Stupid people be stupid. And no, for me, this has nothing to do with race, creed, or culture. I don't give a shit about the color of your skin. If you're smart, you're smart. If you're dumb, you're dumb.
Adding shades of gray to that is that you can be dumb smart and smart dumb. I know people who aren't "conventionally" that smart that have been incredibly successful. I know PHd educated people who insist on using "Dr." even though they aren't a medical doctor who spout some of the most inane shit on the planet. I also know people IRL who are technically smart, but succumbed to deep deep untreated mental illness, with continuing down the mental illness path validated by close family.
The last one example actually hurts a lot to say because the last person is my cousin and they fucking hate my guts, and it was damaging for my relationship with other extended family to say they needed to be involuntarily committed). But he was a single child to two severely mentally ill parents, which A) contributed greatly to their genetic likelihood of having similar mental health issues and B) gave them a complex because as they are smart, they learned they could manipulate their mentally ill parents into doing whatever they wanted. It gave them a general holier-than-thou (really smarter-than-thou) attitude, which was particularly damning when they succumbed to mental illness. You're all wrong, I'm not crazy, I need to go on an expedition in Canada and fast like Jesus and it's demons making me mentally ill.
For those who say the above represents autistic trauma shit or whatever, maybe. I only mention it to contextualize my view of Johnny Somali.
Johnny may have some degree of mental illness, probably not to the degree of my cousin, but all reports I've seen he strikes me as a different type of lolcow. I don't think Johnny hallucinates like crazy or whatever, but I think he is a person who sees themself as above consequence. That could be derived from wealth (which I've also seen - imagine graduating college, having no real career path, and dad says "
eh I'll just buy you multiple restaurants to run!"), but even if it isn't, a history of doing outrageous shit via fucking around and never finding out via real consequence can embolden some people to believe they can act in a way very much against societal norms. You believe if I'm entertaining people I'm good (Johnny's audience validating Johnny), therefore if I violate some norms for the funny it's good, and BTW every time I've done this I've either been asked to leave or kicked out and got an extremely generous plea bargain, hey, I can just spend my way out of trouble. Ride the endorphins, fuck it, YOLO!
There's a warning printed a couple pages into a US passport that the penalty for crimes committed in another country can be much harsher than the penalties for the same crime in the United States. It's deeply underrated advice, and often completely ignored. Johnny either wasn't aware of it or ignored it. You want to fuck around and find out with being openly disrespectful in public in much of Asia, eventually you
will find out.
Johnny is smart enough to understand his audience likes the content he makes (even if it's hatewatching) and he's smart enough to understand that his notoriety grows so does his views and money. He's a stupid motherfucker to contextualize never having legal battles result in significant consequences before as being immune to the law. It's a slap on the wrist, a fine, whatever.
I 100% believe Johnny did what he did. Where the Korean legal system goes, I'm not a lawyer, but being that open of a dickhead in Asian cultures is generally massively frowned upon.
