that shouldn't be an issue. I have watched a few videos about them. I might install one and give it a try. I watched the Mandalore video about them a while ago.

I have seen videos of it but I never played it. From what I understand it's proto Halo. I think it was one of Bungies first games.

Is it worth playing these days?

Depends on your tolerance for maze map design in oldschool FPS. They're free though. The story is great and Durandal is easily one of the best "AI gone psycho" up there with SHODAN and AM. Also a great soundtrack with some fun fanmade remixes out there.

But I suspect many are personally invested in a look that is purposefully bad to make a point about it being "punk" even if that said look is bad and cluttered only causing damage to the game.

To be fair, the story of the original 3 Marathon games was fantastic and I bet this is what they were trying to recreate, or at least invoke with the reboot. Shame it won't go anywhere, it would take quite a lot of talent to write a similar narrative as the original Marathon trilogy in an always online game as a service extraction shooter slopfest, and nu-Bungie just doesn't have the chops for it.

I am trying to think through what the trannycore aesthetic is. It's at the "I know it when I see it" stage.

It seems that a key part of it is that it fails the Did You Think About This For Five Fucking Minutes test. The Five Fucking Minutes test is whether or not it appears the developer thought for Five Fucking Minutes about anything other than looking cool and selling battle passes.

It's not full realism, but note the soldiers. They're wearing the same thing and wearing earth tones. Somebody thought about it for Five Fucking Minutes and realized that in the future, camouflage will still matter, and soldiers will still get standard-issue uniforms, and you'll still want body armor and helmets to protect you from shrapnel and debris at minimum. Note the monolithic architecture. It's old, and probably built out of some metallic or concrete-like substance, so earth tones just make sense. The assault rifle clearly wasn't designed by a gun nut, and the infantry uniforms could be improved, but it got its Five Fucking Minutes.

I think another element is a total lack of authentic masculinity. Combat is intrinsically masculine, but trannies hate their own manhood and fantasize about being anime females. Trannies tend to exist almost entirely in hyperreal online spaces, so their designs lack weight, grittiness, and danger, even when they're making games about soldiers fighting wars. Somehow, they make everything they touch feel like a safe space to talk about your fursona (and why it's gay).

Of course, femininity can't be authentic, either. Trannies don't know what a woman is, since they think they're women, so their female characters tend to be a mess of Dollar General makeup, seething libtard rage, and anime-inspired style cues. Case in point:

This all pisses me off because the weird motherboard aesthetic combined with the cyberpunk themes of identity loss and replaceability are things I really like, but it's being done by queers who don't know how to meaningfully convey these ideas to people who aren't retarded. All in service of a game that has barely anything to do with the IP it's allegedly attached to.
I was expecting it to suck because it's an extraction shooter, but I thought it might at least be interesting in spite of that like Marauders. It's all so disappointing.

This game is going to die on arrival, if it's not the aesthetic, or the potential $40 - $60 price tag, it is the sandbox and balancing. the WHOLE concept of the Runners and having abilities, literally in the same vein as Destiny 2's classes, DOES NOT WORK in an extraction-based shooter game, unless you intend on making it a game no-one takes seriously and has no reason to play more than once or twice with you friends.
This games balancing is going to be shit (same team behind current day d2 pvp.) and will literally KILL the game in a week. I promise you, this game will be dead in less than a month of release. This game will be hot on Twitch and YouTube for maybe a week, slow down by the second week, forgotten on the third, dead by fourth.
