MARATHON Trilogy - Official Trilogy, Forge & Anvil, and Scenarios

THEY HAVE NOT EVEN STARTED ON THE STORY YET AND THEY ARE 5 MONTHS AWAY FROM RELEASE.
Lol, good ol' Bungo, still haven't changed a bit. Destiny died so this shit heap could be shot in the cradle. I hope this failure in the making finally makes Sony fully absorb them. It's hard to believe that they created the original halo series and the gem in the rough that was destiny (the first one). Games I have a find memory of.

This genre of cyber slop multiplayer shooters has only failed so far never even crawling before falling down. First was Hyenas and no one learned, then Concord died shortly after. Next it will be Marathon, time will tell if anyone will learn from this.

Another soul to be fed to the Tarkov machine.

GET READY FOR ESCAPE vs Escape will make me a God

you can tell there was a shift from the eariler trailer
That's because this game went through at least one development reboot after the multiple rounds of layoffs Bungie had in the last few years, which were themselves the result of Destiny being wildly mismanaged.

I mean, look at this. This looks like a clown vomited on the screen.

This looks like a lazy cash grab mobile game.

You can just see how it's been sloppified from OG Marathon.

This shit looks like it was AI generated.
And that comparison's an insult to AI.
I like the cinematography and the visual style in general, but when you look close enough it just gets gay. The character designs are eye-searing and the pretentious narrator (probably Durandal) reciting Ozymandias is too pretentious even for me. It reminds me of Rian Johnson stylistically, and I say that with equal parts praise and scorn.
Oddly, I think the design I hate the most is the titan-looking guy with the Security Officer helmet. His armor has a really soft plastic look to it like it's inflatable. I think I wouldn't mind the goth sniper guy (voiced by Adam Jensen, lol) if he was a standalone design, but everybody looks like they just walked off the set of a Jaguar commercial so he's just another gay brick in the gay wall.

Watched a few vids on this and the consensuses seems to be that the basic gun play is pretty good, the art style is striking (good or bad) and the extraction shooter live service system is concerning.

Lets start with the art style. It's certainly unique but that's not always a good thing. It could probably be toned down a bit and I don't know if the kind of muted lighting suits the colour palette but I kind of like it. I'm not too fussed on the hero character's design, they're both visually busy while also being bland. Bungie has released Marathon promo art with better looking characters so it's not like they couldn't be better.

As for gameplay, well I haven't played this obviously so who knows but here's what I see. The gun play seems a lot like Destiny. I played Destiny 1 and 2 a lot so that's a good thing imo. Movement looks to be a bit more limited and slower than Destiny or Halo which isn't great. The specials aren't that exciting either. The extraction shooter stuff is what really puts me off. First, the semi-permadeath and full season reset just seems like a massive fun killer. Forcing multiplayer PvP is going to turn some people off. Some times you just want to play by yourself or PvE and to not offer the option is just weird. Especially since Destiny had that. I know for a fact that Bungie isn't going to be able to keep up with content too.

There's enough here that I'd give the game some time and a fair shake if it was free to play but I'm not paying for the privilege to have Bungie build the game while I play it like they did with Destiny. I don't really care that this is a reboot of Marathon. The original games had some neat ideas but weren't that good for this to be some kind of sacrilege.

I'm fuggin depressed seeing this shit. The trailer wasn't bad, but the style is just... dated. This cyber-minimalist-neon-pastel look fails to impress me; it looks like a hodgepodge or moodboard of stuff that already exists or was handled better in a different medium. I cannot get over the guns (not even a gun sperg); the OG trilogy's arsenal was distinct and had character. The models for all the weapons shown look like roblox guns; the Vector, while being distinctly futuristic/modern still has a unique silhouette. I couldn't say what purpose/role any of the guns suited at face value without me knowing the Bungie reticles.

I'm really over the beat-to-death identity crisis plots paired with cyber settings.

This is one of those baffling reboots where the franchise has been dormant for so long that it has lost relevancy in the modern gaming community so what are we actually rebooting here an idea, a concept, a genre or style? From what I understand this really has nothing to do with the old Marathon games which was a story based shooter like Doom. I know Marathon games were well loved but I dont think many people recognize the name anymore. So why not just create a new IP? Feels like the whole idea of this game is lacking confidence or sure footedness and hence slapping the Marathon title on it despite no real connection to the franchise. Just very odd.

Also the art style reminds me of the old CG cartoon reboot, or that game Cruelty squad. I would call this art style mid 90s lasertag pizzapartycore. I dont entirely hate it. It's something different but I am not sure people are going to be attached enough to it to buy skins.

I wish it was just a fleshed out single player game with a cool story about post human mercs fighting for control of planet.

I imagine Marathon looking a lot like Halo CE, so there was always going to be tonal disconnect from the reboot’s goofy art direction.

This new Marathon game gives me all the same vibes that Concord did.
An extremely expensive cinematic short film?
Check.
An aesthetic that has very niche appeal?
Check.
AND, it's a genre of game that a lot of people are sick of?
Check.

Personally, while I don't expect a complete bomb like Concord was, this game is unlikely to make money. I suspect it will at least get a few sales from Bungie's name recognition alone.

One difference is that Concord's cinematic looked about as good as the game itself did, whereas the production value of Marathon's cinematic makes the game look embarrassingly cheap.

They say they REFUSE to have proximity voice chat because it's "toxic".

Big ass red flag for the developers.
Isn‘t shooting other people toxic?
Doesn‘t the use of guns incite violence?

Isn‘t the looting aspect a way to make vandalism and robbery seem „fun“?
Sound very problematic to me.

Having multiple playable characters with different stats and abilities means that people are not created equally?

So that means that some people or rather…races are better than others?!
Sounds really racist to me.

I hope the devs have disabled teabagging or that might mean that they enabling harassment!

So it's a queer sci fi tarkov which seemingly barely even connect to the other games?

and intentionally refuses viop because someone might say nigger? They literally say they can't moderate it so it must be removed.

I can always understand if a game can't add voice chat for budget or technical reasons, but refusing because it's "toxic" is dumb.

Another note, since marathon was made free on steam recently, this seems very intentionally and marketed.

Really I think this new game is going to need a dedicated thread. This sounds like a classic case of using an IP to sell unrelated slop.

They went from "I don't have time to explain why I don't have time to explain" to "Just make your own story bro", lmao

No, given the type of people they employ, I bet they are scared of hearing "you're a dude" or "YWNBAW".
