Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves

The soccer guy and dj really deflated my already moderate hype tbh

If I get a Switch 2, and if it's ever released for it, then I'll take a look again.

I preordered this, after some back and forth in my head about it (please make the voices go away). Being an old fart gamer who used to frequent the arcades in the late 80s/early 90s and having owned a Neo Geo, Fatal Fury is my favorite fighting game series. It started out clunky with the first FF, but by the time 3/Real Bout came around, I thought they had perfected their fighting system.

I've long hoped for some sort of FF sequel, so I was pretty hyped when this game was announced. However, I was kind of let down by the graphics in previews. I played the first beta test and thought the gameplay was fine, but I was also disappointed that it played too much like the KOF games.

After reading that faggot Max Dood and the tranny Reset Era freaks had a meltdown about Ronaldo's inclusion in the game (rape charges from the 90's. The civil case was thrown out of court by the judge because the cunt wouldn't stop flapping her beak to the newspapers), I made the bold and brave decision to stand with Ronaldo and preorder the game, lol. Actually, I was going to originally wait a couple of weeks, and if the game didn't totally blow, I was going to get it anyhow.

I've since learned that they are reinstituting the multi plane fighting system that was the series' trademark, so I'm now cautiously optimistic about the game. If they don't clog up the roster with any more "guests", I'll probably end up really liking this. But if they do, I'll be here screeching about it like a 3d era MK fan, lol.

After reading that faggot Max Dood
Anything he despises based on socio-cultural issues is an automatic consideration.

Dood has no morals or genuine tastes anyway; he drops every game the moment the checks stop coming.
He hypes up every Capcom/NRS game during beta, then after 1-2 weeks post-release he drops the games, and months later says he always saw X and Y issues with the latest games and hence why he doesn't fuck with it.
Every time.

I'm guessing SNK refused to send him free shit.

I hadn't even heard of the guy until recently. I decided to check out a few of his vids and was immediately put off by the animated intro he uses. The "Max" character in that is fairly handsome, meanwhile, he looks like a literal goblin, lol.

Then watching his videos, it was obvious he was a paid shill, and aligned with the modern woke/pc bullshit they try to jam in these games. So fuck that guy.

Something that bothers me a bit... I can't seem to find any youtuber that does vids for SNK games that isn't a shill (or trying to be one). Would you know of any non shill video sources.

Nope.
I used to watch one but then he became a "top ten" slop type of content producer and the quality went into the shitter.
Throgi made a decent "history of KoF"series a few years back, but he's Max Dood lite in the sense he's very contemporary California, but his series was, tbf, well done.
Everyone else is either a Mexican or Brazilian speaking gibberish.

I don't really like the art style very much. It looks worse than KoF XV and I'm not really a big fan of the way that game looks either. The shadows and highlights look fucked up in this new FF game though. I wish they'd stuck with the hand drawn look of KoF 13. Mark of the Wolves was peak Fatal Fury. On the other hand, it looks like a better game than the most recent MK game.

I saw that video, and it was very well done. I think he's done similar vids on other fighting games that were also very good. I'm not aware of his other content, and it sounds like it's just as well.

It's a shame that the best era of SNK's died in the late 90's. They seem a fair bit underappreciated these days, to me.

Same. I'll get it on sale and play it on my Steam Deck at some point. SNK games are often dead as fuck online anyway, so it's not like I'm missing out on some massive community by not playing it at launch. If I want some competition, I'll just play with some of my other SNKfag friends who also plan on getting it further down the line. Nothing they've shown so far really has me that hyped. I was way more excited for the SamSho reboot, and that community was dead on arrival on PS4.

This kinda blows, game's available for "early access" but I'm stuck working. I'm watching a stream right now...not Dood's, why did that homo even bother to make a stink about the game if he was going to stream it anyway, lol. Looks pretty good from what I can see so far.

Looks like I still can't bind the numpad or the space bar on release, I actually enjoyed playing the game during the beta too, but I guess I'm forced to skip this game if they can't even make a proper PC release.

Now that I've had a couple of days to play, I thought I'd weigh in on my thoughts about the game.

Minor quibbles aside, I love this game. I don't play online (never cared for playing against someone that wasn't at the same machine or room as me), so I can't speak to those features. Arcade mode is... well, stan dard arcade mode. Without spoiling anything too much, it looks like this will likely be the final Fatal Fury game. Everything seems to wrap up here, story-wise. Naturally, they can always start a new arc. The only issue I have with the character stories is that there are no real bad guys here. Even the characters that are supposed to be baddies are not really written that way. They even seem to be trying to rehabilitate Geese's nasty reputation. I've said this before about Terry's story for SF6 and I'll repeat it here...he's definitely mentally retarded or badly braindamaged from all the fighting, lol.

The Episodes of South Town is a decent secondary story mode (secondary in that the main thrust of each character's story is covered in Arcade mode). You are presented with maps of the city, and you basically grind your way through fights with NPCs and versions of the game characters to build up experience points (and unlock stuff). Some fights advance the story. It's OK, but I prefer the story mode styles in SF5 or MK 11.

I'm still getting the hang of the newly introduced fighting systems, so not much to say there yet, beyond the fact that the REV system does seem to force some pacing in the fights.

Ganacci, the DJ character, looks like he was planned for and well thought out, probably from the start of game production. Ronaldo, on the other hand... not so much. He can only be played online, and I guess for versus offline mode: no Arcade or EoST for him. Was he a later edition planned as DLC, and they rush release him for the launch, or perhaps there are issues with how they can use him for the game. I'm still not terribly happy that they included either, but as long as other legacy characters continue to pour in, and they don't include any more "guests", I can live with it.

I wish that I didn't have to wait 26 years for a Fatal Fury sequel, but I'm happy now that it's here.

Ganacci (the character, IDK who this guy really is nor do I care) is fucking dimes. Best joke/jest character since Shingo for me.
He's well thought out, well animated, and emotes a "just happy to be here" aura.

On the plus side, you may never have to wait again. I doubt they'll ever make another one, and I honestly wouldn't mind if they didn't.
The story is done. No need to pull a Street Fighter and try and drag on a story that we all know will lead back to M. Bison being the big bad because Capcom know they will never top him.

It was wrapped up by Fatal Fury 2.
Fury 3 always felt like an epilogue/b-story, and Mark Of The Wolves could've been the start of something new but they took 26 fucking years to half-heartedly answer the questions that game's story left behind.
If they can't commit to sequels in 3-4 year intervals nor make lengthy/detailed stories for their latest entries, end it and make something new or something give something else you had time to shine.
I mean this for KoF too. The last two entries had fuck-all story and fuck-all happened to boot besides a crummy reason to bring back everyone from the Orochi Saga.
They either don't know what to do with these characters or are too lazy to write any new stories, so just end it. Maybe make one last pixel/2D KoF as a SlugFest/DreamMatch entry and hang the boots up; 15 games and 3 story arcs- you had a good run and are fondly remembered to the point of being pop culture to-this-day in several countries worldwide.

Where Ryu is the eternal vagabond who lives for the thrill of the fight, Terry is the eternal manchild/Shonen archetype who lives for good times and defending his friends from those who seek to harm them. That's the extent of their characters. One dimensional but it's enough.
Lord knows the companies who have tried to give their fighting game characters depth have screwed the pooch more times than not.

Correct, I still don't like the inclusion of "real people" in this game, but they made Ganacci work. If it had been just some made-up guy "DJ Ben Dover" or something, no one would have been the wiser.

I'm also fine if they don't make another one. They wrapped everything up here nicely.

My favorite FF games are all the post FF3 ones, but yeah, as far as the story goes, it could/should have ended at 2.

I never cared much for the KOF series. There was nothing really wrong with it, just never did much for me. These games are a lot like comic books. After a while, you've pretty much written all the good stories you can with them. Then where do you go? Rehashes and remakes of old stories

I know, but it's funnier, to me, to think guys like Ryu and Terry are mentally retarded or braindamaged.

EDIT: Like, these games are idealized retellings of old tales of these characters, but in real time, these guys were stumbling and lurching about, drooling, saying to randos "Hrrrrr, wanna fight? Durrhhh!!"

That is kinda strange. Fighting against other people is at the heart of fighting games. Or are you lucky enough to live somewhere where you can attend a lot of locals and majors ? Because than I could follow that sentiment. Though I think especially nowadays with decent netcode online is the same if not more important.

I might sit this one out and wait till the DLC is done. Not impressed with the roster and would rather come into it when Krauser and Geese get added.

I don't play fighters online because I refuse to pay the subscription fees to PSN.
Also my current PC plays all post SF4 fighters like ass.

Perfectly fine reasons not to play online, I understood his comment differently.

Don't know what it was, but I ran into the laggiest opponents today. What a shitshow.
Jumping over Tizoc seems to be his Achilles heel. His down fierce and Olympus Over and decent at mid to long range, but unless to Just Defend and anticipate a jump it's oppressive at close range. I also think the throw range is either too far or deceptive, especially with the pushback from a REV block.

I was very hyped about this one but lost interest in the last few weeks. Official reason is because of how disgusted I am at Ronaldo and Ganacci (though this second one at least looks fun), unofficial reason is because I got super salty playing online getting my shit kicked in by Rock while trying out Tizoc. Summary is I'm passing on it. I mkay reconsider if the single player content has some meat to it. Any of you guys that bought in can confirm or deny this?

I'm old enough to have been in my very late teens when I first encountered Street Fighter 2 in a bowling alley in the summer of 92. While SF 2 and most other fighting games became MP juggernauts, those games, especially SNK games, were made as much for solo play as for versus play. I've always been content to play solo, but if I play versus, I can't really enjoy it unless there's someone in the same room for banter/shittalk.
@ShitLurker For now, solo play consists of an arcade mode, a story mode (kind of grindy, but there's alot of solo fighting to be had. And some gimmick solo modes (survivor etc.) It's more than plenty for me ymmv.
