Let's Sperg Marathon 2025 - Bungie's new AAAA Extraction shooter

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
I can't believe they actually made Marathon about running, so far as to call the characters "Runners". Modern game devs are completely out of touch.
See I hated the term "runner" because it sounded insultingly generic for a series as unique as Marathon but now that you've brought this to my attention I hate it even more.

I saw the trailer on my phone yesterday and at the beginning, I was looking at the upper left corner of my screen, expecting the little X symbol to come up, because I thought it was an ad for a shitty chinese mobile fps game and I wanted to get into the actual video, it was only like 20 seconds in I realized this WAS the actual game.

As someone who played a ton of Halo CE in highschool and only knows Marathon as some game Bungee worked on before Halo or something, the game looks like absolute ass. Terrible, terrible, terrible, probably tranny made art direction "le so quirky 8 bit like world and enviroment", probably "capitalism bad" lore, payed batteplass to induce FOMO and my favorite thing to come out of this Concord clone is the whole "we don't know what to do about TOOOOOOXIC proximity chat", do you faggots even understand the concept of a mute button? Maybe the romaboos of the thread could help me but that phrase reminds me of the western roman emperor when the empire was buckling and crumbling on all sides, who in jest, said something like "roman soldiers aren't going to debase themselves by building forts and bridges", not knowing that during the time of Caesar that was probably one of the main reasons they could move around Gaul so easily and put the gauls on so many bad situations before they even went to battle.

I'm probably butchering the whole thing, but the idea is that its almost comical how a group of people can work so hard over many years to make something great, then life does what it usually does and those people drift off into their own thing and the people they hand their game to are so hopelessly incompetent, they even rail agaisnt things that made the game great in the first place, I mean, the insolence of these faggots. If it wasn't the terrrible art style, the idea these retards are so triggered by voice chat, again, one of the most fun things in the Halo games, tells me everything I want to know about this game and how you too should avoid it like the plague. We are fully in the "weak men create shitty games" time in gaming.

,
Was interested until I read that it wasn't free to play.
No way this is worth any amount of money when there are better f2p fps out there.
I completely agree, I was interested until I heard a battle pass you have to pay for and then an additional 40 bucks you have to pay for the game. If I get invited into the playtest, and enjoy what I play I might buy it.

Marathon, now that's OLD, before my time, never even knew about it until Halo. Never understood why they made it for mac. For the zoomers here macs were fuggin' dead in the 90's, a dead platform, if you had a mac back then you got the shit kicked out of you at school. And yet Bungie made the game for mac and didn't port it to PC until I-shit-you-not 2024. The sequel did get launched on windows, probably because if not Bungie was gonna go broke, but infinity was mac only again in 1997 when apple just almost went bankrupt, and after that Bungie started Halo on the mac too!. Frankly had Msft not bought them for the Xbox odds are Bungie would've remained one of those forgotten studios from the 90's nobody talks about anymore. Like they didn't even bother porting Marathon to the Saturn/PSX/N64 when Quake was selling big in those.

As for this game, I like the aesthetic of the buildings since we're talking the far future here and we have no idea how its gonna be, but the character design looks like dayglo tumblr vomit from 10 years ago, the female characters in particular are like some flat design anime cartoon from 20 years ago, don't know what they were thinking there. Wouldn't say its like concord tho, that one was way more generic, budget guardians of the galaxy looks despite the $600mil bill.

The in-game graphics sure are disappointing after seeing the trailer, its so flat and plain it looks like an early PS4 game. Guess they are targeting iGPU and steamdeck users?
The first Marathon, especially, was a labor of love that they put way, way too much effort into for what was essentially a Doom clone.
Oh totally, the amount of backstory its autistic in its scale, more so when you consider it was a small team and not an army of 4chinners who wrote it. The alien names are ridiculously 90's scifi sounding.
Will Bungie be able to do what CoD failed to do, by bringing the extraction shooter genre to the mainstream?
Helldivers already done that.
I want it to be good. But the tranny marks are all over this game.
I barely paid attention to that cinematic trailer they made, were there any pronouns and shit? or you mean because of the style alone?
Was interested until I read that it wasn't free to play.
Into the trash it goes then, AFAIK there's no campaign or story mode

That's sort of overdone in its own right.
Just play Ruiner homes.
Ruiner was gritty, but I wouldn't call the world worn or real. It feels like cyberpunk 2077, where everything is now metal and there's neon lights everywhere

This shot with the s'pht looks like a level from the OG Marathon I pretty sure, they will probably just shove random Marathon levels and call it a day.
I dont know how I feel about that, a remake would be good, but going through a match just to get to the level sounds stupid.

I gotta admit I kinda dig the "killer iPod" aesthetic but...Nowhere near enough to sell me with all the other problems the game has and just using the name of an old IP for something that has little in common with it besides being an FPS.

Feels like "We have Apex Legends at home".

Is what they showed in the trailer all there is? Just one game mode?
I forget where I read it (might be this thread) it's one game mode with 4 maps and around 6 classes? I forget, but it's a shockingly low amount of content for a full price AAA game.

One slop YouTuber mentioned a 400 million dollar budget, which I find hard to believe.

I just want cyberpunk in a world that feels worn and real, why is that so much to ask for these days?
I know the feel. Off topic, but this was part of the drive for my own game projects. "80s cyberpunk anime" wasn't cars driving into a wireframe sunset with a VHS filter. The synth soundtrack is the only part they seem to get right.
"Dredd, these games want the feel of 80s anime, not your autistic obsession with recreating it 1:1."
There's a huge difference between wanting Appleseed, GITS, Genocyber, and Tank Polce, and recreating hotline miami via that one wallpaper every hack YouTuber uses as a title card.

On topic. I think they should have stuck to the almost Aliens 80s sci-fi aesthetic the original Marathon had.

but it's a shockingly low amount of content for a full price AAA game
Apex legends launched as f2p with the same amount of content and then became billion dollar cashcow.
I don't know what they were thinking adding a toll fee when 99% of multiplayer games either launch as free titles
or become free to play as time goes on (CSGO, Overwatch and this summer Rainbow 6 Siege).
Marathon so far doesn't do anything genre defining to justify the price tag.
