Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves

I'm old enough to have been in my very late teens when I first encountered Street Fighter 2 in a bowling alley in the summer of 92. While SF 2 and most other fighting games became MP juggernauts, those games, especially SNK games, were made as much for solo play as for versus play. I've always been content to play solo, but if I play versus, I can't really enjoy it unless there's someone in the same room for banter/shittalk.
@ShitLurker For now, solo play consists of an arcade mode, a story mode (kind of grindy, but there's alot of solo fighting to be had. And some gimmick solo modes (survivor etc.) It's more than plenty for me ymmv.
That makes you older than me by perhaps a decade.
But yeah, 90% of the 2p fun was being in the same room shoulder to shoulder with the other guy.
I love 1P story mode just as much as i love in the same room 2PVs.
Online vs is ok, but it's no where near the same.

Good ole days of being in the same room shit talking your opponent versus facing a forigner with lag call u sarrrrrr.

The only game worth playing from SNK was KOF13, anything after that is garbage.
Why people cocksuck KOF13 so much? I understand can cocksucking KOF98, because I'm brazilian and everyoen and their mother played that game. But 13? That game was shit and slow as fuck.

These days my fighting game pvp comes against my adult kids, which thankfully, I see often. Their shittalk is brutal and hilarious, lol. I'm very proud of them.

It's like those critically acclaimed novels or movies that you know are great because everyone else said so. Name dropping it, therefore, makes you appear smarter than everyone else.

The newer SNK games are actually fun, fucked up only by online. The 2019 Samurai Shodown is actually a thing of beauty, while the most recent King of Fighters is actually very fun with a lot of room for combo experimentation.

This game looks fun too, although I'm not sold on the graphics or the fact that the DLCs seem to be replicates of existing roster. Why Andy when Hokutomaru is already here, why Joe when Preecha is already here, and why the fuck are people that will never buy or play the game anyway demanding that Kim Kaphwan be in when his sons - including one that is a complete replica of him - are already in the game. Didn't play the beta, but I may give the game a whirl when I hear that online isn't that fucked up (knowing SNK, sadly, they'd likely fuck that up).

Because Hokutomaru isn't Andy.

Preecha isn't Joe.

I don't know about you or anyone else but these characters are more than a collection of moves to me.

They are a personality, a story.

They make up parts of the stitched in fabric of the games universe.

Andy & Joe have been there from day one, literally decades ago.

They are just as much Fatal Fury as any other character.

Unlike Capcom SNK recognizes this.

Zeku and Kimberly are perfect examples of this.

We don't want the master, we don't want the protege.

We wanted Guy.

I like Hokutomaru and if he continues to be included in future games I'm sure he'll become even better... But he will never be Andy Bogard.

A bit surprised about the player numbers on Steam. I do hope it's going to be a lot more Saturday, Sunday. Or this is completely skewed towards the console players ?

That's just how SNK games are. And by extension, any fighting game that isn't MK/SF/Tekken.

Not sure how reliable steam numbers are to an overall base of players... their message board is the absolute shits however, lol. I've never seen such concentrated negativity anywhere else on the internet.

Besides console gamers, you may have a lot of SNK newbies hopping aboard, and they may be playing mostly single player to get the hang of the fighting system before wading into online.

Sure, it doesn't have the brand recognition like Street Fighter, for example, but the numbers don't lie. It's doing awful numbers on Steam.

Not sure how the discussion board relates to the player base. And people are ingame, doesn't matter if they are in ranked, EOST or whatever, we have player numbers. And the numbers on Steam are atrocious. Just for comparison:

It's the launch weekend. Unless it starts going up today, Sunday and in general, this is just bad. All the marketing, both guest characters, that fucking prize money. It's a new fighting game, the first days are where most people will play the game. The only recent example I can think of is SF6 which almost broke launch numbers on Steam a year after launch.

For argument’s sake, it's double the numbers. And that's years ago and without all the crazy stuff attached.

Some anime fighter. Yes it's ArcSys and a different niche, but again launch numbers are telling compared to CotW.

I like the game and hope it is a success and gets plenty of support, but I fail to see how that can be counted as a good launch and I would be surprised with SNK and the Saudis are happy with the performance. Unless it's doing crazy numbers on console.

I don't really know what the steam numbers mean towards the overall success of any game, but I'll take your word that it's a reliable barometer. The comment about the message board was just an aside.

I hope it does well also, if for no other reason than for SNK to see at least the promised first 3 seasons through. I do wonder if the inclusion of Ronaldo and Ganacci put some potential buyers off.

All good, I also didn't wanted to sound dismissive of your argument. But the forums on steam are only used by a few users compared to the general playerbase, and importantly, you don't need to own the game to post on the game's community discussion. The Steam forums in general are a cesspool of unmoderated garbage, but I wouldn't correlate that in regard to a game's success or failure.

People ingame is a good metric compared to the potential ownership of the game on Steam. Especially during the launch window.

And I would argue that CotW is doing badly when the "early access" period had more total players in total ingame compared to the official launch, in addition to a weekend where people can play more and longer.

I personally wouldn't believe that Rolando was detrimental to the game, that is a point I think is more parroted around resetEra, but something is off. The marketing didn't pay off, and that money probably would have been better spent enhancing the game. Most likely it is a combination of a dormant franchise, €60 price tag coupled with a perceived bad value proposition compare to something like SF6, middling presentation and other quirks. I see and feel the difference while playing, but a casual player might think this is a worse Street Fighter.

Salvatore went from haha funny to the most busted matchup i've experienced in a while. Far HP, jump HP and jump HK is all he needs and counterplay is literally just DP, highcrush and sweep. Bro just melts on defense, but ffffffffuuuuuuck...
Nice game, Terry is fun as fuck.

Started to run into people with double or triple the amount of points in ranked, which is unfortunate.
I am getting washed, it's not fun. Was hoping that the damage overall would be lower, but it's too high, and the combos are already optimized. Just defense is not optional and seems to be mandatory. Tizoc feels just bad to play with no armored moves, shit range on his command grabs and awkward anti airs among other things. I need a break from the game already, this turned sours really fast for me.

Just like the first game! 😁

Seriously though, that sucks. He's my main in MotW, and not being able to tick throw 100% of the time was my #1 frustration with that game, not helped by the fact that it was glitched to begin with.

If you had a competent writer and Kim wasn't a DEI/ESG-checkmark, the passing of the torch could have worked. Again, you need a competent writer working on a game that isn't woke slop like Blackrock Fighter 6.
