What in the world is the point of all these different factions and chapters and successors that have fuck all info on them beyond like a single sentence like "fought in the battle of Dickshit McCunt Punter in the Smegmentum Foreskinia. Colors are quartered brown and orange. Heraldry/Insignia unknown"?

Is this shit for homebrew purposes for people too lazy to come up with a name and color scheme themselves, a retarded attempt at fluff to make the verse feel larger without having to actually come up with anything, both?
Basically just as a starting point for homebrew yes.

An attempt to make the world seem a bit larger. When writing up the battle of Dickshit McCunt Punter in the Smegmentum Foreskinia, the universe would be terribly small if it were just the Ultramarines every time and it's not exactly difficult to come up with a quick name and scheme.
Failing to do this and having the same handful of major characters involved in every incident is one of the problems with modern fluff.

It's also a starting point for homebrew if you do happen to be inspired by any of the throwaways.

What the others said.

Some of them are also homebrew armies of various people of note. I want to say there were some white dwarf staff that had homebrew chapters that are semi canon? I remember a contest for people to invent a chapter, and GW would pick their favourite to be made canon. I think the result was Legion of the Damned, which iirc even had their own minis as a result?

Not to be a broken record, but there was a bigger focus on this back in the day. 1000 chapters of 1000 marines. Early starter sets used to feature black templars, crimson fists, dark angels, blood angels, and other chapters and sub-factions. The stars of Dawn of War were Blood Ravens. Not like today where the Ultramarines do everything. And back in the day, this was a few pages of a codex. Some example paint schemes and lore ideas for how to make "your guys". Now in the age of fan wikis, everything has to be catalogued and memorized.
"Oh, you never heard of the Obscurum Kiwis Chapter? Get the fuck out tourist!"

It's not just Space Marines. There used to be many guard legions but now everything is Cadia and Krieg. Mordian, Catachan, Vostroyan, Praetorian. Steel Legion being semi-retconned out of Armageddon to make room for more Krieg is considered to be a betrayal in part because of this.

Plus it's just fun. There are some neat ideas that are fun to play around with.

Political fence sitters is what they are. Can't trust them.
You have no idea how happy I was that when I got back in touch with a high school friend, that he’d become a disciple of Tzeentch and a son of Magnus.

I literally just need a Khorne bro and between me and my group, we will each have a force dedicated to one of the Four.

I wouldn't really call it laziness, its more inspirational. I'm all for "your guys" but there is a lot of Shadow The Hedgehog tier stuff out there. Sometimes its nice to pick out something that only has a couple of paragraphs in one of the books and expand on that.

At least Space Wolves have successor chapters now, so you can make them look like something from a Heilung video rather than Thundercats.

So long as it stays at a couple of paragraphs I'm good with them introducing new chapters etc.

10th edition at least for space marines handles this better than a couple of other previous editions. The codex shows plenty of examples of successor chapters, unknown lineage, and basically does everything but tell you to just make up your own shit. Additionally the detachments in 10th no longer having chapter names associated with them shut up some of the autists that would give people flak for having painted their ultramarines green, or their salamanders red and black because they like fiery colors but didn't use the "successor chapter" bullshit rules and restrictions from something like 9th that just locked you out of shit.

With the codex iconography page acting as a template for those able to understand that.

The guard implementation they managed to shit the bed with instead of using detachments as regiment templates, decided to apply weird restrictions to which units could use 1 of 3 sets of rules, which doesn't suit the people running a million old models(it's GW of course they don't care about that) or people willing to proxy new models(again, GW has no reason to care) but at least allow some kitbashing and alt color schemes without leaving an opponent wondering which unit of guardsmen on the table is krieg/catachan/cadian because it's not army-wide for some reason.

But back to the "space marines" and "my dudes" a lot of this went out the window between 5th and only very recently thanks to obnoxious assholes trying to be pedantic about which shade of green got used on a model.

... We're gonna have to theorycraft /ourguys/: The Obscurum Kiwis, aren't we? Or maybe a slightly different name than "Kiwis." I can emboss a Cartoon Kiwi on shoulderpads. What color? Green and Brown?

This actually really works well, too. Like there's a CSM chapter that just has an offhand description -- they're sealed in their armor and black ichor leaks from every rivet and seam, but no one knows what they look like inside. (Of course, White Dwarf fucked that up by showing one without a helmet a few months later, but whatever). There's also an interesting Nurgle chapter that's devoted to killing everything, not plague. Which kinda seems like an anti-life sorta deal, not usually Nurgle's thing. Then you have the next step up, like Blood Ravens or the Sons of Malice.

I love the obscure chaos warbands. Like those Slaaneshi cannibals who just wear white and their daemon world is a giant obese man.

Grey/Green like the default forum theme?

Obscurum Kiwis
- Mid-dark grey base (mechanicus standard grey? Eshin Grey at a stretch)
- green trim (warpstone glow? Maaaaybe Caliban green)
- kiwi on shoulder pad (from website, using a full bird doesnt work imo) in a brighter green (moot green?)
- TND on bolters
- TTD on the flamers, other side has YWNBAW
- purity seal has the TND copypasta

Feeder as Warlord with that cheeky smile

Death Guard, World Eaters, Emperor’s Children boxes…

Night Lords and Iron Warriors forgotten.
NL got their own KT/Infantry Unit. Just play Heresy, where the only thing forgotten is basic infantry units. And armor marks. And the Deredeo shield. And a Salamanders HQ. And more units for Solar Aux and Mechanicum. And updates to the older resin kits ( just look at WE special units). And Castra Ferrum Dreadnaughts. And two legions. And a proper Daemon army. And original Dark Mechanicum units (that aren't gay ass Legion Imperialis. And...

Can our Librarians wear yellow? Only they can see the ebbs and flow of the dimensional merge. If you are looking for colors for weapons casings, the black armies tend to go for a dark red.

However, RG and IH like to get special with their casings, but that's more for people to differentiate the two.

The gray you are looking for however is probably closer to Space Wolves from 30k. Is this close to what you want:

How about the join date colors for the shoulder pad trim?

Shouldn't we be loyalist since we're constantly under siege by heretics that have had their bodies and minds twisted by the Chaos Gods in the hopes of achieving their selfish desires?
idk what you're talking about we're loyal to the God Emperor. total chaosnigger death

“Some things are better left unknown”

Plus the Emperor was a redditor, faith is inseparable from man. I think some drawfag could mix the Tzeentch symbol with the kiwi symbol into something glorious for the warband.
