Let's Sperg Marathon 2025 - Bungie's new AAAA Extraction shooter

I don't really like the art style, and absolutely hate the colors of everything. No one wants to play hideous characters. You have to have that power fantasy where you can look like a badass, or else what is the point? How do you do progression? Get new armor? Who cares you still look gay and ugly. No one wants to look like a rave reject as designed by an acid trip.
All the characters' colors schemes look like they're using one of those filler tier battle pass skins.

I don't predict Concord level of failure. Maybe a Dragon Age Veilguard or Payday 3 level failure. 200k units vs a 150 million dollar budget sort of failure.
thats horrid numbers for a game thats multiplayer only, at least Dragon Age is a Singleplayer game, the fact is no one wants to play it and its really going to show when it launches to an underwhelming auidence, they really should have just doubled down on Destiny as theres at least a loyal fanbase there

Remember this is the only company in the industry that has a commitment to avoiding "overdelivery" to where they've alienated their core audience and drove them to indifference with the sheer neglect of their cashcow franchise. This "gambit 2.0" title is not worth caring about.

I really think that a large part of the Destiny fanboys are gonna at least check Marathon out.
I've been hanging out in the discord server and its busy with over 65k members.
Not that 65k is gonna be enough to push the game into playability, but there seems to be enough buzz over "new thing from Bungie" that it's caught the attention of the normies.

Also, the devs on the discord server have been surprisingly laid back. There has been a "meme" of people reacting with the pregnant male emoji 🫃

Some of the people in the server are getting really upset about it and crying to the devs/mods. To which they respond: 🫃

Pretty funny shit watching them sperg tbh

yeah some might check it out to start but its really not going to last, people wanted Bungie to just be the Destiny studio and continue making content for that, so when they made something in a different universe plus it being peak Troonslop really upset people, not to mention the Destiny community being in complete and utter meltdown over the next expansion not being revealed (although its apparently releasing in July)

All they have to do to make me play it is make it SLIGHTLY better than DMZ without being 200 gigs on my computer.

Extraction shooters are a niche genre with a very loyal core audience. If they convert even 1% of the Destiny players into full time marathon players, it may have a chance.

I'm setting a very low bar and I still expect to be highly disappointed.

I'm expecting high queue times, but if they can make sure the netcode is snappy, they're in better shape than 99% of the extraction shooters on the market. It really won't take much for the game to take off, initially, with all of the attention the ARG drummed up.

Because Destiny's story was cut at the last minute, and the sequel was made from Destiny 1 left overs.
Yep, and that was the extent of Jones involvement in Destiny's development. With a lot of help from people like Staten and other OGs who've since left. It's very easy to see what was part of the original lore, and what was developed by others once the other OGs were kicked out and Jones got bored.

They can't anymore, they completely ruined the universe, it's a dead franchise as far as growth goes. And Jones wants nothing to do with it, just like he did with Halo after 2. The only people still hanging on are those suffering from an absurd level of sunk cost.

I should know, I played up until several months after Witch Queen released. I was already painfully aware of all the flaws with the story and bored to death of the recycled seasonal content. Yet I kept playing, desperately trying to get back what I felt playing the OG Destiny and TTK. Forsaken and Beyond Light showed brief glimpses of what could've been, but even they had major cracks. I stopped playing a bit before Lightfall was announced, and when they showed it off I could no longer muster any enthusiasm. As more details came out I decided that 8 years of dragging myself to try and get back that feeling of fun running VOG, CE and KF with friends (admittedly some of the best gaming memories I have) was enough, and I should move on.

funnily enough, they literally just announced a new expansion today but your probably right that they cannot get new fans at this point, just loyalists that will buy the DLCs year over year, I would have had more confidence in Marathon had it been anything other than an Extraction Shooter/Battle Royale, I hate one-life type multiplayer games, even CoD and Halo in their current states are more preferable to what they have done with Marathon

What are the odds it's, "based on the lore from the classic Marathon Trilogy from 1994", in statement only. As in literally nothing but a couple names are the same and everything else, and I do mean everything - as in every thing - will be different?
Place your bets, but just know they're 100 to 0.
So is this pretty much like the time Obsidian tried to pass The Outer Worlds as the successor to Fallout New Vegas?
It's like to Ottomans pretending they're the successor to Rome because the Byzantines pretended to be the successors to Rome.

LOL just from that Image I can see it's about the Nine. Which is aesthetically the closest content Destiny has to what they've shown of NuMarathon. I suspect it isn't a coincidence. I wonder how they'll ruin the Nine after what they did to the Darkness. Shame, I spent some very enjoyable times playing the Prophesy dungeon with a friend, completing it as a duo instead of trio as intended. If only NuMarathon had something similar.

Agreed, it’ll probably be a shitshow mess considering it involves The Nine, I don’t see how they could do anything intreresting lorewise after we killed off the Witness, they could have expanded on the Vex but I guess we can’t have nice things

That's good enough. I come from a time where as long as you could fill a server, the game was still kicking.

However, those numbers are in the ball park of my prediction. Let's say 3-5 times the discord numbers. I don't remember the numbers for The Division, Payday 3, and other looter shooters that limped along with enough players to keep the servers on, but not enough for the game to be successful. But it's somewhere in that range.

Extraction shooters are a niche genre with a very loyal core audience.
This is the interesting part to me. In the same way looter-shooter became a thing after Borderlands and Destiny, Extraction shooters are the next big thing. However, the fanbase says over and over "the autism friction is the point". I disagree with that assessment, but it will fun to see them try.

95%. Or 5%. It depends on if you count them taking named characters (AI included) and making them gay or trans as "based on the lore".

Can't. Destiny has been a dead franchise for a while.
Gameplay and content wise two DLC packs (Taken King and Witch King) mattered and Bungie was incapable of maintaining that quality.
Story wise, the game was killed before release, the death certificate signed when they blew up the tower in Destiny 2, and the insurance money collected when they killed off Nathan Fillion.

i like the way this sucks.webp
This is me playing tarkov, getting my shit stomped in by 7mm buckshot scavs who hitscan-one tap me to the head with a bag full of high value loot.

Honestly, if Marathon can deliver 1/10 the feeling of Tarkov, I will be playing it for a little while.

Man, it's a shame because Marathon has some awesome schizo ass lore that'll probably be butchered into the same old human bad/bug & demon worship by "media literate" folx

I hear you, but if they wanted to reboot Marathon and be a two-game studio it really should have been either a Single-player shooter or just a normal multiplayer shooter (a 4v4 Arena shooter to compete with Halo would have been what I went with personally) with the latter option it would have helped Bungie re-establish themselves as a studio that could do a proper dedicated PvP game because lets face it Destiny 2 PvP fuckin sucks, and they could also keep doing Destiny 2 DLCs like they do now to satisfy the captured audience they have on that side, they had a prime oppurnity to satisfy fans who just wanted a normal fucking shooter with Marathon and they fumbled it

This whole "you're an expendable 3d printed shell worth absolutely nothing" concept would have worked a hell of a lot better in a pure PvE experience. Think something like Payday, but if you die you get dinged funds from whatever you've snagged along the way, and redeploy to the planet via drop pod. Would also allow for cosmetics and classes without the PvP issues of target recognition and balance.

To tie it into Marathon even slightly you could be salvaging the ruins of a failed colony that was attacked by <enemy>.

I think Bungies honestly just fucked. Bungie has kinda always been making the same game over and over but with a different world and atmosphere. Marathon was basically sci-fi Pathways Into Darkness. Then Halo was supposed to sci-fi Myth but eventually became basically a reboot of Marathon with all the same Bungie hallmarks. Crazy AIs, mutliracial alien group bent on Humanitys death, Martian revolt against a one world government, slight horror vibes, theological and myth inspired names. Now what are they doing? Just rebooting an old thing straight up instead of making a new world, why? Probably because all the people who made those worlds are gone. Joe Staten ain't around to build up a world from the ground up, neither is Greg Kirkpatrick or Eric Nylund.

Does anyone else feel that this game's AI just looks boring to fight? I'm still interested otherwise but my god the AI is worse than Destiny 2 weaklings! I also found the guns to be too box like? I'm not sure how else to put it, but they are quite ugly and I wish they looked more traditional for a Bungie game.
