The old non lithium-ion batteries didn't have any power regulation, so they can easily overcharge. That's the main reason you shouldn't keep them plugged in all the time. As for all the hysteria about gaming laptops and battery life just turn off the dgpu and put it in power saving and you'll get 7+hours doing web browsing and watching videos.. I have a g14 and this is pretty much true for me. These amd laptop cpus from 2022 and up are very good for battery life

I literally do this. I get 2 hours using a web browser and half that if I actually do anything, or if the browser is actually doing anything other than reading hate speech on Kiwi Farms Dot Net. I have an ASUS TUF A15.

ASUS is the most niggeryist brand of hardware to ever NIG. Old router i had sucked, old laptop had a shit wifi chip, had a shit moba- i fucking hate ASUS and the chinks that put them together. Zero quality control.

My IdeaPad doesn't even have a dGPU, and it still can only just about manage four hours. It's not just "lol gaming laptops", this is a very uninspiring office-style laptop.
 
Is it just me, or are all the new laptops and their hinges designed to be flimsy? I don't mean made of cheap piece of shit plastic, that's been the industry standard since 2013-2015ish, but I mean the frame itself and the hiinges are weak. I was thinking of replacing my old beatup laptop that went through a lot of punishment and every computer I've seen seems to have thinner screen hinges than it, MSI being the chief culprit. Part of me wants to say it's greed by shaving off the total components needed, other part of me wants to assume it's a coordinated effort towards planned obsolescence a la Apple.

I guess its a case by case I've heard linux is better with battery life. A lot of the default apps asus installs are big battery drainers. If you still hacve that laptops id reccomend getting rid of them. The one thing i will give mac guys is that there is no bullshit when you buy a macbook.

Asus laptops are just mediocre out of the box .I got mine because of reviews and in 5 months i had to replace the liquid metal because it was over heating when i played elden ring on it. i had to use the ptm7950 stuff just to get decent temps.

Specific manufacturers, models, sizes could be to blame. Anything that wants to be an "ultrabook" could be a problem. Tiny "netbooks" might last longer, and they probably won't overheat from using low power chips and no dGPU. Try my strategy mentioned above of not spending a lot on a laptop, since you'd either get something not trying to be an ultrabook, or you won't care that much when the cheap thing dies. You also want to read the harsh reviews.

Want something that will probably last longer, can be repaired, has a removable battery, etc.? You'll have to pay more for it:

Consumer laptops tend to be built flimsily and cheaply, while business laptops are more solid. There's a reason ThinkPads are constantly recommended, both used and new. Even though there's barely anything left from the IBM era in terms of functionality and design, current Lenovo ThinkPads are still way better built than consumer models (as long as you avoid the E series, the only one with plastic hinges), and since they usually get leased by large companies, they land on the used market for a good price 5 years down the line. Obviously you won't be doing any major gaming on them, but for work and light gaming they're good enough.

I generally look up the DIY screen replacement guides for laptops to see what the hinges look like. Some are disgustingly flimsy

I know there have been some questions relating to flight sticks in this thread. Do any of you know about wheels, pedals and shifters for racing games?

I'm reasonably adept at flight sim stuff but really want to build a better racing setup. And my research so far into racing wheels and pedals and all that stuff leads me with results like Thrustmaster and Logitech. Their reputation in the flight sim community is "okay", but generally their stuff is considered entry-level or way overpriced and low quality. So what are the weird, lesser-known brands of racing wheels and that sort of stuff? Price isn't a huge concern but obviously I want something of good quality.

All I know is the Madcatz wheel for the Gamecube is a piece of crap.

Again, Acer Predator Helios 18", 2 years of use at work and at home with 2 kids constantly trying to fuck with it, falling off the couch, opening and closing it 30 times in a row, etc....hinges are still tight and act like brand new.

Quality really does depend "by model", so it sucks if you just happen to pick a shit one.

FWIW before having kids that dictate when I can sneak off to my pc, and before getting a job with lots of downtime I was a laptop hater. Still would be if it wasn't for this specific scenario.

can't recommend specific brands, but as something that will be used and abused like an office chair, I wouldn't cheap out.
luckily the sim community is autistic as fuck (and not big enough to shill), so looking in the right places should net some good recommendations.
