TGWTG The Spoony One / Spoony / Noah Antwiler and Rachel Baker / @RaeAngel07 - The touching romance between a washed-up videogame reviewer throwing a decade-long pity party and his delusional Canuck stalker. #weaknotsick #donttellmehowtosulk

On the same note there's no way, in my mind, that Ken and Roberta Williams weren't swingers.
And I've always suspected the Two Guys really were from Andromeda.

Also I kinda find it funny that Sierra probably made the first computer game to have the word "porn" in the title (Softporn Adventure, which later became the basis for Leisure Suit Larry).

Speaking of Softporn Adventure!

Al Lowe made LSL because he thought the concept has a lot of potential, but Ken Williams despite being a top notch programmer couldn't write for shit. In his words: You read it and you know Ken's the type of guy who spends all his time in front of a computer.

I can't help but wonder if Spoony has heard of this (far superior) series and is sour about it.
If he has seen them it will only have steeled his resolve that he can never, ever come back.

There is no way he can match guys like Majuular or Mandalore for their level of production quality and autism, and he can't bullshit people anymore because there are a dozen other retrospectives out there to discredit whatever copes he makes to excuse him not knowing how to play the game.

Now that Majuular's series on Ultima has reached the two big dogs in the franchise its so apparent that no one is ever going back to watching Spoony's old vids on the subject except for era specific nostalgia reasons. I can't help but wonder if Spoony has heard of this (far superior) series and is sour about it.

That being said, if these get to 9 and dont make an indirect reference to those old videos I will be kind of disappointed I admit.

Not to sound like a massive contrarian, but there's no passion behind these videos, his delivery puts me to sleep and it all just sounds like someone reading off of a script.

I've been thinking about the comparison between the two sets of videos myself. It was a few years ago, but I did rewatch his Ultima videos on YouTube a while back. It was a fan edit that removes all the sketches and with all that bloat removed it's actually pretty watchable. The level of detail an Majuular's series blows those out of the water though and the fact that I don't really see myself comparing the two any time soon speaks to your point I guess. The only downside to his autistic level of detail is that I just don't have the time to sit down for several hours with these as much as I'd like and I have two videos in the series in my backlog as it is. Something for a rainy day, perhaps.

Do agree that it'd be interesting to learn if the guy has any opinion on Spoony's work at all, but if it's addressed it's best saved for a final part or perhaps some kind of addendum video. No reason to muddy the water by comparisons to other YouTube videos in the middle of things imo. In my head I can picture two possible outcomes though, and I don't know which is sadder: him seeing it as a kid and it inspiring him to get into the series and eventually blow Noah's stuff out of the water, or him never hearing about them because the guy hasn't exactly been in his prime for well over a decade at this point. 💀

He just has a calmer style of delivery in his videos which he usually presents more like documentaries. I think there's passion in the project and that it's evident based on just how much is in those videos with development lore and gameplay details being addressed in close detail. Perfectly fine if that isn't your thing, but I don't think they're passionless.

That's what I like about him tbh. I get the appeal of stuff like Spoony's classic content but I'm too old and tired to put up with performative outrage and strung out jokes. I just want the facts, delivered cleanly and clearly.

I started watching a video by some zoomer tuber a while ago, I think his name had Shift in it, about speedrunning glitches and he kept interrupting the topic every five seconds to insert annoying forced jokes. It was so frustrating I had to turn the video off.

I couldn't disagree more but I’m also prepared for Majuular to start having horrible takes about games I know better. Like Spoony with Ultima Underworld 2. I expect Majuular’s review of that will make Spoony’s fraud apparent (he was probably not actually playing the games he reviewed after he got big).

Admittedly Spoony’s Ultima reviews were already redundant to anyone who didn’t just want Spoony because of Finntrovert. Finn talks more about the games and even reuses some of Spoony’s own opinions to reduce his carbon footprint.

I’m a console gamer, so I have no dog in this fight. That said, PC gamers were absolutely feral for content. Thought I’d try Ultima VII for fun. Made it just outside Trinsic and immediately got paralyzed by the sheer number of options. Quests everywhere. No compass. No hand-holding.

Counterpoint: Spoony's shrill voice was one of the reasons I couldn't get into him fully. When he was in full whinge-mode it was annoying as fuck to listen to. I'm super glad the 'ranter' YouTuber archetype is seen as antiquated now.

What are some of Majuular's bad takes? I don't think I've played any of the games he's made videos on so I generally take him at his word.

You and me both. Nostalgia Critic was always the most egregious one for me, even when I was much younger there was nothing funny about a grown man literally shrieking over inconsistencies in a kids movie.

I don't even particularly like when Rich Evans (peace be upon him) does it when he's recapping a movie, but those meltdowns are pretty rare as opposed to being the core of his schtick. Plus, at least early on, I think Rich's rants were genuine, whereas it's so obvious Doug is doing a bit which makes it even more annoying.

The only thing I remember about Spoony's Ultima retrospective is his meltdown over "What's a paladin?"
He was so upset by that line, spitting on the deep lore and the legacy of that one dude from 5 games ago. It was just an exposition dump for new players.

Nothing yet but he’s referenced well-known games in a way that invites suspicion from me. It could be nothing, arguably minor inaccuracies or off-the-cuff misstatements, but it’s like the bad take equivalent of dog whistling because the discourse around those games isn’t new. And in some cases it’s the line that separates a good analysis from a retarded one.

Not the worst line ever written, but the way he says it, you’d think he just fell off a turnip truck with a mouthful of hay. The whole reboot thing is weird, because the Avatar has allegedly been to Britannia nine times already?

And for the record, nobody likes reboots.

MK1 got a hall pass because Liu Kang’s timeline is at least badass, but it still wastes everyone's time by expecting you to know everything from the old timeline that doesn’t technically exist anymore.

Spoony's take is justified, albeit exaggerated for comedic effect. There's a lot of horrible exposition in fiction, but this is one of the worst examples. In context, it's as bad as having Dr. McCoy ask, "What is Starfleet?" Worse, because 'Paladin' is a word anyone literate in English would know, and Ultima uses it correctly.
I think it says a lot that even modern Star Trek has never had a line as inane as "What's a paladin?"

Get ready for a great game! I have it installed on my Vita and Pixel phone. Shit never gets old. There's also a huge easter egg in the first town if you stack the crates up and walk behind a certain fireplace on the roof.
