I think the Wii U situation was unique. Nintendo courted a new market that only cared about the Wii and when Nintendo didn't cater exclusively to them, they left. It's why the "Is this a Wii accessory" was dumb yet real. Yeah, low information Grandma who doesn't keep up with gaming news would probably not realize the Wii U is a system and not just the tablet. There will never be a flop like Wii U. There CAN be a flop like the 3DSS and I think it's pretty likely. It probably won't reach Switch's sales given the price, shitty economy, and lack of novelty, but I can't imagine it will do as bad as the Wii U. The Wii U had some unique problems with its fucked up marketing, there was more direct competition from PlayStation and Xbox at the time, and Nintendo consoomerism wasn't as big at the time. The Switch feels like it turned a lot of people into the vidya version of Disney adults who will buy up anything Nintendo because they consider it a part of their identity. At worst, I predict the Switch 2 will sell a lot at first then taper off into uncomfortably mediocre sales until a game that really hypes people is released (Mario Kart isn't that. It sells a lot, but I think it's a more casual seller that people will buy once they have a console, rather than buy a console just to play it).
I think people are underestimating how much of an impact the price is. Despite what Industry Analyst say, $70 has absolutely killed the big publishers. Nothing sells well anymore. Every sequel to a big title that was a $60 game has done way worse. Monster Hunter Wild has sold half of World and it's in a massive decline (given Steam charts). Spiderman 2 sold like half of the first game (which was a 20 million seller). Now DOOM is flopping with worse numbers than Dragon Age. No controversy. No woke shit. Yet no one is buying it. Even Elden Ring, which was a big hit, sold more on Steam where it's only $60. I think Nintendo doesn't realize how much of an impact $70 and $80 games will have. Mario Kart sales will likely fall off a cliff after release and once they go through the bundle.
