Retro games and emulation - Discuss retro shit in case you're stuck in the past or a hipster

Not sure where else to post this but Slope is mostly a retro Vidya YouTuber anyway. A happening regarding Slope’s Game Room. His Google account is getting fucked over because he never left the group chat with the SuperSega scam team. They posted something too spicy that made Google mark him for deletion. He’s in panic mode right now. Someone archive the video as I can’t right now.

Slopes is now in a better spot but things are still murky. The Supersega/Superspga still seems to be an issue.
Someone in his comment section told him to back his stuff up to an local NAS next time.

Official trophies are one thing, but unofficial is just some dude telling you to beat Sonic without losing a life or something. It's not really any different than if I told you to beat my score in the first level of Donkey Kong '94 (12600).

Reactions: Gamer (not racist)
Achievements are often a good way to end up hating the game because it weaponizes your OCD against your enjoyment of the game, often compelling people to beat games in a way they dislike just to please their imaginary friends in their heads. Break free.
That, and some of the achievements are just completely retarded.

"Hey, do this one impossible task that requires pixel-perfect timing as if you were playing a Kaizo mario hack!"

I tried to like Retroachievements. But it puts the chore of modern gaming into old games that never had a chore system like modern Achievements.

If it’s to track your progress in a game, by completing chapters, i’m fine with an achievement system. But yeah, count me out for the most part.

I installed a softmod PSX Backup Loader / Region Unlocker that boots from the memory card.
FreePSXBoot - Play PSX/PS1 Backups Without A Modchip!

I don't even have any PSX backup disks, I just think hacking is cool. 8)
Installation is easy if you have homebrew on any Playstation console with a Memory Card port and a spare PSX MC.

I used to like mods like this but having to stop and faff with a mod launch every time you start a console is annoying.

A PSNee is 6 wires and pretty easy to install, once it's in you can just press power and boot right into a burned game.

Yeah, unfortunately RA is plagued by retarded lists made by nolifers for nolifers.

I was in a Parasite Eve 2 thread about reworking the list pushing back against the brilliant idea of adding achievements for each endgame rank. There are 13 ranks, of which only 3 give you something worth getting, the others only net you some common consumables that you find in normal play that are supposed to be a small boost for your next playthrough since you did poorly (except for B rank, which is the highest you can get on a New Game).

Retarded argument in favor of adding those achievements: "if the devs didn't want you to get all 13 ranks, they wouldn't have coded 13 ranks". what?

the funniest thing was that all the "hardcore" gamers voting FOR those achievents, where also voting for locking L rank achievement (the lowest rank, but very difficult to achieve normally because you have to skip ALL encounters, except for forced ones, which means no points to buy equip, heals etc.) behind a fresh new game, to avoid people getting it by rank rollover (if you beat the game twice and get the same rank twice, it rolls you over to the next lowest not-earned-yet rank; in this case you get S rank twice, the highest possible, and it rolls over to the lowest, L rank), which is much, much easier since the game is short and NG+ takes even shorter.

fortunately we pushed back strongly enough and it seems like they won't be adding the idiotic achievements to the main set, but this (and looking up the lists for other games I want to play) made me riconsider RA as a whole, since there are almost no normal and achievable lists for people who can't or don't want to spend hundreds of hours on a single game (some lists have 200+ achievements), so I did what you used to do for 100% completion before the internet was as widespread: I got official guides for my games.

forgot the point of the rant: the people voting FOR the L rank on new game actually achieved it by rank rollover (easy to spot by looking at achievements timestamps), which was very funny to me

I have a RA account and have it linked to all the emulators that will use it (I fucking despise ReroArch so I use standalone emulators and launch games thru EmulationStation), but I don't find it intrusive or a hindrance to enjoying old games, just a fun visual way of seeing "Oh I just got a massive combo in DMC1, cool". And not much more than that.

“I hate retroarch btw” really is the emulation equivalent of “I use arch btw”.
If people like RetroArch that’s great. I’m not stopping you from using it or telling you that you shouldn't use it. But my experience with RA was that it’s clunky PS3 UI and dropdown menus within dropdown menus to get to the PS1 core and load up a game is more of a hassle than booting up Duckstation. Maybe it’s less of a pain in the ass now, but using standalone emulators is what works for me.

The only good retroarch equivalent of any emulator is Sega Saturn and that's just because Mednafen is even more of a pain in the ass to use and all of the other Sega Saturn emulators have crippling issues that make some games nigh on unplayable. For most major emulators you're better off just using a standalone version.
