Retro games and emulation - Discuss retro shit in case you're stuck in the past or a hipster

I have an older Everdrive 64 v3, it's run everything I've thrown at it great, including running a modded GC Master Quest rom which was fun. Had to replace the battery at one point.

It's expensive though, I would say it's worth it but there's a newer SummerCart64 which has a similar feature set and lower price.

What can everdrive do that summercart can't?

The biggest difference is that the SummerCart64 is an open source design, so in theory even you could build one, making it cheaper than the Everdrives, which are closed source designs by Krikzz that the chinese made cheap copies of later on.

The SC64 can also emulate the 64DD and run it's games, meanwhile you need patched ROMs to do so on the Everdrive.

The fact that I can emulate the DD has me sold, I've been dying to try the f-zero X expansion kit for years now. Thanks!

What android emulators are best for each system? I'm trying to use dolphin but it is unavailable to use my gamepad despite seeing it and letting me set it as a controller

I completely dismissed those things for the longest time since I just figured I could use my phone with a controller. The handhelds tend to be a better option since they have their own battery and are a lot smaller than using a phone with a controller. They really have found a gap in the market.
I agree. I've also tried emulating on my phone a few times, a while back and more recently when emulators were whitelisted on iOS. It was OK. I saw someone point this out and I can relate: I like phone for phone things and a dedicated device for game things. It's hard for me to get out of the "I'm on my phone" mindset otherwise. I've also since gotten kind of autistic about screen ratios, etc. as I've learned more. It may be consoomer, but tinkering with electronics is my main hobby- I don't play games all that much- so whatever.

Ha! Just don't be one of those people that buys a half dozen devices that all have the Game Boy form factor. I have several devices, but they all have different shapes and screen aspect ratios.

I also tried to do this once, it just wasn't fun. It was much too fiddly and fucking around and overall not worth the effort, and I didn't want to buy those "attach your phone to a controller" peripherals, either.

I don't know where else to post this, but would any happen to know what game this screen grab is from?

First I'd recommend installing Obtainium - https://github.com/ImranR98/Obtainium
so it is easier to download and update the latest versions of emulators from GitHub rather than the Play Store where versions are much less frequently updated.

Once that is installed you can use https://apps.obtainium.imranr.dev/ for easily adding new programs to Obtainium, but they can also be manually added from GitHub, F-Droid, etc.

The best versions of emulators vary based on how powerful your device is, but if you have a powerful device, I would recommend :

RetroArch (aarch64) as a good catch-all, but as far as standalone emus, also -

3DS - Lime3DS (discontinued but I prefer it for simplicity, successor is Azahar emulator but it is harder to set up)
DOS - Magic DosBox (Play Store)
Dreamcast - Flycast
DS - DraStic (discontinued but I still prefer it)
GameCube - Dolphin Nightly
N64 - M64Plus FZ Pro (Play Store)
PS2 - AetherSX2 (discontinued but still the best option)
PS3 - RPCS3
PSP - PPSSPP (Play Store)
PSX - DuckStation
Saturn - Saturn.emu (Play Store)
Switch - I haven't kept up to know the best current one, I still use Yuzu even though it's discontinued
Vita - Vita3K
Wii - Dolphin Nightly
Wii U - Cemu
Windows - Winlator

Oh for sure, inshallah I'm not that far gone. I have the vertical 4:3 chonky Anbernic GameBoy now which is just fine by my standards for pretty much everything, tiny black bars be damned. Might get a 16:9 one day since the Vita upscales PSP kind of poorly, might not. Might fuck around and get a 3:2 for whatever the fuck GBA had going on. And if anyone ever makes a decent dual screen device I might get it, too, since the 3DS screen is harder to look at than when I was a kid, although for now it will be hard to beat original hardware on that front. Beyond that, though, once everything is covered in native, I don't see much use in expanding.

Totally agree with you guys. I bought a GameSir X2s, and it's actually really nice, but I ran into two problems.

1) I have to take off my phone case for the usb-c plugin to make contact, and so it just become too cumbersome of a process when I want to sit down and play an old game for 20 minutes.

2) I don't want to deal with texts and emails coming in when I'm trying to play Super Mario Bros. 3, so I like to keep games separate from my day to day phone.

Oh yeah I have a GameSir also theyre ok but mine had a unconventional design choice that caused it to not work properly on one of my emulators so I had to go back and forth with the devs to get them to support it as it wasn't a completely rare issue.

My biggest concern with gaming on my phone is that it eats through battery life rather quickly. With a dedicated device I have no issues with the battery dying as I can put it away, but if my phone dies I can't make calls or use the transit app or anything.

Not sure where else to post this but Slope is mostly a retro Vidya YouTuber anyway. A happening regarding Slope’s Game Room. His Google account is getting fucked over because he never left the group chat with the SuperSega scam team. They posted something too spicy that made Google mark him for deletion. He’s in panic mode right now. Someone archive the video as I can’t right now.

Slope is a fucking idiot, as his shilling for the Intellivision Amico proved.

If I want a handheld with full blown Android, but also the ability to boot into Linux, are my only options the Retroid 5 or mini? I know some Anbernic devices come with a gimped version of Android, but I'm looking for something with access to the Play Store that I can also run Postmaster on.

The AYN Odin 2 can do both, I believe. Or maybe it’s the Loki. One of them does it.

Ars Technica: Engineer creates first custom motherboard for 1990s PlayStation console (archive)
Last week, electronics engineer Lorentio Brodesco announced the completion of a mock-up for nsOne, reportedly the first custom PlayStation 1 motherboard created outside of Sony in the console's 30-year history. The fully functional board accepts original PlayStation 1 chips and fits directly into the original console case, marking a milestone in reverse-engineering for the classic console released in 1994.
