In fact, some people even get off on specifically looking each other in the eyes while having sex. One can assume that if Khayyam were to have sex (doubtful) he'd probably be seeing his partner's face and she (or he) would be seeing his.

Indonesian moids have and are replacing this with Islam because Islam is patrilineal, daughters only receive half of what sons do, and widows receive either 1/4 of the estate (if they had kids or 1/8th (if they didn't). I'll admit, I've thought about reading The Color Purple, but the graphic depiction of abuse has made me hesitant. Like you said, it's trauma porn: excessively gratuitous.

I think those realities can be discussed without lingering on the traumatizing details. Plus, there is more to the African American experience than slavery.
