Tactical Indie RPGs - The sucessors of X-COM, Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy Tactics and Heroes of Might and Magic.

Seconded. It's a fantastic game. One observation though -- don't go into it thinking it's an exact X-Com clone. The game emphasizes stealth a lot more than X-Com does. In fact, in most missions it's pretty difficult to win if things turn hot. Combat is very punishing.
Agreed on that, specially since if your agents blow cover, you'll need to blow money on a new identity or else they'll get captured during a scour mission, with a chance of em being brainwashed.

Also, I can recommend Hard West 2, it was from the same devs that made Phantom Doctorine.

Actually it isn't.
After Phantom Doctrine flopped there was a takeover which saw original developers ousted from CreativeForge Games, those dudes went on to form a new studio which made Showgunners and something called Sumerian Six.

Despite that Hard West 2 is good.

Oh ye, Sumerian Six is like a Commandos game, but with supernatural WW2 elements in it. Not half bad, if you're a fan of tactical squad games.

Speaking of supernatural/pulp fiction adventures. I can suggest Lamplight League, shame it was abandoned by Paradox.

Phantom Doctrin is another good tactical RPG that went under the radar when it came out.
You run your own spy agency in the middle of the cold war.
It is really fun and well worth your time.
Check it out.

It's a testament to just how good everything else in Phantom Doctrine is that I'm able to completely handwave the lousy combat and recommend it anyway. Usually in a turn-based tactics game, the quality of the game hinges on the quality of the combat.

Why would anyone buy this FFT has already been rereleased like 3 times already and the community has added more content with mods. I don't see a reason to buy something that might have a small amount of changes and maybe a little bit of extra content.

Finally I can mention my opinion

When I saw this annoucement, it made me really excited and overjoyed, since FFT is literally my favorite game of all time. But after the initial hype phase faded in, I remembered: "Oh yeah, this is just a remaster."

I was really expecting a sequel or a prequel (Fifty Year War)... or anything "new" for that matter. But instead, we're getting a remaster.... again.... :(

One cope I have for this is that since this game is gonna get released on Steam, there's probably gonna be an even bigger mod scene for it than just ffhacktics.com. I do love me a good rebalance mod, but being able to add in a different campaign and be able to create custom attack animations rather than using the same 3 visual effects would be pretty awesome. And who knows, maybe the people behind "Journey of the Five" or "Call of Power" will be able to finish their hacks already. (they won't, but MAYBE)

EDIT: On a little side tangent, I find it hilarious that they're releasing the game on the PS4 as well. Goes to show how impactful the PS5 truly was lol.

FFT isn't indie but the name is too important to not be mentioned here i guess.

For what is worth, if it's anything like the tactics ogre "remaster" that did massive changes to core gameplay (forced level caps, overpowered cards, etc) then this FFT rerelease is not going to be the same game at all, for better or worse.

The fact they let you choose between the original and enhanced version (why do that if it's the same gameplay?) reinforces that and should be a clear response to the backlash tactics ogre got.

Every version of Tactics Ogre has been ludicrously broken going all the way back to 1995, so I can't get too outraged over it. It's not like they ruined a masterpiece - it's just exchanging one broken system for a different broken system.

Oh my bad, I got too excited and forgot the "indie" part of this thread lol.

Not really core gameplay changes, but one thing that scares me is that I saw one post mentioning how the class tree (at 0:32) doesn't show any ressemblance of Onion Knight or Dark Knight, and they said that this probably means they're removing some of the WoTL inclusions for this game, which would make me sad since I like WoTL's extra content. The only real sin of that remaster is lagging and butchering some of the sound effects.

But who knows, maybe they're just hiding both classes until you unlock them, It would explain Dark Knight at least, because their requirements are a bit unusual to be unlocked.

I swear every time I dip into this thread now its because I remembered another game I played 20 years ago.

Many people might not know about this but Capcom actually made a tactical RPG for the GBA in the Onimusha franchise. Its very boiler plate and by the numbers and doesn't really try anything unique or different but is still a pretty fun game, if a bit basic. A solid 6 or 7 out of 10, worth checking out if you are a TRPG fan or a big fan of Onimusha.

Don't get too excited about a modern-day remaster of FFT:

Woke central.
Ehh, it comes off more like pandering to that crowd than actually making changes to the game or story for the "modern audience". Whatever, I can ignore the influx of trannies to the fandom. I can't be bothered to figure out mods or how to play the game on my computer. I think the last time I played Tactics was at least 12 years ago before I sold my ps2 and I've regretted it since every time I get the itch to play this game again when I can't find a good strategy rpg. If I can get a convenient way to play FFT on my ps4 then that's good enough. I'll still wait for a sale though.
