LOS ANGELES—When director Christopher Landon introduced his new thriller, “Drop,” before its premiere at the Chinese Theater on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame, he had a warning for the packed auditorium.

“It’s really hard out there for an original movie,” he said, urging everyone who liked the Universal Pictures release to “scream it from the rooftops” and on social media.

“Drop” opened this weekend to an estimated $7.5 million domestically, one of two new movies based on fresh ideas that fizzled at the box office. The other was Disney’s “The Amateur,” a spy thriller adapted from a little-known 1981 book, which opened to an estimated $15 million.

After years of gripes from average moviegoers and Hollywood insiders alike about the seemingly nonstop barrage of sequels, spin offs and adaptations of comic books and toys, the film industry placed more bets on original ideas.

The results have been ugly.

Nearly every movie released by a major studio in the past year based on an original script or a little-known book has been a box-office disappointment. Before this weekend’s flops were Warner Bros. Discovery’s“Mickey 17” and “The Alto Knights,” Paramount’s “Novocaine,” Apple’s “Fly Me to the Moon,” Amazon’s “Red One,” and the independently financed “Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1” and “Megalopolis.”

Jason Blum, who produced “Drop” and built his company Blumhouse largely on original horror franchises, said audiences’ preference for known properties has made it harder to release original movies in theaters, “even though that’s where some of the most exciting and risky storytelling still lives.”

Need for advertising

Getting people into theaters more frequently is a priority for a movie industry still recovering from the pandemic. Box-office revenue in the first three months of this year in the U.S. and Canada was the lowest it has been, excluding the pandemic, since 1996.

t the CinemaCon industry convention in early April, theater owners said they welcome more original films, but only if they are backed by robust advertising campaigns. Building buzz for a new film in a media environment fractured between YouTube, TikTok, streaming and sports is tough, particularly when it is an unknown title.

“We’re opening films that have almost zero awareness,” said Bill Barstow, president of Main Street Theatres, a small Nebraska-based chain.

Many consumers are content to wait until an original motion picture is available to rent online a few weeks after its theatrical release or to stream on a service like Netflix in a few months.

‘Creating new franchises’

The only films succeeding in the current environment are those with built-in audiences, like “A Minecraft Movie,” which was released in early April and has grossed more than $280 million domestically. And these days, even franchises can be far from a sure thing. Long-running series such as Marvel and DC superheroes and live-action remakes of Disney animated classics are showing their age and proving unreliable at the box office.

Studios say they have little choice but to make more original movies they hope will buck the odds.

“Telling original stories and taking risks is the only path toward creating new global franchises,” Bill Damaschke, Warner Bros.’ head of animation, said at CinemaCon.

Some of the increase in original film releases is attributable to Amazon and Apple, which are building film businesses with few well-established franchises. One of the biggest bets on an original film from any company this year is Apple’s “F1,” a June release starring Brad Pitt as a race-car driver.

Amazon hyped 11 coming movies to exhibitors at CinemaCon, of which six were originals. Among traditional studios, Warner Bros. is taking the most risks on originals, with big budget films from directors Paul Thomas Anderson and Maggie Gyllenhaal.

Hollywood’s next original release comes Friday with Warner’s “Sinners,” a horror movie starring Michael B. Jordan. Next month even Marvel, home to Hollywood’s biggest franchises, is taking a gamble with “Thunderbolts,” about a super team brand new to all but the most devoted comic-book readers.

This makes me think of something I brought up with a friend recently
There is no new Jim Carrey or Jack Black amongst the zoomer actors, that Im aware of. No Adam Sandler or Chris Farley type, either
No funny goofy guys anymore. All the zoomer actors look either smug, scared or tired. None of them are too pretty or too ugly. Boring people that zoomers are meant to project onto

SNL fumbled hiring Shane Gillis because he's racist and that would have been their first funny hire in decades. The pipeline for funny guys has been broken by DEI same as the pipeline for other entertainment work like videogames etc. Talent is not prioritized.

Hollywood didn't just destroy itself, it destroyed the movie industry and even the craft of acting. Notice how they constantly complain about the audience, meanwhile word's gotten out they won't cast people in roles unless they have at least seven digits on a major social media platform. They literally don't know how to make basic cinema (The Hero's Journey or even just a basic "Die Hard @ [Insert Place Here]", for example), even the order of operations is breaking down. They don't know how to find real actors, they don't know how to find source material, they don't know how to tell stories.

How long before the very audience they've been desperately courting (and failing) turns on the concept of entertainment completely? All that money would be better used for DEI purposes, after all. The "modern audience" isn't interested in anything that doesn't give them immediate dopamine, so it's ragebait not entertainment they crave. The whole damn thing is beyond fucked.

I mean in leftist eyes racism against whites is okay but they couldnt even muster up a new Dave Chappelle -type because they chose to die on the 'chicks with dicks' hill
And why couldnt they get a new guy like Chris Rock or Eddie Murphy even
The Jordan and Peele homos went all serious with their media because everything is super serious today guys
No new Waynes brothers either
Just a bunch of faggots trained to rattle the sabers at anyone who doesnt toe party lines

Yeah. Reminds me of when they tried to force-meme Trevor Noah as a funny guy. I think that really speaks for itself. They couldn't even do DEI right, they failed to even find a goofy black guy. Just as the poster above said, the entire entertainment industry and all the crafts within it are pretty broken.

I will go to my grave saying that Trevor Noah was astroturfed by white cat ladies and faggots because he was their ideal coal-burning fantasy. The age, the accent, the "not too black" color. Lifting him up was a way for certain people to virtue-signal within their own industry. It was never about comedy.

Pajeet hands typed this.
Nah, Jeetwood is where it is at if you need your fix of toxic masculinity. Never mind the plot: just rub your fist raw watching some buffed bloke taking down a whole army, climaxing with two dudes beating the shit out of each other. It is a shame that CGI is also ruining Jeetwood actioners.

I genuinely think streaming services and the Covid lockdowns have made people way too comfy at home to care about going to the theatres anymore.

Also the fact that it's just more expensive now. While yes of course movies aren't as good as they used to be I don't think it even matters any more.

So it is a profound mystery that the TDS crowd, the crowd who purport to uphold the arts, causally namedrop auteurs, and think Parasite was the bestest film ever ("Eat the rich!!!!"), refuse to see this film.
its not, its that that population is a lot lower than people think. Mickey 17 made just as much money as Everything Everywhere All at Once, its just that the budget for Mickey 17 was so high that you needed to make it a film normies would watch for it to make money. I Saw the TV Glow had the same budget as an episode of The Office so even if fuck all people saw it outside of reddit mods, it still made money.

Even that new Michael B. Jordan film coming out from the director of Black Panther is said to probably flop because despite having 13% of the US population already saying they're planning on seeing the movie, the budget is too much for how much they're going to make from it.
I went to the movie theaters last week and just want to remind everyone that some of those snack combos are now priced near $50. Fifty. Fucking dollars for some popcorn and candy.
Regal at least lets you have those "unlimited fill up" buckets and drinks, plus AMC charges you regular price for larges so the damage isn't too much, most shit outside of the popcorn in the movie theater is old stock and they microwave it in the back. so you're a fool to buy it
and will until he's 30
last year?
Even their semi-old blood sucks. Raimi Malek? Good actor, can't salvage a bad script and type cast. Michael B Jordan? Also a typecast, black, not strong enough to really carry a movie on his own. Robert Pattinson? Absolutely insufferable prick. Ryan Gosling? Maybe can carry a movie but really isn't that strong. You have a lot of weak personalities that just can't get the job done.
you just seem like the type to point out flaws in everyone: Tom Cruise? no one likes your religion freak. 2000s George Clooney? too much of a libtard. 2000s Jim Carey? more like not funny

Someone who lives in LA or super liberal South California and has spent their entire lives in the film industry-has long since lost the ability to organically appeal to large audiences, except but for recognizable brands.
the fact that Minecraft was made by a weird Mormon husband and wife who make niche indie comedies should tell you how true that is, they let every lib try their hand at a minecraft movie, but it took two freaks from Utah to finally get a movie out.
Glenn Powell is the only one I think of.
he's a scientologist. they're keeping it underwraps but he's a scientologist, he converted right before Top Gun 2 started and thats why he went from a role with a handfull of lines to having his role expanded and then proceeded to get leads in shit.

you don't need to go to your grave, its true. Liz Winstead openly said it a decade ago, Jon Stewart's hands were tied picking a successor because technically it was Liz's show, she created the daily show back in the 90s and got that ESPN guy to host it, it was meant to be a parody of inside edition, hence the douchbag as a host. Jon turned it into what it became but he wasn't part of the pecking order.

Trevor Noah was always a terrible pick, first off he's way more conservative than people realize, if you watch his stand up or roasts from the south africa days he literally joked about how fun it would be to kill blacks protesting police violence, he didn't think himself part of the "niggers ruining society" part of the nation.

2nd off he just isn't that funny, he started as a presenter and will always be that, he sucks. He plays up his back story and went from a Jim Jeffries style offense comedian in his home country to a Jim Jeffries style, immigrant with something to say about this evil US culture. Its why outside of some DEI gig you don't see this fucker, he's not hanging out with other comedians or doing their podcasts, he's not at the stand up festivals, he's barely around.

They literally don't know how to make basic cinema (The Hero's Journey or even just a basic "Die Hard @ [Insert Place Here]", for example)
They still make "Die Hard @ [Insert Place Here]", they just come off as inferior versions (yes, the second one is from Bongland, but they're film industry is basically Hollywood's ugly half-sister).

As for the Hero's Journey, that's not coming back since white male protagonists must always be pathetic or brought to heel while non-white and female protagonists are perfect.

That's what I mean. They can't even make decent Die Hard rip-offs, two released (G20 and the Daisy Ridley one) this year cost exponentially more than they should, featuring two ladies who don't have action credibility. They don't know what they're doing. It was once a statement of hyperbole, but now it's literally true. They don't know how to write or create films as they once did. They don't believe in altruism, optimism, or escapism - and they don't understand some combination of those three is necessary for Hollywood (especially those beloved franchises they've been raping).

Edit: I'm too lazy to look up the Daisy Ridley one, so I'll just keep referring to it as such (I don't expect to discuss it much more).

They tried so hard to make Ben Stiller this archetype with all the comedies he was in but the idea that you are supposed to identify with a complete jackass who is willing to risk it all for a chance at a girl (Something about Mary, the Meet the Parents movies) is offensive. Ben Stiller always played a much better villain than a hero anyways.

Speaking of Hollywood and all their predictable slop, what is the latest movie that had a bonafide bad guy who was black, with a white male protagonist? And I don't mean the black guy who is bad only because the white man made him bad, but just an actual bad guy where the good guy happens to be a white? Because if they don't want to look like all the other movies there's a good place to start.

If they really only cared about money they could adapt Camp of the Saints tomorrow for like $50k and make sixty trillion dollars off it. But they don't of course. They care about making propaganda first and foremost. The worldview they want you to hold doesn't allow black people as villains.

Jim Carrey made an attempt to be taken seriously (again) by starring in a dark comedy series on Showtime produced by Michel Gondry, the director of Eternal Sunshine. However, hamming it up as Robotnik turned out to be far more lucrative, and he knew it was easy money in an otherwise struggling Hollywood market. Jack Black is way older and outside of Minecraft and his Tenacious D fans, he hasn't done too well. Adam Sander is coasting through his career by doing roles in stuff like Uncut Gems and Spaceman while producing and starring in dreck to promote his friends and daughters.

Seth Rogan also turned into a smug asshole that condemned his past comedy and friendships just to save face in Hollywood. Jonah Hill lost weight (good for him) and whatever comedic talent he had left since he fancies himself an artist now. The Jewish remake of Guess Who's Coming to Dinner wasn't funny. You can't be too edgy or "punch down" in comedy nowadays.

I don't remember the last time I saw a commercial for a movie unless it was for another Amazon or Netflix show before the main feature.
Fascinating, I didn't really think much about this at first, but - I wonder just how much damage Targeted Advertising has had on the shared culture. Just how much of the 70's through into the 00's was held together by the fact that undifferentiated advertising opportunities meant that most everyone was being introduced to the same products, the same media, the same entertainment content.

Now? Adblockers aside, I'll never really be shown the same stuff as my friends, because we have different advertiser profiles. Nobody is going to want to advertise movies or TV to me because I never really watch them anymore, but its just creating a self fulfilling prophecy at this point. Instead, I'll get a Crunchy ad because of Anime, but I might not even get advertised the same show as my other anime watching friends. I'll get book ads, or knife ads, or game ads, but all different from people who otherwise share those interests with me.

How much of our shared culture has been dismantled in an effort to minmax everyones individual exposure to goods?

He made Drive and Blade Runner 2049 is what he did, and in this house Ryan Gosling is a hero, end of story!
Blade Runner 2049 sucks and ruins the Replica Question by insinuating Decker is a Replica and implanted with "GOTTA FUCK RACHEL" cyber-genes in order for any of this story to work. Meaning Tyrell would've created a robot in the likeness of young niece for sole purpose of getting bent over and turned into a literal breeding machine. Ryan Gosling might've had a good performance and been the least of the problems with the movie, but that didn't stop the movie from sucking. All I can think of when the "Rebels" emerge from the shadows is them all doing the whistle from the Hunger Games at Ryan Gosling and telling him he's the Mockingjay.

Not to mention the fact Blade Runner is such a detailed, gritty and lived in world that genuinely looks like a future noir and yet a few years into the future, 2049 is an empty lifeless husk. It's a complete fucking ghost town by comparison. The movie is too clean and the sense of dirt that coming from an urban futuristic setting is just so uncanny it sucks me right out of the movie. It's so bland and generic it makes me want to roll my eyes in shame. It doesn't even look like Blade Runner anymore. It's a bad sequel through and through.

You pushed the "Blade Runner" Button. You shouldn't have done that.
