I checked the law in Minnesota, and it is indeed illegal to lie to doctors to obtain medicine. Especially controlled substances. The thing is, it's one of those things that's very hard to prove in court without him basically outright saying, "I lied to some doctor about having ADHD to get a prescription for Adderall."

I know people with convictions for obtaining drugs by deception (though I'm not in Minnesota,).

In that case, all it took was for a doctor to stand up in court and say 'He told me his previous doctor was prescribing A. He didn't tell me Dr. X, Dr. Y and Dr. Z were also prescribing to him simultaneously.' My friend didn't expect the doctor to testify, thinking that his oath of confidentiality would cover his arse, but if the doctor has been lax in his prescribing practices (and you can only scam the lax ones into overprescribing in this way), the cops have got a lever they can use to persuade them to testify. And juries tend to believe doctors over junkie scam artists.
