It's due to how fructose is metabolized as compared to say glucose. Fructose can only be metabolized in your liver and said process is very similar to how alcohol is processed, so much so that non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is a huge issue now relative to prior decades. There are other knock on effects due to fructose only being able to be processed in the liver in terms of hormone signaling as well which leads to more fat deposition in your body, leads to issues with cholesterol(dyslipidemia), etc. With fruit you generally have alot of fiber to off set the fructose in terms of rate and concentration, but the HF in HFCS is increasing the concentration alot and there's usually no fiber to off set it.
