Thread to share and discuss long-form video game critiques and their creators.
Their quality doesn't matter, they can vary from actually insightful and clever to 8h gay plot summary slop, as long as they are vidya related they are welcome here.

I'll start with some recommendations, be warned this op will be very autistic:

Matthewmatosis:
My favorite critic and in my opinion the best one. His videos usually fall on the shorter spectrum, as they are rarely longer than 1 hour.
The only longer videos of his are his "Commentaries" which are more like a "let's play" of the entire game, where he talks about pretty much everything regarding the game. He made commentaries on Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, Devil May Cry and Viewtiful Joe.
He is infamous for saying that Bioshock Infinite should have had the word "nigger". He kickstarted the hate on Dark Souls 2, and his critique of modern Souls slop predicted the direction From Soft would take with Elden Ring.
He is mostly retired from youtube, as he is developing a puzzle game now.
His GoW 2018 review is probably one of his best videos and a good place to to start:

Joseph Anderson:
Probably the most popular youtuber game critic, and one of the most influential.
His criticism on Elden Ring's boss designs sparked strong debate in the souls community.
He is famous for taking over 5 years to make his Witcher 3 video (still incomplete at the making of this thread), and infamous for his complete lack of understanding of Silent Hill 2's plot ("the town made him stupid").
He also got involved in some drama for saying SOMA is not a horror game, and in response he made a video "Why Horror Games Don't Scare Me", which led to EFAP faggots having a 3h stream talking about it. In fact, Mauler is notoriously a JA hater.
His 4h video on Witcher 1 is probably a good place to start:

PatricianTV:
He is the epitome of these long-form video game critiques, not in the sense that his videos are good, quite the contrary, but in the sense that his videos are the longest fucking shit ever. Great for background noise.
He is famous for his 8 hours Quick Retrospective of Morrowind, his 12 hours Quick Retrospective of Oblivion and his 20 hours Quick Retrospective of Skyrim.
He does normal length reviews, like his Avowed review, but those are not as popular, nor as interesting.
Personally I don't think he is a good critic, but his long videos are so insane and so well researched it's hard not to appreciate them in some way.
Like his Starfield video, that had a bunch of research to back up his main thesis that the game was a mess because Bethesda doesn't have a design document:

NeverKnowsBest:
He has some great retrospective videos:
The Entire History of Video Games, The Entire History of RPGs, The History of MMOs, The Entire History of Japanese RPGs, Final Fantasy - An Entire Series Retrospective.
He also does reviews. He did a pretty good Baldur's Gate 3 review, and an Elden Ring review.
However he also dabbles on politics faggotry from time to time, in which he has some gay centrist libertarian takes. He did a pretty bad video on "Gamer Gate 2" for example.
He also did a bad video defending Emil Pagliarulo (Bethesda's main writer) where he talked shit about Patrician TV (who then went to EFAP to criticize him and call him a cuck).
My favorite video of his is his Genshin Impact critique, which nails what makes the game so good but also so fucking bad:

Noah Caldwell-Gervais:
He is a leftist faggot and a huge casual, he will say some of the dumbest shit you will ever hear, but at the same time I think he is a pretty good script-writer and he does have good plot, lore and theme analysis.
His videos on Souls games are actually interesting in the sense that it's fun to see the perspective of someone who is so fucking bad at them.
He has a bunch of long retrospectives, I haven't seem most of them, however I did really enjoy the one on the Diablo series:

And some more I don't have that much to say:
Raycevick: He mostly just review shooters and racing games, and mostly focuses on forgettable 7th gen games. But even though I don't care about most games he covers, his videos are incredibly well made and engaging.
TheGamingBritShow: He does the occasional long-form review, but most of his videos are actually just short recommendations or takes. I find his takes quite good.
Whitelight: I unironically hate this guy's video, I have never heard him say something of value and half the videos on his channel seem to be about ubisoft tier slop. But he is one of the most popular I've seen.
Hbomberguy: An actual lolcow tranny loving faggot sexpest with a his own thread that talks more about politic shit or youtube drama. But he has a handful of dogshit videos on games which are probably some of the most viewed long-form vidya critiques on youtube.
Mandalore: On the shorter side, he mostly covers older cult classic games, some eurojank type shit. His videos are more summary style, but they are entertaining. I also believe he was involved in some tranny drama (siding with the tranny), but I don't have a single source to back that up.

And I'm sure there are others I'm forgetting or that I don't even know exists.

Do YOU have a favorite video or video creator? Do you even pay attention to these video when you leave then on the second monitor for background noise?
Discuss.

I sure do love me a wikipedia details/plot&game summary audiobook;). Of the few I'd actually recommend is BoulderPunch, if only for covering actually niche games
I would also vouch for Raycevik , his video on the absolute state of racing games is a highlight in particular
My nominee for one of the worst is turbokike Jacob Geller, though there are too many for me to list them all (pastra if you want a horror-slop glazer, Super Eyepatch Wolf if you want an annoying mick, etc.). At least all of the aforementioned here and above can be described as somewhat distinctive in their voice/content, but there's also a trash heap of channels who create sporadic, bland videos that don't even rise to the level of eliciting like or dislike - equivalent to those A.I. generated articles that exist to game google for a modicum of ad revenue.

Some nostalgia related video essays
redlyne is a cool zoomie, rye games too but he never adds a number to his "exploring dead games" videos.
but overall i just watch around shit that youtube randomly toss on my feed and i haven't seen anything beyond 1 hour related to gaming yet.
I would also vouch for Raycevik
i saw one of his videos on the NFSes but i got another guy recommended about nfs essays, when looking around i got both ultraviolet and mitchell diedritch however they might not fit the 1 hour thingy but they are good essays, and since hbomber was mentioned might as well pull StopSkeletonsFromFighting since his zeebo videos are top tier shit, it was a clusterfuck of a console to be sold in here and i always laugh whenever i see videos about people from outside of brazil falling in that rabbithole, fastminer07's video on NFS art is good too because he glazes NFS heat and heat is a really fucking good looking nfs with the best garage loading screen in the history of NFS.

I liked their old videos and watched some of their streams, they were entertaining.
There's a channel that I often have in the background called Retropals (and Retropals Archives where they dump the rest of their streams). I really like it despite one of them being a tranny(MtF), but you can just pretend it's a fat lady that have smoked way too many cigarettes. They're woke and came out of SA but despite that they're very tolerable and can laugh at ridiculous fan service.

This is a two hour video of Data Easts pool games and it was fascinating. Didn't think there would be much to it.

They also have a stellar video series on BS Zelda for the SNES with lots of info about the cult/sect connections, it was also the channel where I learned about Nintendos early erotic light gun game. Think Mad Dog McCree except all the video footage is produced by Nintendo, I think Gunpei Yokoi was involved, and the game is all about shooting the clothes off of scandinavian ladies.

I've been listening to Zeltik who covers Legend of Zelda lore and stories. His videos tend to be around 15 minutes to half hour range but some go longer. He's got a few playlists I'll have on in the background and lose a few hours while working. Then there's EpicNate that covers Elder Scrolls and Fallout mysteries and icebergs. Many of his videos go on for an hour or more. He's recently been branching out to cover real life history that has been interesting. At least from listening passively...I haven't felt the need to fact check it because I don't really care. Those two are my go to when I've run out of podcasts or news to listen to and I really want something to break up the mundanity of the day.

Majuular (KF thread)
I had only watched his King's Field and Ultima: Underworld videos before the thread went up but I've since gotten up to date on his Ultima series and highly recommend it. The King's Field video was so good that it prompted me to play King's Field 4. I'd really like to see him dive into the history of specific studios as I personally enjoyed those parts of his videos the most.

(JA) infamous for his complete lack of understanding of Silent Hill 2's plot ("the town made him stupid").
What destroyed his reputation for me was his silent hill and horror videos. In his video about how horror games aren't scary, the full playthrough in on his stream archive channel. In short, he's stopping every 5 minutes to talk to chat, thank donations, etc. It's become my go-to example whenever gen z says "classichorror game X isn't scary", because they play it during the day, on stream, with friends and chat taking the piss out of it.

I would also vouch for Raycevik , his video on the absolute state of racing games is a highlight in particular
Raycevik I don't like. Typical left wing pseudo intellectual. However, his racing game video you posted is 10/10.

Mandalore: On the shorter side, he mostly covers older cult classic games, some eurojank type shit. His videos are more summary style, but they are entertaining. I also believe he was involved in some tranny drama (siding with the tranny), but I don't have a single source to back that up.
It's on KF somewhere, but the short version from memory. Someone made a false rape allegation, which Mandilore promoted as true, until he got enough blowback that he folded.

My issue is less with Mandalore, and more his fanbase. Every game he mentions becomes a meme as his fanbase runs it into the ground.

Two defunct channels I'd recommend.

Examined Life of Gaming did in depth reviews of old shooters. They're only 20-30 minutes each, but the games are often short. In a way he was like Gmanlives meets AVGN. He nuked his channel of old content a while ago however. His video of Secret Service was classic.

Another channel that talked about obscure games was "Do you like video games", stylised "Do you lyke teh vidya gaems" or something. This creates a massive problem because now his videos are impossible to find, as the term just brings up a bunch of slop. I don't know if he still exists or not. If anyone finds his channel, let me know.

What, no love for Ross's Game Dungeon?

Ross's Game Dungeon sees Ross Scott of the Accursed Farms (of Freeman's Mind fame) reviewing random games he digs up that he finds interesting. It could be some random shooter from the 90's, a point-and-click adventure game, or some RPG Maker game he found on Steam. Often he'll go on random tangents about things he likes or dislikes about games or the industry in general, and ever since the Quarantine episode, he'll even give the games "Awards," which are things that stood out to him personally.

Here's a sample of what he does.

Been listing to a 16 hours Resident Evil 4 Remake Retrospective.

Would like it more if his voice was not so whiny and has a clear biases towards the original version.

OrangE made a few good videos about Don't Starve's lore, the one hit wonder about Bloons franchise's story and a plethora of smaller videos about a few indie games. Not just great for BG listening, but are well edited visually as well. Very thorough in his research and actively digs around on his own instead of only relying on existing information.

slasher432 usually makes shitposty videos on Don't Starve, but he also crafted a bunch of autistically in-depth theories about Don't Starve's worldbuilding. 7 theory videos in total.

There's this small channel I enjoy, generally does videos around an hour or shorter on a wide variety of games. Erumore
Also never brings up politics as far as I can tell.

Care to elaborate? I haven't kept up with Joe in years, but this sounds insane.
Recently on a stream Joe disclosed that he was divorcing his wife and he would start living alone, leaving his house to his wife and 4 (still very young) kids.
He said that the reason for his divorce is the same reason why he couldn't work on the Witcher 3 video, but he didn't elaborate on it.
Around the same time he announced he was e-dating one of his twitch/discord mods, but she seems like a true and honest woman.
The troon grooming is probably just his speculation as Joe's discord is filled with troons, like most discord servers tbh.
