It's been like this for a long time. Years ago at this point, during one of his monthly videochats, somebody sperged at him over using the word "retard" (maybe in the Sonic video?) and said they'd explain why it was so very harmful to him over email. Something similar happened more recently when he used the term "special needs". It's hard to get a read on his chat sometimes.
Pretty much, the biggest hope is some gacha game getting sued by a mega whale. But those whales are usually too buck broken by the game to sue and risk killing the franchise.
If Valve won't release HL3, fans will, and I bet by the time he is done with the main game and the first two episodes, Episode 3 mod will be released and might even have custom content tailor made for Ross/suggested by him. I am thinking this is going to be his "finale", unless he will just give up after a certain point. FM has to be the longest running machinima/Let's Play at this point, I think only Red vs Blue can claim to rival it and Rooster Teeth is out of business by now, it is perfectly understandable if Ross would throw in the towel eventually. Very anti-climactic, but what can you do, do we seriously want him to keep making episodes when he's 50-60? There is already an entire generation who watched FM1 in High School, graduated, married and have kids now. Think about that, they will be retiring too by the time FM 2 and it's episodes finish by this rate.

A couple years back, I re-watched FM1 from start to finish over a long weekend and I was impressed how many jokes/observations were recycled. In fairness, FM1 lasted a long time and had long hiatuses (Machinima BS) so if you were watching in real time, you wouldn’t notice as much. That’s more of a problem for long solo levels, but whenever he’s interacting with NPCs, that’s when some new gems come out (Kleiner backstory from grad school, Gordon being an ass to Alyx/Eli Vance, Father Grigori, etc). My hope is if/when FM2 starts up again, we’ll see more of this since HL2 has way more NPCs.
