Yeah, Becky with the Good Hair is a thing. Somehow some types of women's hair became a whole referendum on their attractiveness and competence. The historical contributors to that are not hard to locate. But the bottom line is that whatever anyone does with their hair, it's their business. Having 1a or 3a or 4a-c hair isn't a good or bad thing. You just have to get real and deal with what you've got. Personally, I think natural 4a-c hair is gorgeous. And her mom wears protective styles and can look regal. But Meghan apparently doesn't feel her natural hair, or "Black" hairstyles, fit her aesthetic. And if she wants to straighten it (obviously yes; there's no question her hair isn't naturally straight/ how she wears it), fine for her. If it looked good (done however), great. But it doesn't. Meghan's problem is not that she straightens it or wears extensions; it's that she's sloppy and delusional. It’s pretty old and a little dated now — it came out in like 2009 I think — but Chris Rock’s documentary “Good Hair” is very interesting and informative about black people’s hair and the ungodly amounts of money (mostly) black women spend to mutilate theirs to keep it straight. It goes into the industry of their hair care products, weaves, etc. but there are also some really heartbreaking (to me) moments where it’s shown that even little black girls are led to believe they’re “supposed” to straighten their hair. It talks a lot about how these women think and feel about their hair. Seems pretty self-loathing and insidious. I can believe Meghan, even though she’s mixed, shared that loathing. The movie’s worth a watch if you have nothing better to do. A handful of celebs are featured and interviewed in it.
