Tech you miss/ new tech trends you hate - ok boomers

Fuck, I got a semi-corpo job recently and they run everything on microsoft - so I got the "pleasure" of using outlook for the first time in my life. They really try to force the newest fad (AI) on you full force. I was typing an e-mail and the god-damned client kept trying to suggest to me what word I want to say next, SHUT UP! I am a human and my language is sacred and no machine shall try to imitate it. Bill gates needs to be nuked ASAP. (To be fair I have to say I do enjoy C# and the way that .NET has evolved over the past two decades, some of it is pretty clever)

My company also uses Microsoft, and their AI has never once suggested anything remotely helpful, kind of like Microsoft's tech support, interesting how that works. Wonder who programs it.

On the topic of Microsoft again, I've been trying to find some more YouTube stuff to listen to, and I've been looking for IT/computer folk who don't fall into the typical clickbait/annoying/consoomer categories, and while I stand by the local account workaround for Windows 11 not being a practical long-term solution, it annoys me when these YouTubers assume the best intentions from Microsoft despite knowing everything we know about them, such as telling large audiences it's a nothing-burger that W11 is actively getting rid of local accounts, or how the AI screenshotting all your stuff and saving it in plain unencrypted view in the preview builds wasn't a big deal at all. Once they start saying that, I cannot take anything they say seriously.

I really don't care whether people want to use Windows or not, but they should at least make informed decisions.

I know people here are big on defending ai (or at least making fun of "artists" who can't make something better than ai slop) I kind of hate ai. I didn't used to, but the more I've used it to try and help me write, the more useless I've noticed it is, at least in this area. There are some things it can do well; I've found it's very helpful as a thesaurus. But youtube and every other corner of the Internet is so filled with Indian AI slop that I really just wish it was never invented. On the bright side, I'm somewhat convinced the Internet will cease to exist in a few decades because of AI. Maybe Jersh is right and everything will become fractured and there will be a bunch of China-tier internets

but the more I've used it to try and help me write
Whatever imperfections are present in your writing, people are going to appreciate that it's real the longer that AI stays around. Honestly the main thing I find chat bots useful for is getting a quick answer for something that I would have gotten from skimming Google's search results without actually clicking the links. Still terrible for specifics.

Seeing as how my McDonald's is a new build that doesn't even have a full counter space (it's all oriented for drive-through) and how McDonald's is one of the worst offenders--I hate digital menus so much. They keep flashing in and out of what you can actually order, they'll often fuck up (flickering, off color, off), they hurt my eyes, and they're just not fun to look at.

People who insist that AI is the future. When AI is used as a tool, it can be helpful. When it's used as a solution with little to no human oversight, it's laziness. I hear of students writing papers solely on AI, they're not learning how to be literate or think critically. Just tell a machine to do it. Bonus points of when you ask AI a controversial question, only for it to be programmed to NOT answer what the algorithm would find.

McDonald's is a new build
Subway now has this hipster-soy-corporate look, and prices are much higher. Haven't been to a fast food burger place since 2010s so I haven't used a newfangled digital menu.

People who insist that AI is the future.
There's even a number of people who think that AI will even cause human extinction one way or another... or that people will "merge with AI" and become machine life somehow.

AI AI AI AI AI AI AI
With the Current Year trend, so-called artificial intelligence can be good for making instant art -- when it doesn't really screw up and/or make eldritch horrors -- but such seems always annoying and/or incompetent with all else. Especially "answers" on search engines, which sound like a "phone voice" one hears on "customer service" in the mind.

I said "with the Current Year trend" because that development of "artificial intelligence" research has been a thing almost as long as electronic computers have been around.

Speaking of cars. I’m absolutely fed up with these big ass trucks and how bright their lights are. I’ve seen some of these assholes will have a strip of bright ass LED lights. Sick and tired of these redneck fuckers and John Dutton wannabes with their big trucks.

So i have an idea. I’m looking to get the brightest high beams for my car. I want them so bright that these fuckers are like looking into the sun.

In addition, i’m looking to add running lights with the same bright ass LEDs. If our dipshit lawmakers won’t pass a bill limiting the brightness of headlights.

My car is a 2008 Toyota Corolla. I know, old car but it’s literally the toughbook of cars. And new cars suck absolute shit. Give me some links to the brightest bulbs you can find. I want to burn these asshole’s retinas for a few hours including with a toyota logo.

Similarly is making user accounts on your own pc. I despise that you have to connect it to a microsoft account now. I remember growing up (not sure which OS, probably windows 98 or XP) and everyone in my family had their own account on the family pc. No internet connection or microsoft account needed. Windows 10 is probably one of the worst things Ive ever had to deal with. Im in awe microsoft even functions anymore, I refuse to believe anyone with any semblance of technical knowledge still works there. I'm just praying they get busted up for being a monopoly some day or just utterly collapse under the weight of their own bloated incompetence, with no federal aid to bail them out

I hate that shit more than anything. When M$ made it pain in the ass with a local account, that’s when i swore off using Windows on any of my machines. Just use a well established Linux distro and tell M$ to pound sand.

Linus ranted on this earlier this week. But even M$ accounts are a pain in the ass. Even if you get a password wrong, it will require you to jump through hoops.

Like i had a pajeet get into my Hotmail account. First time something like this happened in 15 years. This dude setup a facebook account under my email. Found all the facebook accounts. Decided to post something super racist on his facebook account and got it super locked out. And my hotmail account associated with my Xbox account keeps getting locked because i have two factor enabled. I need to get my account off that email but i’m too damn lazy and will do it if i want to play Halo in the future.

i miss rotary phones and the way telephones used to be in general. i also cant stand current year cars and trucks. the fact that its getting to the point that you cannot even repair your own car anymore because you need to own some computer that lets you talk to the computer inside the car just so it will let you change the brakes or whatever is insane. i also have mixed feelings about the state of what cars are being made of now.

maybe its because i like to go to very empty places where cars rarely go but the idea of a motor that is more plastic than metal and a car frame that can just shatter if you even jack it up to change the tire in the wrong place bothers me. that being said i do like back up cameras and things like trucks that have outlets in their beds. that stuff is fine.

also i miss the zune. it was such a nice way to carry music and podcasts around and i do not understand how something similar does not exist now that is just better and also not a phone.

I never had a zune. But i miss the cheap chinese crap my dad use to buy for MP3 players circa 2006. But he did have a creative mp3/wma player from back then i loved. Could just drag and drop all my music files. Now if i have a track or album not on Apple Music, I can’t just drag and drop, i have to use itunes to sync. And if it’s a album rare album that has a re-released album on apple music and i do itunes match, i can get the wrong album cover or no album cover at all. And this is on the same album.

I still use a touchtone phone. The most advanced feature on it is "speed dial", which I never used (lol). Like I said, by default and to me, the word "phone" conjures up the mental image of the rotary or touchtone landline phone, and not "smartphone" like such usually does with "Zoomers" and "Generation Alpha" kids (and maybe "Millennials" too).

Normie meme but it works, and gets the point across.

I miss when game developers were able to legitimately brag about how impressive their game optimization is. One example that comes to mind is the Nintendo 64 port of Resident Evil 2 fitting onto a cartridge. Also on the flip side, while the original Crysis was super unoptimized (relying on single core lol), it was so graphically impressive at the time, and it took a really long time for other games to catch up in terms of graphics.

Now you need ridiculous amounts of VRAM and even system RAM just to play basic-ass current day games that do not look impressive enough to warrant such requirements, and these devs will not stop complaining about they simply cannot make an optimized game, when it has been done so much more impressively before. Whether it's because these developers are incompetent, lazy, or just flat out outsourced (which likely means both), these games require so much when you get a result that leaves much to be desired in terms of being impressed.

And if you're going to make a super unoptimized piece of shit, make it so groundbreaking that other games will be fighting to try and catch up to your product, but that's never what happens.

Media players that aren't either total chinkshit garbage or $900 audiophile hardware.
I like my Retekess V115, thing has a monochrome LCD, Nokia-style swappable battery, SD slot, and (this was a hidden feature to me) FLAC support.

The problem is that shit like this is relatively obscure and it's not the best hardware. For example, the speaker sounds fine but through headphones the quality is dogshit. And it's made by a no-name Chinese company.
I wish companies like Sony or Panasonic were making this stuff, I shouldn't have to resort to the depths of eBay for a media player that isn't total garbage.

You know what I miss eldritch horrors AI art. There was something interestingly unnerving about them, like a fun uncanny valley thing. You could still feel the machine behind if it make sense.
Today's AI still do weird shit but not as alien as it was and the gap is closing fast, I find it a little sad.
(I'm not talking about arstists using ai for help or the fun of it)
