If you're doing this remotely often preload some of your settings using autounattend.xml. You can build one out quickly here: https://schneegans.de/windows/unattend-generator/
If its a one-off its probably not worth it, but it can definitely save some time and headaches in the longrun.

I have a Dell laptop that I use for work and it came with a dell branded docking station and runs windows 11. About 3/5 times I boot into windows while connected to the dock the laptop loses it mind. It freezes on start and pumps heat out of the fan vent. I have to unplug the dock, press and hold the power button until it restarts, then set up all of my monitors again in the display settings. It’s fucking infuriating and IT won’t replace it because they don’t think it’s a problem to tell me to just wait to plug in my dock.

Fucking pajeet niggers getting their shitty hands all over windows. I never had problems like this with windows 10 and my Fedora desktop doesn’t have these problems.

Why does every PC peripheral need its own gay software which runs in the background all the time and collects data on you to send to the chinks, why can't we have polling rate, dpi, and other such mouse setting built into the OS like every other OS. You should check to see if the dock has a firmware update. I know I used to have to update them (as IT) every once in a while due to problems, particularly around Windows 11's launch.
It also depends on what kind of dock it is, if its something like a Toshiba Dynadock it will always suck, while something using DP Alt mode (all new docks using a USB C cable) should "just work".

I used to just keep a copy of Windows around which had all this gay software installed. Although I found that the settings would save on the device most of the time so I ended up nuking Windows with a clean install and none of this crap, haven't had problems since. Although your mileage may vary.

That's a good idea. I have two of these Dell branded docks and both have the same issue (but both are about the same age and haven't been updated). They're both expensive and both have been the cause of significant headaches. Modern tech seems to be nothing but despair.

I don’t know what I’m going to do when Win 10 support ends in October. I have tried various flavours of alternative OS’s and, despite what people say about them, I swear to god they are not a good replacement for Windows. They simply do not work well with all of the software I’d like to use. And I have no intention of tinkering with them for hours each week just to get them to play nice with various programs.

I guess maybe I’ll bite the bullet and pay MSFT $30/ year to provide Win 10 updates for the next year or two.

Windows 10 IoT LTSC gets updates until 2032. Although I do suspect that Microsoft will "strongly encourage" third parties to quickly drop 10 support from their programs, so how successful you are at staying on 10 will depend on what programs you use.
If you need Windows then use Windows 11, its absolutely worse then Windows 10 but its not unusable yet, especially the LTSC version. Its still better then any Linux at least.

Really depends on how much fucking around you want to do, but I would try out Windows 11 LTSC first before jumping ship to a Linux, especially if Linux doesn't suit your needs.

The rate that Windows is being Jeeted is impressive. But the old white made spaghetti code is so embedded in the system with things like the Control Panel that they won't be able to remove all of it without the Windows house of cards tumbling down, so Windows at its core will still be good for many years to come.
If you want some entertainment, find a copy of the Windows XP source code and look at the comments (get horrified at the spaghetti code too). Its gold.

Compared to regular Windows, the LTSC stuff doesn't have the Jeetware apps preinstalled. Its pretty much just Edge and the absolute core Windows stuff like Explorer, Control Panel, Command Prompt, etc out of the box.
The updates are all security only (still automatic by default but not only easily disabled, the security ones aren't a big deal to manage, its the feature updates that fuck with machines) and there's a lot less fucking around with your machine from MS.
Otherwise its basically the same as the regular Windows 10/11 editions. You can run the same software on it, etc. Its just a lot more minimal out of the box and needs a lot less tard wrangling to become a good and stable system.
Its not as good or free to fuck around with as say Windows 7 but even the Jeets at MS know to not fuck with their Enterprise customers, so compared to regular Windows 10/11 its amazing.
You can even install the Windows Store if you really do need it, a single PowerShell command (wsreset -i) will download it back on your machine for you, so there is no real downsides.
IoT is the same as LTSC overall outside of getting 5 more years of updates, and a few other relatively minor differences like being able to activate IoT LTSC using a digital license (very much preferred) vs just KMS for regular LTSC, not being able to officially uninstall Edge on IoT (which sucks).
The only difference that really matters is 5 years more security updates on IoT LTSC. So go for that if you pick one.

You'll be left with a few leftovers like the open in Edge proxy and other oddities, but for the most part Windows just respects that you've decided to nuke the Edge folder and forgets it was even there. I don't know why Edge uninstallers don't just look at the files and registry keys that Edge uses and then deletes them without the uninstaller. That's all an uninstaller is meant to do, manipulate the files and the registry.

Uninstalled Edge on my win10 boot with Wise, checked Wise to uninstall something else after some months had passed and noticed it was back. Be sure to look out for it whenever you install an update.

Guess there's nothing better to do on a Sunday overcast than messing with your computer in ways you probably shouldn't.

I followed the Massgrave guide on switching regular Windows 22H2 to LTSC. The trick is to:
1. Set your registry so that it identifies as IoT LTSC
2. Quickly run the regular LTSC installer that matches your system locale and architecture so that it gets tricked into believing it's installing on an LTSC system
3. If it was tricked properly and it said that it'll install while retaining your files and apps, let it cause havoc in your system

Afterwards, I was dropped back into my desktop with little to no changes. Things like disabled animations and lock screen image got reset, but other oddities like my custom sound and cursor schemes were left intact. After that I just had to switch the edition to IoT LTSC in MAS and then activate via TSForge. Funnily enough, it reinstalled Edge, but I was able to delete it by just right clicking on it and selecting "uninstall", no extra fiddling needed. Thanks Microsoft.

Now this install should be getting security updates up to 2032, and should technically be indistinguishable from 22H2 when running software.

If you don't care about running an older OS on a potato like that, then you can get away with an older version of Windows. The best Windows will be based on the age of the machine due to drivers and other stuff, for this case I imagine it would be most likely 7, but maybe XP. If the machine had 4gb of ram and was slightly newer, I would have recommended trying out 10, but no way if you only have 2. It won't be a nice experience. Both 7 and XP are decent enough versions of Windows that can be trimmed down to very minimal systems, if its not good enough out of the box.
I won't talk about Linux here but I will note that if you want a more up to date OS on that device, its your only choice.

I would try out 7 anyways, it doesn't have a built in AV like Defender nor a lot of the crap that more modern Windows ships, and your emulators/other stuff won't be horrendously out of date for a few more years. But it has similar system requirements overall to 8.1, so it may still run poorly for you. At least you can set your theme to Windows Classic in 7 which will help a ton, Aero can be a resource hog.
Your hardware honestly sounds weak enough to warrant trying out XP, but only try if your hardware has driver support for it. On a machine with 2gb of ram, XP will run amazing, but your software will also be much older. I would still try both XP and 7, and seeing what runs best for you.
