As has been said before, it sounds like a case of a dysfunctional family (though this can happen even with functional ones) and/or some other issue (maybe school-related?). Speaking as a Norferner... Broken homes are sadly a common occurrence around here, so it's a VERY LIKELY theory. As I said, everything sucks and it shows. Another factor is that yes, parents often are unaware of what their children actually are getting up to, especially online, even well-functioning families can fall into that trap. I can attest to this personally but I won't elaborate further because TMI.
I think in American terms, she'd be called Trailer Trash, just minus the trailer. No dad, single mom, men in and out of the house, bad part of town; when you're that age, the only real escape is doing dumb shit with the local neighborhood rowdies, or the Internet. She chose the latter.
Mostly right but the bad part of town would also be the local Paki ghetto, so you'd also add in a high chance of being threatened and/or gang-raped too. (That was part of the polices' reasoning for their non-action against Grooming Gangs in fact, the girls were all seen as white trash who were basically asking for it.) So the former option has its risks, it's much safer to go with the latter.
