I'm old enough to remember the "RTFM" ("read the fucking manual") era of Linux "help" and despite having been good at RTFM, I don't miss those times. The same applies to using LLMs to get excellent technical advice that sounds polite vs. humans on Stack Overflow and other such sites. The long and short of it is that, if you have an answer and it's easy to give, why not just give that answer?

It's more that traditional search and the clearnet are fucking garbage and fluff pieces dominate the web. You can't even find a mainstream media company to report accurately that men aren't women.

Yandex was mentioned earlier and it can be quite useful; the same applies to DuckDuckGo. They're also great for media piracy.

"it's not my job to educate you!" leaves people finding false narratives, especially if what we discuss really is controversial

I know it can be frustrating but it's worth trying to keep important (to you) resources to share because even with Yandex or whatever, it can be difficult to find the truth or at least different viewpoints and information. If your own sources are wrong or not whole then that should be challenged too. Certain things interest me but if I try to talk to anyone about it all they can get are astroturfed mainstream/activist opinions, so they'll just shrug and say they don't know what I'm talking about. This isn't really their fault and the onus is on me to provide evidence for my argument, but I'm generally too lazy tbh so we chill

Right, that was my main point. It’s just not easy to find stuff these days, especially “controversial” topics. I even had to ask Gemini about when/why NDT met Isaac Asimov, because even after four different Google searches, all I got was events NDT goes to named after Asimov; not hidden, just terrible search results. And I can search effectively.

I also figure if people are keen on certain topics, they’ll share links or sources if they have them. I’m not asking anyone to read them for me, just to point me where they find a convincing argument. Maybe I'm an outlier in that I have organized bookmarks on lots of shit:

I've had mostly very good results with DeepSeek (except where virtually all well-known public LLMs cuck out on the user) but my new phone came with Gemini bundled. Maybe I'll compare them sometime.
