I can't help but go back to the civ 7 disaster. It's something that can never fully leave the mind no matter how much time has passed. Like it was the most disappointing video game for me at least in a long time. I've grown so cynical and jaded with the game industry to the point where disappointment is almost completely garenteed and was still disappointed. This, Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, and the Switch 2 announcement killed any remaining child like joy I had with the gaming industry and I can't forgive it for that.

Drew continues his half baked defense but even he starting to notice things are different this time.

The youtube comments are far more interesting.

Good news is Civ 7's numbers seemed to have stabilized around a core. Bad news is that core is smaller than even Civ 5's, which is utterly embarrassing for what should have been a new mainline entry to surpass 6.

It's 7 out of 10 at best and mostly focused on combat. l love this series but it's as far from civ games as it can get for a strategy game. For civ-fag it's better to try something like Old World.
This isnt the AOW thread but IV feels very grey goo-ish (the setting suffers from AoS problem where they ratcheted to a multiverse thing where its easy to just not care about the entire thing since everything you do is meaningless) compared to its previous iteration (AOW3 for all its flaws is still a good game), and I'd recommend you checking that one first if you like to get a feel of the setting.

I played a bunch of it yesterday. The game is pretty and is decent enough. But you know what the problem is?

Building your cities and expanding them with structures is too shallow. All you need for an advanced building is to have built the prerequisite structure and have enough gold. Where is the tech tree for buildings? It totally messes up the game. They have tech trees for military, how did they miss this obvious thing?

Civ IV never let me down.

Speaking of games with IV in the title, how is Age of Wonders IV?
Civ IV was the objective peak of the series. Civ V which followed was not bad either and debatably was might have been better.

Firaxis completely fumble the bag

Yeah I still put a lot of time into 4 and 5. Very fun, playable games. The earlier ones are just too dated and I did not like 6. Totally passed on 7.

I am fine with Firaxis fucking up. Revenge for XCOM2. All I want is a re-release of Enemy Within on new systems and they insist on giving me number two. Oh well!

As underwhelming as 7 is, it's still better than Humankind or, Allah forgive me for speaking it's name, Millenia.

I think Civs have gotten better with ever iteration. A lot of people stopped at 5, and talked as much shit about 6 as everyone is about 7. After a lot of time with 6 I can't go back. The district system(including Wonders taking a tile) absolutely made city building more interesting. Not having to found your city on the coast to produce ships is great. Religious victory sucks, but I still play religious civs for Faith as a resource.

Before Civ 7 was even announced I knew there was going to be the phase Civ always has where the base game plus expansion plus years of tweaking overshadows the new game and it's base mechanics. Where the previous version was superior than the successor for while.

And Civ 7 did still fall under even those expectations.

However I do think Civ 7 has the potential to be a game as good as predecessors. It's biggest(and most obvious issue) is that the fucking thing wasn't finished. Look no further than Ageless buildings in the "final" Modern Age. Clearly there is suppose to be a 4th Age that got hacked off to sell. The initially DLC was all accidentally turned on when the first part of it was release, clearly cut out content resold.

I think 2K is really stepping on their balls for monetization. Firaxis fucking bombed with the legit fantastic Marvel Midnight Suns. I doubt Chimera Squad made that much. I think this was suppose to be a live service game until Concord spooked the industry(the reason Leaders are consistent rather than civs between the ages are to sell cosmetics/battle pass[/tinfoil]), I think it got pushed out a year early so 2K has some coins rattling around when Borderlands 4, they stupidly made before seeing if the movie was successful, flops.

I know it seems like I'm shifting the blame off the devs, but I really loved Civ 6, I think their last major release, Midnight Suns, is a really well done game. So I'm willing to give them some slack.

But I still ain't paying $30 for 2 leaders and 4 civs.

Honestly, the devs don't matter. Autistic Chinese people will make a complete overhaul mod that fixes most things while adding more content in 3 years time.

That never really happened with Civ VI though.

As someone who followed the Reddit & YT banter for a good chunk of VI's lifecycle, there was a great sense of betrayal from hardcore modders and their enthusiasts that Firaxis never released the ?.DLL files in the end to allow total conversion mods (and major tweaking of AI).

That's why there's no Vox Populi equivalent for VI as their was for V.

There's still some decent AI tweaking mods for VI, and others to strip out things like the Loyalty system or the World Congress.

But my understanding is that Firaxis made a philosophy change with VI to ice out modders going forward, likely for legal/IP/competitor/wanting to sell more DLC reasons.

How was the Microsoft one? Unplayable?
It's fine, decent even. I personally like it because it mixes production management elements from games like Anno. Which tickles my autism. It has current year shit like Tubman but at least most female leaders are not butt ugly. It runs like ass tho. If it ran well it would be the best 4X released since Civ VI.
And I will say that Millenia is also not bad. It looks like shit but the gameplay was fine.
