Retro games and emulation - Discuss retro shit in case you're stuck in the past or a hipster

  • 🔧 At about Midnight EST I am going to completely fuck up the site trying to fix something.
Is there a way to make Retroarch's save state commands not awful? I use MAME for Genesis emulation just for that.
Isn’t it the exact same as other emulators? Press a hotkey to save state, press another hotkey to load state.
To be fair, for an interface that shoves messages out as liberally as RetroArch does, they really should make this more easily discoverable within the application.
I would think “User Interface Settings” is self-explanatory.
You don't actually have to load up the core first, if you set the PS3 UI to just read your rom folders and click the game files from there it'll give a list of compatible cores to boot (or load a selected default per-filetype iirc, depending on settings)
Other emulators:
>”Load ROM”
>Select rom
>Play game

RetroArch:
>”Load Content”
>Select rom
>Select core if you have a preference, or just press Enter
>Play game

I don’t get what’s so complicated about this.

It is even simpler if you scan your ROM folders.

Go down list to find game
Start game

Retroarch being RetroAchievements? Do I have to install something from the website for it to work on Dolphin? Would achievement requirements be retroactive or would I need to do a new save?

(I’ll assume you meant to quote me)
The functionality is built into Dolphin, you just have to sign into your account in one of the settings. Achievements are probably retroactive but depend on the game? No idea for that.

I am so sick of the macOS build of Dolphin constantly corrupting itself. Seems like every time I use it, it breaks and won't even launch until I re-download it.

Are there any 3rd party N64 ram expansion paks that are vetted as safe and functional? Or should I get an original? I'm looking to get one, and worried about getting an "original" that is actually a functionless plastic copy.

They're not region locked, if you want a cheap one, purchase from japan. "メモリー拡張パック" on yahoo auctions should get you what you're looking for. Prices are usually around half? What they are for western. In fact, all N64 utilities are region free, even the VRU (the mic), it just only has voicebanks for the selling region in it, funnily enough, so you can scream japanese at your english pikachu and it'll work.
As for third party, no, there are no verifiably worthwhile ones. If you look around you'll notice there aren't a lot even around, honestly. A lot of them that started popping up about 10~ years ago when the n64 was experiencing a big nostalgia wave would cause problems like random resets or crashes and so people stopped recommending them/started calling them out. I've literally never heard of an oem expansion pak failing, so it's worth just splurging on the official cause it'll last forever, and you can resell it when you're off your kick.
I've also not really heard of real ones being stripped out, because the n64 actually requires some hardware to even boot, which is why the original "Jumper Pak" exists. Try launching without it, no picture. Just use your best judgement when buying online for that, check reviews, etc.

The vintage one by InterAct is literally the same as the official one, but nothing made after the discontinuation of the N64 by "Retro" companies is.

Considering how little the RAM Pak actually does in most games that supposedly support it, it isn't worth putting a great deal of effort into finding one.

What's the situation with Switch emulation now? Is it Sudachi that you're supposed to use?

Also, what's the best way to get PS3 games? I'm trying to get Killzone 2 but not finding it..

Not sure if this is the place to discuss miscellaneous official remasters, but until I hear otherwise...

Alien Hominid HD is now out.
I tried pirating it but the copy I found just would not work. I like the game but I always found it to be a sort of lackluster Metal Slug clone. Yes, I know it's a Metal Slug homage, no need to explain that. But I feel like when you copy a great game very closely you have big shoes to fill and Alien Hominid fell a little short for me.

I keep meaning to buy it when if it's on sale for a dollar or two. There should be a sequel and not some rogue-lite looter shooter garbage.

This is beyond fascinating, although it's not something I'd find enjoyable to play. I'd be interested in seeing this experiment improved further with the addition of Famicom Disk System hardware, or even the bottom expansion slot that went unused for the NES.

In addition to that Star Fox 64 port getting a version 2.0 version (I had held off on version 1.0), HarbourMasters came out with a Mario Kart 64 port, which I instantly installed and ran through the first circuit. (Though I miss my cousins/siblings I used to play with, and would love to see the multiplayer mode with music and all). (:_(

It does a feel bit "off" as 50cc was identical to what one anon on /v/ reported--"playing 50cc and 2 ai were constantly on my ass". Hopefully that gets fixed in future updates.

Debunked:
Xenia Canary Development Team Is Not Working With Microsoft on the Xbox Classics Program (archive)
Hey everyone, I just wanted to clear some confusion regarding a rumor that has recently surfaced online.

The Xenia (and Xenia Canary, by extension) team is by no means associated with, nor working alongside Microsoft in any capacity. Microsoft uses their own emulation to provide backwards compatibility on Xbox One/Series consoles and as such has no reason to collaborate with Xenia, even if they decided to bring these titles to PC.

Xenia continues to be a community-run effort that encourages and enforces legal emulation practices both in development and within this server.

Because it will often not play the game.
