Usually the addiction is a flawed coping mechanism for other issues. Hence why a lot of people fail in rehab. Even if one gets clean of their drug of choice, they don't have the life skills necessary to deal with life.Most drug users are low impulse control types who would have ruined their life with something if the drugs weren't the issue. My dad always told this story of a guy he worked with who would spend his paycheck at the bar withing a couple days. He finally quit drinking and then started blowing his paychecks on baseball card collecting. Almost all homeless people you meet are just nick without the trustfund and family support. It's almost ubiquitous.
We see this in addicts like Nick in how he has simply changed the specific drugs he is abusing, with others that are less likely to get him in trouble.
