Apparently the smarks hated last night but I don't care, it was good for me.
Gunther and Jay's match was a low point but still servicable. Any match Jay gets through without a big botch is a victory, this feud has run its course and badly needed to end on a relative high point, this served that purpose. Gunther tapping out in the end works with how chickenshit he has acted in the past few weeks, my quibble with how quickly he tapped out is minor and if they go on to explore Gunther's shift from a beat-you-in-the-ring wrestling heel to a backstabber, I won't care. Uso will always get yeeted no matter what he does and putting a belt on him was a natural choice for that, IWC losers can't stand it but they aren't tastemakers and booking for them is a dead end for business.
Tiffany vs Charlotte was easily the lowest point in the show for me. I've enjoyed Tif in the past but she has bad in-ring flow with Charlotte, who looks like a melted plastic bag and has never looked more awkward in action. Thin blond bimbos have already been a tired look for decades, and I like how Tiffy is a bit of a parody of that, but when you put her across from the blond bimbo played straight without leaning on the parody, it damages the appeal to me. The fact that Charlotte has consistantly been a dead fish on promos has not helped. This works for me because Charlotte is dogshit and she doesn't deserve the belt even if people hate her and wabt to boo her, but still, yawn.
LA Knight and Fatu I was fine with, Knight is almost always entertaining and didn't need to keep the title to stay over, Fatu is the most convincing monster they've had in a long time and should stay as such. Having him with a belt and forcing people to overcome him is a natural decision. They're both fun to watch in the ring, no real complaints.
New Day going over is the one finish I maybe don't really like, but not because I actually care about any of these people, I just wanted to see those fruity niggas get demolished. The tag team division is an absolute wasteland and the New Day feel just as stale as they were before the heel turn, but Erik and Ivar are very physically impressive and there were some pretty gnarly bumps in this match so I guess I'm fine with the asskicking delivered, I just kinda wish it went the other way.
Jade and Naomi I expected to be a make-a-sandwich match at least in terms of work, but surprisingly it was very good. The Jade-Naomi-Bianca story has some good buildup and emotion to it, and it was very satisfying to see things click with Jade and hiding her limitations behind the look and the raw strength. If she keeps learning I'll be a big fan.
The main event was probably my favorite finish of the night, if only for making Rollins do something fucking interesting for the first time in a million years. I'll hold off on glazing his part in it too hard until I see that he's gonna follow through and not just go back to dumb outfits and meandering incoherent promos while never doing anything. The work was pretty great, even if Punk still visibly gasses out in these matches. It fits the grizzled underdog thing he does now, we all know he's old and tired and broken down by now.
I find that my opinions on these big promos can change on second watching, but my first impression was pretty good. They saved a lot of the most heavily built up stuff for night two, IWC dweebs shitter-shattered over nothing as usual.
