The purpose of the campaign isn't to "hurt" AAA companies, it's to prevent games from disappearing that are dependent on online services; it's about the right to own what we buy without fear of it being taken. While I agree that copyright is a huge problem, his points does nothing to address the problem of games being affected by server shutdowns.

Their only claim is that "if we got rid of copyright then they wouldn't have to pressure people into buying sequels by closing their old games". Cool, but that still doesn't change the fact that they could still pull the plug on the servers or if the company goes bankrupt and has to close everything.

By that same token, think about all the f2p people on those same gacha games, who saved their currency, did the grind, and because the company decides it’s not profitable enough anymore and pulls the plug on the game, now their long-term efforts are for naught. That preserves the benefit of being able to quickly edit text, but prevents you from going insane having to remember which array index you store that particular string at, if you use descriptive identifiers.

Natural sound simply doesn't work like this. He can't really claim this is some noise filtering setup, since you can see he lets the high-end hiss from his S and H sounds bleed through, leaving this big notch filter-like hole. If anything, his audio has the most high frequency (noise range) content out of anyone on the panel.

The hard cutoff around 15k you see is from lossy compression and isn't anything he did himself.

Well, from what I've seen, they both have some similar philosophies - I haven't looked too deeply at TempleOS's code, but I remember hearing Terry say some concerning things in his interviews about scope and encapsulation, etc. Terry largely has a philosophy of not wanting to be saved from himself, which I can respect, but it came off to me like he's the kind of guy who'd make everything globally accessible, which would make it a nightmare to work with. That's something he and Thor have in common, actually.

I'm not bashing Terry as a person, necessarily, but I've always gotten the sense that Terry is sort of an outsider artist as far as code goes, and I feel the need to assert that volume of effort and quality of effort are not inextricable. There can be a lot of something, but that doesn't imply that any of it is good, necessarily. The sheer amount of what he accomplished is impressive, sure, but that doesn't necessarily imply he did it in an especially-skillful way, and I see a bunch of people saying that because he built TOS on his own, that he must necessarily write good-quality code in doing it, when that's not necessarily true.

That said, that's also not me saying he's definitely a bad coder, just that I can't guarantee he's a particularly good one. If any of you guys have actually done a dive on Terry's code and I'm way off-base, though, by all means, put me in my place.

Fair question and worth establishing.

Generally the compression is done using AAC for mp4 files and Opus for webm files. I believe twitch mostly (if not entirely) uses mp4. Regardless of the codec, none of them tear out this much frequency information from a range associated with human speech.

To take it a step further: If we suppose his line got compressed when they did their live hangout thing, any modern voice client would use a codec optimized for speech. I know Discord, for example, uses Opus (and Opus sounds good with everything). Even early telecommunications codecs based on interpolation don't do this much damage. If it were hypothetically some in-house thing, whoever paid for its development got fucked hard—since it strips away a lot of important speech-related data while including literally all noise.

It kinda pains me to think he has some pricey mic setup and makes it sound worse than tin cans on a string, all in an effort to try to make the retarded shit he says sound wise and insightful.
