UK British News Megathread - aka CWCissey's news thread

A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Fair enough, without getting into details I will vouchsafe that there are plenty of "non-urban" Nandos that are perfectly pleasant to dine at.

My understanding was that darkies preferred fried chicken to grilled. Maybe there should be a policy of placing a KFC within 500 yards of each Nandos to distract them away
I mean if my plan of "If they're black send 'em back" was followed we wouldn't have this issue. Like 85% of societal ills in this country can be solved by taking the rubbish out.

Edited to say, labour knows if they break up fo summer recess (like seriously how fucking weak is that? They have weeks off,not just two I mean over a month. Fucking pathetic) with starmer hanging over them it'll be a summer of discontent.

Oh you're worried about your benefits? Look at the pm away on his hollibobs. That sort of thing. It'll be career suicide or supreme arrogance to leave the issue hanging.

Exactly, though this white paper does nothing because it does not even deal with ILLEGAL immigration.

I think this is to its benefit. Illegal migration is a drop in the bucket compared to legal migration, yet it always gets more attention.

Restricting visas for dependents would have a far greater impact than sinking every small boat trying to cross the channel.

I just hate Nandos because it tastes shit
Nandos was also on my list of things to do while I'm here. I wanted to experience contemporary British cuisine. It's fucking vile. The driest most flavorless insult to a living being that I have ever had the misfortune to pass over my tongue. I understand the usual tactic is to slather them in the hottest sauce imaginable to help forget that you killed a chicken to eat cardboard, but I don't enjoy spicy things even when they taste good, so overall I'd rate Nandos a solid negative five out of ten. Nuke the place.

I'd seen all the Greggsposting and memes and dire photographs and assumed that Greggs was the butt of a joke. I was very surprised to try one of the chicken pastries and find that it was rather delicious (if expensive.)

Any recommendations for other staples would be appreciated. Once I leave this country this year, I don't think I'll be coming back - hopefully that pleases you all, foreigners out.
We became an island of strangers in 1990s
Didn't you become an island of strangers when Thatcher destroyed the community?

Nandos quality can be highly variable. The one near me is great. Always juicy and freshly prepared.

What you need to find is a good chippy and get cod and chips, or a proper meat pie. None of that Hollands rubbish.

They didn't specify the species of fish, but I did get a meal from a chippy. The fish was huge and acceptably tasty for the price. The chips were depressing. There were also confusing signs on the wall begging patrons to not get angry about price rises. This country is so weird.

Yeah but you're still pretending you give a fuck about immigrants.
I don't just want Reform to win the next General Election, I want Labour to be fucking destroyed. The best way of doing that is divide and conquer, sowing dissent into Labour voters into splitting their votes between Labour, Greens and Lib Dems.

Yesterday I watched Kier Starmer say "Immigrants should speak English", which is within an inch of what a very close friend of mine said which resulted in him losing a very well paid job thanks to his first ever criminal record last Summer. There are people probably still on probation for what they posted last Summer that woke up and saw the very person who called them scum last year has decided that maybe they were a little bit right. Their records aren't getting wiped, they're going to have the stigma of a criminal record hovering over them for the next dozen years. They, their family and their friends are all furious to an extent of how the UK has been gaslit for decades by politicians who run on campaigns of cutting immigration only to increase it.

If the Tories are likely dead from fucking up immigration and treating the public as niggercattle then I want Labour to fucking die too. You just know this big scary whitepaper of logical things that should have happened 15 years ago won't be implemented within the year, and the "closing ECHR loopholes" is going to be a back and forward shitfest until 2029, leading to more Raheem's and Bhutan's arriving.

Same here

Even if it means the Lib Dems, Greens, or both hoovering up Labour and Tory votes next time out, I want Labour and Tories to be considered as ex-parties.

I'd even welcome Davey as LOTO, barmy as he is.

Honestly the best way to find awesome local food is to ask local people.

I've lived all over the UK. Last time I moved was over 2 years back but prior to that I had moved 9 times in 8 years.

All of my favorite places to eat came as a result of asking at my local for recommendations, be it to go to or avoid. Also yes, insert obligatory Greggs reference here but find a nice independent local bakers too. That's how I can to know the joys of curd tart and butter pie.

Also re: Youth Demand. What a bunch of spastics. What is with people giving a fuck about Israel total rendition-ing Palestine when there's a shit load of actual domestic issues? Place is burning down but let's obsess about Hamas paying consequences for their decades of shitty actions.

You need to find a better chippy. A bad chipshop has disappointing chips, like paper bags filled with slime. A good chippy has chips that are a hymn to potatoes.
You must eat the chip supper outside facing the sea, with a stick to ward off gulls.
If you want to vaguely dox where you are looking I can give you recommendations in hibernia and Yorkshire.

I'm here for several months and I'm trying to see it all. If you have a place in mind, I'll probably be close to it at some point.

... What's "Hibernia"? Searching it shows it to be an obscure name for Ireland.

The best chippies are on the coast in the North East and North West, probably something to do with the water used to mix the batter. I've never enjoyed a chippy in London, even though I had to remortgage my house to pay for it.
I've heard the water thing too, and anecdotally, my hair was in far better nick living on East Coast of Scotland than on the West Coast.

Things must be downright apocalyptic in the background if Starmer is being forced to admit immigration may be going a bit too far.

I really hope no one falls for this, he doesn't mean it and it is obvious to anyone paying attention his "solution" is a homeopathic level of reduction in immigrant numbers that would not make a dent on the damage going on.
