So the CIA?
The CIA at least occasionally pretends it is an honorable and decent organization. They also have an excellent World Fact Book which is absolutely not a way for them to demonstrate their ability to obtain, analyze, and collate information, especially the kind people would rather keep hidden.

"he should know something about the country" doesn't mean "he should know every single detail"
Yes but he should bloody well know how many people live there, what the ethnicity, religion, tribal grievances of the people who live there are, etc. I mean, for fuck's sake, this is how we got Israel in the first fucking place. We the British drew the borders around the region without any regard to what people actually lived there and what their ethnic grievances were with people in the surrounding areas
that shit in my eyes is for the generals to put together and present to congress when seeking their approval as to whether or not it would ever be feasable.
Generals almost always want to go to war (in the sense that most people who get promoted to General are neocon war whores who will feed the war machine) and will use or omit any information necessary to arguing their case. See: muh WMDs in Iraq

A Senator, whose vote could be crucial in whether or not these warmongering pieces of shit actually get their wish, should fucking know better

It's really not that relevant, i doubt anybody here could name the population of israel off the top of their head, but they've given plenty of opinions on it. I think Cruz is a fuckhead but he will have to know all sorts of shit to be a politician and not knowing how many brownoids live in some shithole isn't a deal breaker for me nor do i think it's a prerequisite to having an opinion on whether or not it should be glassed.
Ted Cruz isn't a random senator. He sits on the Committee on Foreign Relations and on the Subcommittee on Near East, South Asia, Central Asia, and Counterterrorism. He should know basic facts about the countries he frequently receives briefs on and determines policy around.

the "what's the population" gotcha question just hits me like a "oh so you're a fan of X band name every song" type question.
if you're going to advocate getting in a war with someone it behooves you to at least know basic things about them like roughly how many sand niggers they have, both to throw at you militarily and to flood your allies with in the way of rapeugees.

I am torn on Iran. Sand niggers of any stripe cannot be trusted with nuclear weapons (Israel, India and Pakistan are enough all ready). Iran is not Iraq. They've made documented and extensive efforts towards building nuclear weapons through their own facilities and technology exchange with North Korea. so the threat is real. they've likely had the ability to build a weapon for some years now (Stuxnet wrecked their enrichment facilities in 2010 but that was 15 years ago). But likely have not been able to produce a designed small enough to be deliverable via Ballistic missile, which is the only way they could feasible use it against any of their neighbors. but miniaturization would only be a matter of time.

Iran has also demonstrably been instrumental in the proliferation of EFP IEDs in the Iraq war that killed thousands of US troops in that war, and funding insurgents.

But I am 100% against a ground Invasion and occupation, I do not believe there is the political will to do it correctly (Total war). it would be another forever war. Thankfully I do not think an invasion is particularly likely.

What i could support is a Air campaign from the USAF and USN to eradicate Iran's nuclear production facilities, and i think, based on the movements of USAF tankers and fighters (the largest surge of aircraft to the middle east since 2003) that this is the course the president is likely to take.

The Israelis, whatever your opinion on them, have proven that the Iranian military's Air defense network is non-existent and through target assassinations of military leadership have locked the Iranians into a decision making paralysis. quite simply the Iranians are not as scary as everyone thought. But the Israeli air force cannot finish the job without heavy bombers carrying the largest bunker busting bombs.

So i think the US will likely strike Iran's underground enrichment facilities with GBU-57 MOP delivered by the B-2 stealth bomber along with a SEAD campaign to further soften the Iranian skies. possible other goals could be sinking the entire Iranian navy (again) and further destruction of defense industry.

I can live with that. I might even agree with that. anything more I cannot endorse, and would be a huge boondoggle like Iraq and Afghanistan were.

last bit is surprising but who gives a shit about population and demographics of a country we're bombing? id say the economics is more important so they can rebuild and not be rapefugees
IIRC Iran was near its own color revolution before 2020. Sanctions were doing their job and crippling Iran’s economy. When Biden’s handlers got in, they didn’t enforce any of them. Anyone concerned about Iran’s nuclear research or terror group funding should ask why those sanctions weren’t enforced. There wouldn’t need to be any regime change if the Iranians would do it themselves.

If at current, as all signs seem to be, the "getting into a war with someone" is some airstrikes and not a ground war.

Who cares how many people live there, they aren't going to be throwing shit at us as we fly by and blow up their reactor. And unless we're leveling the country (which again I don't think anyone is talking about or assuming will be done) why are their going to be refugee floods?
I'm all for regime change in Iran, but people shouldn't kid themselves thinking that Israel (and maybe the US) should be the one doing it. We all know how that turned out in Iraq and Libya.

It needs to come from the Iranians themselves.
Which there seems to be interest in from Iran's former prince urging the people to rise up and replace the current structure with a new democratic one. We'll see how that ever pans out but that would be the angle I'd probably support personally.

Saying that isn't a gotcha because your implying there is a reason he should know these things about the country vs say the Bahamas or Peru.

What exactly is that reason for which he should know things about this country?

If ONLY there were some way for nuclear capable countries to destroy non-nuclear countries from afar without spending trillions of dollars and thousands of lives. Imagine how simple this issue would become if we had a magic button that we could press that just fucking obliterated countries with no nuclear response option.
In such a scenario, our leadership would have to be jam-packed with only the most mentally deficient retards imaginable to allow other countries to develop nuclear strike capabilities at all!

And unless we're leveling the country (which again I don't think anyone is talking about or assuming will be done) why are their going to be refugee floods?
Because you've destabilised their regime. When you destabilise a nation, all these different factions, they go to war with each other. When the country is a war zone, guess what happens? People tend to flee.

New Yorkers love illegals
Ayy bada bing. Deh walkin’ heah.

If only Albany would cut away from NYC and let upstate be its own state. It’s too beautiful of a place to stay stuck those assholes.
In a way that'll never work because NYS needs NYC. NYS will be West Virginia levels of poverty if the city and Long Island leave

British Palestine was doing ok before the jews invaded with their mass aliyahs.
