It's believable that Gamemaker's scripting runtime ends up running 20% more overall instructions when you access a value indirectly as the member of some storage class, rather than from a global array. But like you said, that difference is meaningless for something rarely accessed, like story flags.
this came up a few times and the 20% measure is only relevant if you're doing something that is accessed hundreds of times per frame, which is really only something you do, say, if you're writing physics

putting the entire storyline decision tree array at runtime in memory is retarded

Man I don't write for a living and if you tell me to write a short story that is decent I'd probably fail so I'm sure 'writing' as a trade is hard but some of these writers are just perplexing. Why do you even chose to write if you don't want to?

idk anything about code but I'm having trouble wrapping my brain around how finalized dialogue would take all day to update into the game? isn't that just sentences? wouldn't it just be clicking upload? wouldn't the data size be pretty small given its just text?
unless I am missing something (which I very well could be), it sounds like he is crunching. again I don't know anything about code, so correct me if im wrong.

Technically you're now wiser than "Thor", since neither does he know anything about code, but you at least know you don't know anything.

Mald's making his game in (edit) GameMaker. Honestly, if you ever have a bored weekend, download it yourself and go watch one of those tutorials on YouTube. The things he are doing are trivially easy, and I'm fairly certain most people could pick up the skills required to make a game like Earthbound... Heartbound I mean.

The dialog itself would be the easiest part, although from what I remember in his streams, the dialog can clip (draw over) the portraits on the right of the text box.

Portraits need to be selected and the text needs to get visual effects applied to it, for 120 lines, well, maybe 2 hours at best, and that's generously assuming every single line of text has complex effect markup.

If anything were to take time, it would be testing the different story branches, if the dialogs trigger the right story flags, etc.

Since heartbound generally has a lot of lines between choices, there probably wouldn't be that much to test, a dozen branches at most, and I'd expect someone who claims to be as experienced as Mald to get most of it right the first time.

So, all day actually means something like 4 hours maximum.

Point still stands. It takes days to get on Mald's skill level when it comes to gamedev, as proven multiple times by participants in this thread.

Speaking of streaming, he hasn't been, so I guess he really has been working on the game a few days right before the deadline. We might actually see the update drop tonight. My money was on another postponement, but I guess he understands he's at the end of his rope.

Not necessarily. He's been making a habit of not streaming on Thursdays for over a year, and added taking Wednesday off to that at the beginning of this year clearly to do more mushroom farming/foraging/DM'ng/hiking/animal rescue shit/etc.

Are you telling me this nigger couldn’t figure out text auto-wrapping? Does he have to manually type “\n” every time he needs a new line? It might seem like a small thing but if you’re gonna be writing thousands of lines of dialogue, that wasted time starts adding up fast. Even Toby “switch case” Fox figured that out for his dialogue system.

He will definitely have something this time around, only because he delayed April and just continued work on that. Regardless the update is going to be shallow.
