You underestimate some people's lust for pity points

It's not pity points, it's internet points. The real reason why these stories are posted every now and then is to farm upvotes. This has an actual purpose because many subreddits will automatically remove your posts if you don't have enough points on your profile in order to "prevent spam".
The easiest way of farming these points is to start a thread about sex on one of the subreddits that doesn't have this limitation, since these threads always receive tons of attention. This is also why there are so many ChatGPT generated stories posted to these places. After you get your upvotes you can just delete the thread and the upvote count remains on your profile. You now have a "legit" account that can be used in most of the places on the site.
