I totally agree that they don’t actually care, but there’s pressure because there’s resentment that xi moved up the timeline and might ruin decades of effort for his own glory, and that in turn feeds Xi feeling stuck, that if he backs down it’s the end for him.

But as far as it actually affecting the likelihood of war, China still has a bunch of hardware sitting around, and they’re still threatening everyone around. The Phillipines are itchy to jump in if anything pops off because they’re tired of being fucked with, and China has three ships sitting just out of sight of Sydney harbor

I mean there's different avenues for the CCP to pursue, sure. I think the real money is just that there's some trade deal made in the next month or so, both parties walk away acting as if neither lost and what we're left with is just the same shit as before. Trump wants a 'victory' that people aren't going to flay him for and even if it just results in a net effect of slight tariffs on China and a slight lightening of their tariffs on the U.S., the people who are loyalists will defend it to the death as owning China just as I'm sure Xi's fanbase - assuming he has one - will defend his actions in turn.

Still the possibility exists for expansionist action, again, given Trump's anti-war posturing to win the election and the ongoing and obvious path being laid down for him to go to war with Iran on Israel's behalf. It'd be the right time and the right excuse for it if they really ever wanted it. Though as a certain person pointed out they're going for the 'cultural' rather than 'domination' victory with Taiwan it would seem, and they've made strides in that, so who knows.

I just wanted to point out that it is a real possibility and if it kicks off it is not because of genuine desperation.

The whole reason I'm still checking this thread is because pretty much every other media avenue is dead at the moment. Trump's rise to power broke the entertainment industry's collective brains so hard and they still haven't recovered from it. That's not even getting into the brainrot that's affected the general userbase of the internet, where the past decade made everyone into "gay softbois."

The Defense Department's (DOD) deputy chief of staff was placed on administrative leave on Tuesday, following the steps of another Pentagon official earlier in the day.
Darin Selnick, the deputy chief of staff for Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, has been removed, a senior U.S. official confirmed to Fox News.
Selnick is under investigation for the same leak probe that saw Hegseth aide Dan Caldwell escorted out of the Pentagon by security. Both Selnick and Caldwell are on administrative leave.
According to the Pentagon's website, Selnick is a retired Air Force officer who has worked extensively in veterans' affairs organizations.
"Mr. Selnick leverages his extensive government and non-government experience advocating for veterans to position Service members for productive post-separation lives from the first day they put on a uniform," the biography states.

Both Selnick and Caldwell worked for Concerned Veterans for America in the past, a group formerly led by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
Reuters reported that Caldwell was placed on leave for an "unauthorized disclosure," as part of an investigation into leaked Pentagon documents.
The probe was announced last month, and concerned itself over "recent unauthorized disclosures of national security information."

Politics has become entertainment to me at this point tbh.

To me, that's the problem. During the transition from Obama to Trump, politics went from being something only the grown-ups followed, to becoming a part of pop-culture. The 2016 election season spawned so many memes, and generated so much discussion online, that the Internet never really went back. And everyone in the country put the battle for political ideals at the center of their thinking, and at the center of their creative works, both corporate and independent.

There are just some people who are not cut out for politics, and really never should've gotten into them to begin with.
