Even if that's generally true, Vitaly is going to be on the wrong end of survivorship bias. Filipinos are like Thais IME, generally small and unintimidating but a handful are hard as nails- human honey badgers. Also remember that Vitaly is going to be losing a ton of weight, and will almost certainly be putty in the hands of anyone who can hook him up with something filling.

That's not to say it's a walk in the park. Watch any youtube video of people touring a Philippines prison and you will see it's essentially a free for all. Overcrowding means prisoners sort of roam free in a large barracks that are run by prison gangs. One study (PDF warning again) mentions that overcrowding has lead to shitty health conditions and that the gangs are "the de facto sources of discipline and many services." Meaning no prison guard will save Vitaly and he will need to rely on the gangs for medication, protections, etc.

What's worse for Vitaly is that he's being made an example of by the government. That pretrial wait time comes down if you can essentially bribe the court system. However, when you have angry politicians talking about you on the morning news, some low level judge isn't about to put their neck out for you.

It's gonna be fun seeing Vitaly morph into a skeleton over the next 1-3 years as he awaits trial.
